I just read today that the composer/performer Joe Maneri passed away
about a month ago.

Although he was probably better known in the free jazz field, he was
an exceptional musician who composed/improvised microtonal music, and
played the saxophone and the clarinet. He used 72 equal divisions of
the octave. He studied with Josef Schmid (who was a student of Alban
Berg).
I invite those who never heard about Joe Maneri to visit his website
(http://www.joemaneri.com), and listen to his extraordinary recordings
(the last ones were on ECM label with his son Mat (viola), and Barre
Phillips (double-bass).

Absolutely seconded. While his music will probably not appeal to
anyone who doesn't like contemporary music such as Feldman, Webern,
or Wolpe, I can confirm that Maneri was one of the hardest-working,
most soulful, most knowledgeable, and most diverse composer/performers
I've ever known. Unfortunately, his "classical" music is virtually
unavailable on disc.
