well, Dogfish Jones is supposedly mixed, mastered,
and delivered. i'll need to hear it myself before
i believe it for sure, but i'm hoping...

it should be out for Cornerstone.

i got to interview Mike for the next issue of 7ball.
he actually decided he'd like to talk about the storyline
(it's another concept record - a good story, at that).

grace,
jeff

How will it be released? And can I order it from somewhere soon? What
label? Okay, annoying fanboy rant over.

Thanks,

I think I read that it will be an REX release.

CD and cassette. no vinyl, sorry.

a CBS near you, mail order (i.e. True Tunes/Rad Rockers),
etc. hopefully by time of Cornerstone.

REX or Flying Tart, i keep hearing one or the other.

by the way, to shed a little light...

my support of this album confused a couple of people. many know
that i personally have been an LSU fan for ages now; Farewell to
Juliet was even covering "The Bomb" at the outset of its career
(complete with wacky doo-wop ending which Mike would have hated).

i've teched for Knott and Aunt Bettys for a few years. i do what
i can to support them cheerfully and reliably. i dig the music,
and it has been great to get to know the guys.

on the other hand, i stand by whatever statements i've made
about Aunt Bettys and their material, some of which isn't really
the type of material i'd suggest that Christian parents get for
their kids (Suicide Sex Doll, the Lush, etc... not exactly praise
and worship music).

mind you, i'm NOT saying it's wrong to appreciate the Bettys album.
i enjoy knott's work, and Andy Carter's guitar playing is way cool.
but they do cross some sort of line of decorum; they're intentionally
going for shock value. the band isn't for everyone.

Knott will go crazy telling people there's nothing wrong with the
songs, people read it how they want to see it, and it's not what
he intended. the artwork of a guy passed out at a bar with Jesus
offering him another drink? Knott says it represents that Christ
is with us in the most desperate of situations, offering "new" wine.

"Mother Trucker," he says, is an anti-abortion song. he has answers
for all of the allegations that CCM protesters have hurled at him.

nonetheless, even though i continue to support Mike, i don't believe
he can put out such material and expect to not be misunderstood.
he'd have to admit in the end that he's more or less asked for it.

anyhow, "Dogfish Jones..." Mike wrote this record with the Christian
market in mind, and i believe he made the most of the opportunity.
the record is personal, -and- entertaining. and i get the impression
that Knott is very genuine with the subject matter.

i happen to really enjoy concept records. i think it would be a great
challenge to try to write a good one myself someday. not many people
make the effort to do them, and Knott has now done three. there's
another reason for my support.

i -do- think it's a good record, and i think it's great that someone
gave Mike the opportunity to create such an album, and get him thinking
along these lines. a topic which involves his spiritual life. plus,
i missed the LSU-styled music, which is quite different than Aunt
Bettys.

here are just a couple of quotes from the upcoming 7ball story. i
won't give much away; you really should check out the mag itself...

"The things that I think really mess people up are envy and strife.
We all have it toward different things and different people. I wanted
to do an album about the envy and strife that I feel from other people,
and that I feel toward people myself. I wanted to mix it all into
some kind of story."

"The idea there is that if you see other people and what they have, and
you let your envy get to you, it destroys you. If you let strife from
others get to you, it destroys you, as well. That's what I call the
"Dogfish Jones." A dogfish is basically a shark. It eats you alive.
The Jones comes in later, when you've just had too much of it."

and yes, i did play bass on this record. but that's certainly not why
i think it's a good record - i hope the bass sounds good and all, but
i did eleven songs which i'd never heard in my life during one five hour
session. i'm as excited as anyone to hear the final product. and with
that limited experience, it's not like you're getting a band member
who's
running around saying "buy my album, buy my album." i'll save that for
Farewell to Juliet... ;-/

it's not my album. it's an LSU album. i'm an LSU fan. i got to play
on an LSU album. how cool is that?

oh, well. blah blah blah. i'm not sure if this post was pointless or
at all beneficial. suffice to say that i do believe Mike may run into
problems with the CCM crowd over aunt bettys, and it's not necessarily
unwarranted. but i'm glad he did this record, and i hope that whatever
the response from the Christian music buying public is, it has a
positive
impact on Mike's life.

i hope when i hear the record that i think it's every bit as good as
my other LSU faves: Grape Prophet, Grace Shaker, and Cash in Chaos. i
can tell you now that i'm no Eric Coombes, though. still, Andy Carter
plays some guitar here, and he's probably my favorite guitar player
anywhere. and Gene Eugene plays a lot of organ. i love Gene's keyboard
playing.

it's way too late, and i need some sleep. but since i don't get to rmc
much, i thought i'd write. e-mail me if you like.

darn. someday i hope to own something by mike knott on vinyl...besides
that aunt bettys 7".

> REX or Flying Tart, i keep hearing one or the other.

i heard that they're being merged into one label. do you know if that's true?

actually, i kind of dig that picture. it has significant meaning to
me...kind of along the lines of what mike says.

> "Mother Trucker," he says, is an anti-abortion song. he has answers
> for all of the allegations that CCM protesters have hurled at him.

you know, i've never thought of mother trucker as an anti-abortion
song...and thinking of it now, i can't see that possibility. am i missing
something? its kind of funny to listen to mike talk about this stuff. when
he was playing here during south by southwest, i was waiting to talk to
him as he was talking to doug van pelt from hm magazine...and i think i
overheard (notice...this is not a direct quote) him saying that its not
"shit" that the band is saying in rocket and a bomb, but "shick" or
something. i thought it was funny. i wonder if he thinks people actually
believe these things he's saying or if he's just having fun. i personally
don't care. i love his stuff and i'm going to continue to support him. do
you cover any of this material in your interview with him?

yep.

yeah, i really dig his concept records. i think doing a decent concept
record would be a challenge. but i think he succeeded, especially with the
grape prophet.

> here are just a couple of quotes from the upcoming 7ball story. i

o.k. i'm still standing by all of my "anti 7-ball" comments, but i will
definitely pick up a copy.

so how was it working with mike in the studio?

> it's not my album. it's an LSU album. i'm an LSU fan. i got to play

very cool.

that would put it in very good company.

you're over 5 ft. tall?

i'm really glad to hear that gene played organ on the album. i think that
will really add a lot of depth to the sound. i'm really looking forward to
the album. considering my financial state, it will probably be one of my
very few purchases at c-stone (as though its actually going to be
available by then).

Jeff, can you give us some insight as to the overall sound and feel to
the album? Is it searing sarcasism, is it dark, is it sweet and
innocent... What are the topics on the album?

it's not really sarcastic, dark, or sweet. it's ... a story. it's
a story about a sailor who gets shipwrecked on the island of envy
and strife.

it sounds like recent LSU stuff, i guess. not as Jane's Addiction
influenced as Cash in Chaos or anything (that'd be tough with me on
bass). it's got a lot more organ on it than Grace Shaker.
