This fascinating film documents the 1964 U.S. premiere production of
Originale, a Happening by German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Filmed at the 2nd Annual Avant Garde Festival, which was produced by
Norman Seaman and Charlotte Moorman, the stage production at Judson
Hall in New York was directed by Allan Kaprow. Performers include Nam
June Paik, Moorman, Jackson Mac Low and Allen Ginsberg, among many
others.

Here’s something else interesting. It’s from the UK premiere of
MOMENTE in 1973 (Europa Version), transferred from a reel-to-reel of
the BBC broadcast.

It’s the last 20 mins of part 1 and check out how the audience “get
it” when they should be joining in with the applause !
People who attended that performance say there was a real frisson at
this point.

And here you can see the film "TRANS und so weiter..." (albeit in not
as good quality as "Stockhausen's Originale Doubletakes" cited above).
It's certainly worth watching though, just watch Stockhausen's
superhuman conducting:

Yes, excerpts from this film surface from time to time. It is good to
see it again, and one wishes it might someday be issued complete on
DVD with digitally cleaned-up video. One small correction, though:
Originale is not strictly speaking a "happening". It is a composition,
perhaps influenced by early happenings, perhaps influential on later
ones. Thanks for the link.

A few flashes of memory come up in my mind, recalling the time when I
watched the film when it was first shown in German TV (I must have been
around 15). Of the most notable, one is the supper scene when he
mentions the death of Bruno Maderna to his family ("the fat conductor"),
another him asking the French orchestra using no non-Stockhausen Music
when tuning the instruments. And the remark that he would emigrate once
the banks were nationalized.

Strange enough that I don't recall the excerpts from "Am Himmel wandere
ich", although I had watched a live performance of that piece shortly
before (together with some Oboe solo pieces by Bruno Maderna, who had
just died - all in a free concert presented by the German regional
public radio).
