Ive been trying to post this for a while now, with no avail, if its
already been posted, ignore this.

aNyways...

A while back I was in some restaurant when the song "Go WEst" by the Pet
shop boys came on. I found myself singing the words to that praise
song "Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks...." along with teh
pet shop boys. The tunes are virtually identical.

Did the waitress slip something in my coffee, or is this true?

Jaby.

Actually, the Village People did it first, IIRC. :-)

Hmm. Y'know, now that you mention it...

don't ask me.

I didn't see the Newsboys/"You Sexy Thing" comparison.

(Well, actually I do now. I didn't remember how the intro to "You Sexy
Thing" went. I thought we were talking about the body of the song.
Anyway, I see the comparison STRONGLY.)

Not to mention other similar sounding tunez...

* Newsboys "Not Ashamed" chorus == Nick Kershaw's "Wouldn't it be Good"

* Someone mentioned a DC Talk rip of Nirvana or something once...

* From someone DJing tunez at an area event, I heard the opening of one
CCM tune sound a bit too similar to that of Tears for Fears "Everybody
Wants to Rule the World".

* ... any more ???

THANK YOU. For a couple of years now, I've been periodically posting
"say, doesn't "Not Ashamed" sound like "Wouldn't It Be Good," and
nobody that I can recall has agreed. Now I know I'm not crazy. :-)

>* Someone mentioned a DC Talk rip of Nirvana or something once...

Eh, kind of. "Jesus Freak" is a rather obvious Nirvana-esque tune,
made even more obvious when they ended it was a bit of "All Apologies"
in concert.

Hmm. That's probably my #1 favorite 80s tune. Maybe my all-time favorite
tune, if my mood is right. I can't think of any CCM songs that really
sound like it, though. Any idea what it was?

My favorite rip was when Mylon, the rocker, did a VERY Bruce Hornsby song. I
can't remember which album that was on.

That happens a lot.

We're doing several worship songs these days that have the "Hmmmm Bop"
thing happening. And then there's "Hail to the King" which is a cross
between "Free Bird" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale," and of course I play up
the organ parts. ;-)

I've always wanted to do a medly of "Celebrate Jesus Celebrate" and
"Celebration" from Kool and the Gang, both are recorded in C as I recall.

Celebrate Jesus Celebrate
(insert riff from Celebration)
Ya Hoo!

Dunno if that translated exactly...

And we're learning a new one in which we're putting the trumptet part from
Paul Simon's song about "You can be my body guard..."

And people think there's a sacred mystery to worship music. Yeah right,
tell Isaac Watts...

"Again and Again," off of _Face The Music_, I think. I think Jerome Olds
may have written that one, though.

I only remember that one vaguely, but it reminds me of Jon Gibson's "The
Name of the Lord," also a Hornsby rip. That one was articularly strange
coming from someone with the blue-eyed soul chops that Gibson does.

Yeah, I meant to say that the style of Hornsby was imitated, not a specific
BH song. And yes, that is the right song title. I can't find my copy of that
album, but FTM sounds right, too.

that is def the correct one. i love that song, and its very hornsby,
right down to the tone of mylon's voice in the song, the opening
floating sounds of the electric keyboards, the opening solo drum, and
the sound of the piano.

GREAT song.

There are more.

I've mentioned previously that the bass line on the Newsboys "Reality" is
a straight rip from the rap classic "White Lines," which was repopularized
by Duran Duran a couple years back.

Listening to the (still pretty bad, but apparently improving) CCM station
here last night, I heard what was apparently the result of Kathy Troccoli
trying to be Mariah Carey. Specifically, it sounded frighteningly like
"Someday." Shame, too. Katy's cool enough that she doesn't need to do

i've always thought 'jesus freak' sounded VERY much like 'smells like
teen spirit'. newsboys' 'cup 'o tea' is not unlike it, either.

I'm surprised no one's yet mentioned 'You Are My Hiding Place', which I
think was written for the film _The Hiding Place_, or somehow related to
the book it was based on, whatever.

Doesn't Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'The Phantom of the Opera' sound awfully
similar to it? (Of course, in this case, Webber would be the derivative
one, not the Christian composer.)

It's note for note AND rhythm for rhythm, thru the first two phrases. I
didn't realize that YAMHP preceded the Phantom song, though.

You know that song "Groovy Kind of Love"? It *completely* rips off the
melody line of a certain sonatina by Clementi. Unfortunately, I can't
remember which one. :P

"This Night" from Billy Joel borrows heavily from some Beethoven thing
or other, too.

If we're going there:
"Sing Your Praise To The Lord" by Rich Mullins (as recorded by Amy Grant
first and then him)
"Falling Down" by David Meece
and a host of others.

Yeah, But David Meece actually credits the Classical music that he uses in
his songs.
