Got the latest Musician's Friend in the mail and on p. 95 (for
those keeping score at home) I saw four Cordoba's for sale.

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to classical guitar, though
I do own and play a Strat-knock off at home. My question is
this: the Cordoba 40R, at $549 in the catalog, is in my price
range...is it recommended? I'm asking this group for your
experiences, tips, suggestions or anything else that may be of
help to me in determining if this is a quality guitar, or if
Cordoba is is general a quality brand, keeping in mind that's
about all I want to pay, maybe a bit more.

Long-winded, but thanks in advance for your replies.

In article <27041b75...@usw-ex0104-026.remarq.com>,
There can be such a difference between the guitars in the price range
you are looking at that I would not even consider buying one sight
unseen. There are a number of fine student guitars under $1,000 but
you should play they before you ever consider buying one of them.

I've not been impressed with the Cordoba guitars. Pretty, but not too
much sound. A bit muddy, at least the 4 I played. Some of the Esteve
guitars really play nicely, but they vary from guitar to guitar, so it
takes picking.

I have a 70 series that sounds great... I had the opportunity to play
all models to the top of the line, as did several others, and found the
70 series to not conform to the other post about muddiness. However,
those below it in price were terrible in my opinion. When I got mine
there were several Esteveé models and Ramirez R1-3 series there, it
passed them all IMNSHO.

P.S. My opinion was seconded by five professional players as well.

When I bought, I was in a similar situation as you are. I played two 40R's
along with other guitars in the same price range - the Esteve that I
eventually bought had a much clearer more vibrant sound. I also brought a
friend with me to listen to them with eyes closed for a blind test - it was
never even close. Like someone else said, the Cordobas sounded reasonable
by themselves, but muddy in comparison with some of the others.

Go and test some for yourself.

If you live near a city where there is a "Guitar Center" store, you
might be able to try out several of the Cordoba guitars. Most Guitar
Centers stock the Cordobas and occasionally sell them at prices more
aggressive than Musician's Friend.

I bought a Cordoba 50R at Guitar Center about a year and a half ago. I
thought it compared favorably to the Ramirez R1 (student) model. If
you decide to go for a Cordoba, I'd be glad to sell mine (excellent
condition) for less than the new price of a 40R. (I bought a new,
hand-made instrument and the Cordoba is redundant ...)

That's good to know. Maybe from a different line. The ones I played
included one that was over $1000, but I can't recall the number.
