So I'm reading the Streck/Howard _Apostles of Rock_ book, and enjoying
it quite a bit, but one anecdote from the footnotes section made me
curious.

There was a reference to a Leslie Phillips show at Knott's Berry Farm
in 1987 wherein she was booed off the stage. Anybody know what that
was all about, specifically (I have a general idea, I think). I've
only recently become a fan of her music, so I missed out on all this
stuff the first time around...

I guess we'll have to wait until her next album is released. Perhaps
her "stoning" will occur as a lack of sales.

She was wearing a miniskirt.

Just imagine what would have happened if she'd, oh, gotten a divorce
from her Christian husband and started openly dating a guy in the
"secular" music biz... They probably would have stoned her. What a
difference a dozen years makes.

There _was_ a bit more to the story than that. She was also doing material
from "The Turning," allegedly lacking the requisite number of "jpm's" for
the market. And the fact that she was not hiding her relationship with
Burnett (still married at that time, IIRC) may have contributed to the
chilly reception as well.

When Philips made the Turning, apparently she wanted to be off Word, and she
knew the perfect way to do this was to make a completely honest album about her
faith. Her idea worked. (Though there was the best of album that followed with
"Your Kindness.") In my humble opinion, I find the story interested because I
hold The Turning to be one of my all time favorite albums. I thought it was so
ahead of the time.

I think it'll be a while before Leslie releases another album.

Anyone know when Sam Phillips' next release will be out?

I picked up _The Turning_ for the first time at Cornerstone '98, and I
like parts of it quite a lot. A lot of it _is_ ahead of its time lyrically,
but only some of it musically. A lot of "side 2," to use the tape/LP
terminology, is pretty weak, pretty standard CCM circa 1987. But I
can listen to "River of Love" all day, so that more than makes up for it. :-)

Well, she just parted ways with Virgin Records and all, and AFAIK she
hasn't signed to a new label or anything, so it's anyone's guess.

Supposedly she and T-Bone are working on some material together. They
performed in Chicago a few weeks ago (with some other musicians I hadn't
heard of before), and called themselves "Void." Who knows when or if
the music will ever be released.

Well get to know Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Period.

They were quite good, actually. They performed three songs of their
own, and probably received the loudest applause of the evening. David's
guitar solos were fabulous, and Gillian has a voice you remember long
after hearing it. Do you have any of their albums?

I remember that time. If I recall correctly, that was a pretty intolerant
crowd, for B.J. Thomas was also booed for singing his secular (HUGE) hits,
"Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head", and "Another Somebody Done Somebody
Wrong Song". Leslie was writing some pretty edgy stuff that didn't mention
God or Jesus all the time... maybe she debuted some stuff from her (then)
forthcoming Sam Phillips album, which left me kinda scratching my head...
At any rate, I thought then, and now, that was a sad day in Christian music
history.

How exciting! I've been a fan of David and Gillian's for some time
now... They are very talented musicians. I have both of their albums. I
find it curious that Almo chose to release them as solo albums for
Gillian, though. They are such a duo.

T Bone was an excellent choice as producer, and I think it's so cool to
hear that he and Sam are performing with David and Gillian. Wow.
Excellent music makes me happy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. The first time I saw her in concert
she was opening for the Imperials. What was that 1985?

I was at the infamous Knott's Berry Farm concert and felt bad for her and T-Bone who had to watch the audience walk out. I was just looking up threads about this today as I received a scathing review on Amazon for my book Masters' Mysterium: Wisconsin Dells. The review said that the book was NOT Christian and I probably wasn't either. The Christian market is very set in its ways and Leslie/Sam broke out of that and was punished for it. I was an usher at Knott's during that time and they were tossing her dressing room sign that had her Leslie Phillips name on it. I wish I had kept it.
