OK, I'll fill you in. I'm going to back up a bit, as it seems that not
everyone is familiar with Mark's particular brand of insanity. Mark
has been doing stand-up comedy and funny songs for a while now, but
(to my knowledge) "The Last Word" was the first one to have a song
parody on it. So, he's not quite a Christian rendition of Weird Al,
but he does similar stuff on a occasion. From a lyrical sense, other
than the title line, "Baby, Baby, Why Not Me?", to be honest, isn't a
parody of Amy Grant's "Baby, Baby". (Although musically, it's got a
very similar keyboard riff, and as stated before, the video parodies
many of Amy's videos as well as other videos.) The lyrics actually are
a funny song that stands on its own (with no knowledge of Amy Grant's
music). The basic premise is that Mark is "getting up there" (he's 35
by now) and is still single. So, he figures, "Well, Solomon had 700
wives - he must've known something about romance." So, he tries to
pull pick-up lines from Song of Solomon. However, to his chagrin,
women in 1994 just don't swoon to things like (and I quote part of the
chorus):

Your nose is like a tower
Legs like cedar trees
Your hair is like a flock of goats
Pomegranates are your cheeks

Well, I would tend to figure that the tune was a big hit, both in and
of itself, and as a parody. So, more recently, he's done a couple more
parody songs. "Face In This World" is about how he'd like plastic
surgery and whatever else to look better. It starts with:

My hairline's moving, but I am standing still....

The chorus is:

I'm looking for a surgeon
Who'll take the time
To help me find
My face in this world
My face in this world
Not a lot to work with
I need his knife
To help me find
My face in this world
My face in this world

He hasn't recorded this one yet (or at least he hasn't released it as
a recording) and he hasn't released "Some Other Time, Some Other Place",
though word is that he's shot a video for it. I haven't heard it, so
I can't give you a sneak preview.

Finally, onto the inside joke. When I last saw Mark (Fall '93 - which,
BTW, is when I heard "Face In This World"), he talked about literary
references to the seat of emotions. In modern Western civilization, we
say that we love someone "with all my HEART". In other cultures, the
liver or kidneys are the seat of emotions ("Honey, you make my liver
quiver."). Well, in Bible days, it was the bowels. Hence, the line,
"Oh, baby. Oh, baby. You mooooooooooooooove me, baby!"

Mark has three albums and two videos out. I'll be darned if I can
remember the names of the first two albums, but the latest album and
video are both titled "The Last Word". (This is the album/video
featuring "Baby, Baby, Why Not Me?") The first video is called,
appropriately enough, "My First Comedy Video". By the way, Mark does
some serious stuff too (including music), but it's mostly comedy.

Actually, Mark has 3 videos out. We wanted to rent _The_Last_Word_ for
our church's singles group New Year's bash, but couldn't find it and ended
up renting his two videos prior to _The_Last_Word_.

If you haven't seen or heard Mark you're missing a real treat. He's
awesome! His CD's and videos are great.

I am be losing my mind, but didn't Lowry sing with the Gaither Vocal Band
at one time? I may have him totally confused with someone else. (But not
with M. English; I *know* he was with them...) Am I halucinating again?
(I really should keep taking my medication...)

No Steve, you aren't halucinating again. Mark did in fact sing with
the Gaither Vocal band a while back.

No, you're not losing your mind. Mark toured ( still tours? ) with the
Gaither Vocal Band. ( He also sang at the Dove Awards. ) I don't remember
if any of his anecdotes about traveling with the Gaither Vocal Band are on
his albums, but he has shared several anecdotes from traveling with the
Gaither Vocal Band in his live concerts.

Well, Steve, I'm no psychiatrist, so I can't judge your mental state
(although anybody would have to be a bit looney to go to school where we
went), but Mark Lowry was - and still is - a part of the GVB. 99 out of
100 members of the GVB (and there's almost been 100 different ones) have
solo careers as well - to one degree or another. Though, generally, the
guy who acts as the third in the Trio usually doesn't do much solo work.
But, non-third-guy-in-the-trio's have included Mark, Michael (Terry
Franklin took the trio spot before Michael's ill-fated tour began), Terry
(before he took over the Trio spot), Larnelle Harris, and Jim Murray.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of either Mark Lowry or the GVB, but to my knowlege,
he does still sing with them. He was in Dayton with them recently and I'm
pretty sure that he's still with them.
He just does his little comedy bits on the side. I saw him this past weekend
and he was soooo funny.

One of the things he did was something like this:

"....I would go to my room after school, and let me tell you, these songs
really ministered to me: ...
themes from Brady Bunch, Gilligan's Island, Beverly Hillbillies, GreenAcres,
Flintstones, etc...played and the audience sang along....
Imagine: 10,000+ people singing theme songs from old reruns....

Mark still sings with GVB. GVB only does about 25 to 30 dates
each year. This means he can do his comedy routine the rest
of the time. In fact he often does his act while touring with
GVB.
