George Sakellariou is my favorite classical guitarist, yet I have
never seen a recording or a transcription by him. Years ago he
sat in front of a camera and played some pieces for PBS. I couldn't
find any recordings by him, so when they rebroadcast the show I put
a tape recorder in front of the TV and made a crummy tape. He has
the most interesting repertoire of any guitarist I've seen or heard.
He arranged some pieces by Greek and South American composers. I
also like his interpretation of some of the "standards" better than
versions by more famous guitarists. I saw him in concert once, but
there were very few people there because no one knows who he is.

All I know of him is that he is Segovia-trained, and that he works
(or worked) in San Francisco.

Does anyone know if he has any recordings or transcriptions that
are available? And does anyone know why he is so anonymous?
Is anyone out there a student (or former student) of his?

DAVE-- I have an old copy of a record of his,"Music of South America",
1981, AMAT Records, P.O.Box 2471, San Rafael, CA.94912 Note that this
was 1981!!! This address is probably worthless now!!! Try Guitar Solo in
San Francisco and see if they know anything re: recordings &
transcriptions. Good Luck, Brian

He did a recording of South American music that was available in SF at
Guitar Solo. Last I saw him was a very fine Master Class and recital in
La Mesa in 1984? And I heard he was making ends meet playing concerts on
cruise ships, otherwise resides north of SF.

The last that I heard, George was indeed working on cruise ships. I did a
master class with him in 1981 or 82 at the University of South Dakota
where I did my undergrad degree in guitar. He also gave a recital (which I
have on tape); much of the repertoire was drawn from the Music of South
America disk.

A fine player, and a very nice guy.

A week or so ago, while in Guiar Solo, I noticed a new CD by Sakellariou. It
was produced privately (or so it seemed) in 1994.

I believe I've seen his performance on PBS around 1981 or 1982
and, at that time, he was teaching guitar at the Conservatory of
Music in San Francisco. I think he was born in Greece.

I had George's "Music of South America" a couple of decades ago. It was some of my favorite music. I lost it at some point.

I just went to Guitar Solo's web site and it's not listed. AMAT Records does not list it on their web site. Ebay has nothing on CD -- two sellers have it on vinyl, which I'm unfortunately no longer able to play.

Does anyone have it on CD? Would you like to sell it? I don't know if it's a legal alternative to ask about purchase of an electronic copy, given that it's pretty clearly out of print.

Thank you,
John

Yes. Two sellers have it on vinyl, which I can't use. Web search turned up no CDs.

There are a number of nice videos of him on the Guitar Salon International website and also on their youtube channel.

Right you are; thanks for pointing that out. Unfortunately I couldn't find any tracks from his Music of South America album. I don't know if it was ever released on CD.

My theory is that you have to be South American to play S.A. music right. Here's my favorite S.A. player playing S.A. right.

Roland Dyens could play samba like a Brazilian. One night at a festival he played "A Felicidade" up tempo and Baden Powell's "Berimbau." The next night we happened to be walking out of a concert at the same time. I said to him,"While you played "Berimbau" I thought Baden was going to come out of the guitar. I didn't know anyone but a Brazilian could play samba like you played "A Felicidade".

Dyens smiled and said, "Maybe I was Brazilian in a former life."

I thought he was referring to the last scene in the movie "Orfeu Negro" where the little boy runs to find Orfeu's guitar to play the sun up out of the ocean, after the death of Orfeu.
