For those people out there who don't know who Gary Hoey is: Gary Hoey is
not a "christian musician". He is just a guy that likes to play his
guitar with lots of energy and feel. Is there such a thing as a christian
intrumental and a secular intrumental?---I don't classify instrumental
music as christian/secular.
Anyways, on his first album _Animal_Instinct_, his does some metal tunes
and some jazz, blues, and some mellow stuff. He plays with Tony Franklin,
a fretless bass master, and the ex-drummer from Quiet Riot. "Mass
Hysteria" is a in-your-face metal tune. This tune must be played loud in
order to enjoy it to its maximum potential. "Hocus Pocus" is a remake of
a song that _Focus_ did in the 70's. I heard the original is much better
although Hoey's version rocks. "Texas son" is a tribute to Stevie Ray
Vaughn. I don't really care for blues, but I really enjoyed this tune.
"Fade to Blue" starts off slow and its played with lots of feel and
emotion. Nice climatic ending.
His second album _Endless_Summer_II_ is the soundtrack for the movie.
Here the drummer is replaced by Greg Bisonette. The drumming is great on
this album. "Low Rider" is a great tune. I like the guitar tones that
Hoey uses and that low wah sound. "Linus and Lucy" is a rendition of the
Peanuts theme. It really rocks! "Surfin' the Dog" is a surf-rock tune.
If there are any Gary Hoey fans out there, let me know.

I've not heard his albums, but he is a favorite in-studio guest of a
local rock station here in Atlanta. He seems to be pretty down-to-earth
and friendly, moreso than the typical "out-on-a-record-promotion-tour"
friendly. He went out and did a concert in an office for a winner of
some drawing, stuff like that.
From what I've heard of his playing, he's really good. The DJ's always
speak highly of him, too.

: Why haven't I heard of this guy???? I really dig the instrumental stuff
: by guys like Lanny Cordola, Joe Satriani, Vinnie Moore etc. Can you give
: some more information about this Hoey guy? Availability of albums, record
: label etc.
: Clive, have you heard of this guy??
Yep, sure have :) I believe he's from California, and is a fairly good
instrumentalist hardrock guitarist. I have a copy of his first solo
album "Animal Instinct" and it's very melodic in the style of Satriani. He
runs the gamut of styles, and occassionally has quite mellifluosly textured
stuff. Technically he's not as good as Satriani/Vai/Moore etc. I haven't
heard his second album, due to Endless Summer II never playing the big screen
here. I can't remember what label he is on, but his debut album is called
"Animal Instinct" and the second is a soundtrack "Endless Summer II".
I believe a third is on the way...

How does Endless Summer II compare with the debut album?
: I'm not a fan, but if what you say is true, then I may be soon.
I used to be a huge fan of guitar instrumental albums, over the years, I
guess it has waned a little. However I have picked up a couple of
instrumental albums recently.
I'll just give a run-down of some of my favourite instrumental albums (guitar)
Surfing With The Alien - Joe Satriani
Definite hardrock guitar imho, searing mellifluous solos, melodic textures,
great feel and ebulliton. Technically flawless (at least to these ears :).
Rising Force - Yngwie Malmsteen
Just sort of for nostalgia really, this album practically spawned a crusade
of neo-classically minded shredmeisters. On it's own this album has it's
merits, very classically orientated, the most emotional and fluid piece would
be "Icarus Dream Suite:Opus 4"... the speed and technical fluidity is
astonishing...
Introduction - Marty Friendman
Just bought this last week, very new-age orientated, which might surprise,
coming from the lead guitarist of megadeth. Not only is there some great
emotional guitar playing, but piano and orchestration also get a chance
to shine. Some beatific passages here, and very soothing and relaxing.
Oh, one other thing, I was playing it quite loud at the weekend, and my mum
remarked that it sounded pretty good!!!
Elegant Gypsy/Splendido Hotel - Al DiMeola
Jazz Fusion stuff here. Not everyone's cup of tea, but 1977's "Elegant
Gypsy" is defintely more influential that most hardrock/metal fans realize.
DiMeola personified the pursuit of technical excellence, but he also did
it with great application, both to melodic style and jazz improvisation.
Great stuff like the latin influenced "Flight To Rio", or the acoustic
bravado of "Meditteranean Sundance", and the starsky-hutch theme-like
"Race With Devil On A Spanish Highway". 1980's "Splendido Hotel" was a
continuation of this, and "Splendido Sundance" was intense acoustic bravado.
Very fluid, and DiMeola picked off the 64th's with relative ease. "Alien
Chase On An Arabian Desert" starts off with a keyboard feel that makes you
think of UFO's and motherships, before the arabian style guitar comes in.
It builds to a great crescendo, and the lead-break around about the 6 minute
mark is superlative. There's also the disco-esque "Roller Jubilee", as well
as the guitar/4-piece string concerto called "Ishafahan". Plus Tamas would
recommend this stuff too... :)
Honourable Mentions to
Time Odyssey - Vinnie Moore
Finesse And Fury - Fourth Estate
Stevie Ray Vaughan
