I heard on the radio that some christian band is doing a cover
of the Nirvana song "All Apologies" and changing the lyric 'Everyone
is gay' to 'Jesus is the way'. Is this true and does anyone know
which band is doing this? I'm Just concerned because this may very
well be the cheeziest thing I've ever heard of and, as a fan of many
christian bands, I really hope it's a nasty rumor.

Just Wondering. :-)

DC Talk appends a reworked piece of "All Apologies" to the end of
the already-Nirvanaesque "Jesus Freak" in concert.

While I'm keenly aware of the cheese factor in CCM, having seen them
do this two times (and noting that "All Apologies" is my favorite
Nirvana song), it's actually kind of cool and not nearly as cheesy
as it sounds.

Aha! I wasn't aware that it was something they did live and that it
wasn't the whole song. The way they put it on the radio, it sounded
as if they actually covered the whole song on an album. Whew!
That's not as cheezey as I had imagined it to be. Thanks for the
input.

that would be dc talk. 99x's morning show had a lot of fun with that one.
it actually made the "celebrity sleeze" segment of the show.

stephen t. today has been cancelled.

Which 99X? We've got a 99X with a "Celebrity Sleeze" segment here in
Atlanta, but I assume it doesn't reach to... Chattanooga, I guess?

over-reaction? dcTALK is contemporary christian music's premier music
act with their latest album, JESUS FREAK, topping the charts and going
PLATINUM.

As a hardcore fan of this talented trio I have to say that they are
neither "cheezy" nor "celebrity sleeze". I believe that the only reason
this is an issue is because the SECULAR ALTERNATIVE PRESS has been
scolding these guys for TAKING A STAND and MAKING A POINT by doing the
Nirvana cover (sort of a mocking political truth).

Also, they have only been playing the "All Apologies" cover during
concert (which, I might add has been getting immensly positive feedback
from fans). The following was taken from the Chicago Tribune, April 23,
1996 in an article reviewing dcTALK's concert act:

As for the players, hats off to drummer Will Denton, a new-comer on
the touring circuit who pounded with Keith Moon fury on "Jesus
Freak." Almost single-handedly, Denton whipped the mosh pit into a
lather as "Jesus Freak" segued briefly into Nirvana's "All
Apologies."

Despite the scolding it has received in the alternative press, DC
Talk stuck to its guns, replacing the Kurt Cobain line "everyone is
gay" with "Jesus is the way" as they've done in past dates. No
apologies from the band.

So LIGHTEN UP...
Just think, if this had been a secular band doing a satire cover of
another band would anyone have said anything? I dunno...

DC Talk is one of the biggest CCM acts. This is true. CCM's "premier"
act? I don't really think so. Nevertheless, topping the charts (what
charts? Christian charts mean NOTHING...) and all that does not exempt
them from producing cheese. Look at their first album. Look at their
second album. Heck, look at parts of their third and fourth albums.

I like 'em, I really do. But let's maintain some perspective.

>As a hardcore fan of this talented trio I have to say that they are
>neither "cheezy" nor "celebrity sleeze".

"Celebrity sleeze" is the segment name for a "miscellaneous entertainment
newsbites" bit on my local radio station's morning show. I don't see where
this is really an issue...

>I believe that the only reason

I haven't seen where anybody in the SECULAR ALTERNATIVE PRESS even knows
who DC Talk is, much less cares enough about them to scold them. And
it's _certainly_ not about "TAKING A STAND" and "MAKING A POINT."

I liked the Nirvana bit in concert, I really did. But let's maintain some
perspective.

>Also, they have only been playing the "All Apologies" cover during

Isn't that [positive feedback] sort of the _definition_ of "fan"? :-)

The people in the "mosh pit" at the DCT show I went to wouldn't know
moshing if it kicked them in the head. But that's neither here nor
there. What does this have to do with anything, anyway? DCT could
sing the phone book and millions of teenagers would swoon...

> Despite the scolding it has received in the alternative press, DC

Er, so what? Yeah, they reworked the lyrics to fit "All Apologies" onto
the end of "Jesus Freak." It was a pretty cool idea. What's the big
deal?

>So LIGHTEN UP...
>Just think, if this had been a secular band doing a satire cover of

I think you're missing several points, here, and blowing the rest of
them out of proportion...

Here's a little thread-history for ya' to munch on, J.J.

My response after being informed of the details of the Nirvana
thing....

Please note the words "Not as cheezey". To date, I still have yet to
actually hear them do the song, so I can't vouch for it's
cheese-factor, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I'd hardly call that 'over-reacting'.
