I was at a music store in Madrid asking for a Ramirez R1
which I knew to be a good starting guitar some 10 yeras ago,
when I tried a number of guitars.
I was told "we do not carry it because it si no longer popular,
we carry Alhambras instead" I was very surprised to say the least!

Any truth to that comment?

What guitars are in the same $$ range as the Ramirez R-1
that people like? (to get a short list to do my own exploring)

I knew the R-1 to have substantial bass and quite a bit of volume for
an entry level guitar.
Which current ("popular"??!) models are found to have a strong bass
and a significant volume?

Thanks!
Reinaldo

You can buy a great instrument right here in the UAS. Not a student guitar, but
a concert qualityone, starting at $2500. http://www.schrammguitars.com His
"Heritage Model" Indian Rosewood, cedar/spruce, gold or silver Schaller
machines, French polish, case and shipping.

Paul,

Thanks a lot from your response.
However, the R-1 costs less than $250 in Madrid...
I guess is about U$1000 in USA.

Any suggestion around the $200-300 range?
Much appreciated!

They are a little over-priced in the States. And, the ones I have played are
not worth the price. They don't have a very good bass in my opinion either.
They are a steal for $100 though. The action is really nice.

Ramirez sells direct in Madrid at their store at Calle De La Paz #8.
Perhaps this was just a classic case of a music store belittling a
product they don't carry. In any case, if you want to by a Ramirez in
Madrid, you should check out their shop.

Both the R and E series guitars are built to Ramirez' specs by other
builders. They may come from the same factory as the Alhambras.

I personally prefer the tone of even laminated rosewood sides/back
over mahogany for a classical guitar, so the R1 would not be my first
choice.

Thanks for your replay,
Which brands do you find to have entry student level (say less than $500)
models with strong bass and the old fashion Spanish warm
tone? (I have no guitar store within a 2 hour drive so I can not do
a lot of live comparison :-(

Thanks again!

Reinaldo,
Since you live away from a store, you are going to have a tough time
playing something before you buy it. You might consider watching EBAY.
Second hand Yairi classicals are usually good buys in that price
range. Models to consider are the cy117, cy118, cy140, cy130, cy135,
cy125. I would avoid mahagony back and sides and go for rosewood
laminate instruments. Only the cy117 is mahogony in that group. The
Takamini's mentioned in the answers above are also good in that price
range. Yamaha's are also good. You can find R1's on EBAY for that
price sometimes, but they usually want between 500-750 depending on
condition.

There are a lot of Mexican guitars in that price range or lower on
EBAY. If you are willing to take a risk, you can get a good deal that
sounds Spanish. If you see a Benjamin Garcia, buy it. You will
probably have to put new tuners on it, but they have a wonderful
sound. Also, a lot of Spanish guitars are sold in that price range.

The real values though are in the range from $500 to $1000 in the new
guitar range. La Patrie has a solid rosewood guitar in that price
range that is really nice to play and sound good. It is hard to find
an instrument that plays easily in this price range. The action is
usually too high or the neck is too thick.

addiional $500, and the "Spanish Heritage" model starts at "$2500+". CG's
start at $3200. Other then this your info is dead on correct.
