Something called "Release Audio Magazine"
that's priced at 99 cents, but which I got free
at a music sale at GNBS (Good News
Bookstore, the local Christian store). It's
okay, not great, tho I've only just started
side two.

I don't have any urge to run out
and buy anything by any of the artists I've
heard so far (Chris Rice, Morgan Cryar,
Sarah Hart, Five Iron Frenzy, Age of
Faith, and Wilshire), but I've heard good
things about The Martins, so maybe the
tape won't be a total waste...

S'okay. My stereo's CD player won't play
anything -- CDs just spin around as the
player tries to find where to start -- so I've
been using my Discman to listen to CDs.

What's really annoying is that I now no
longer have any way of making any mix

what tapes I have at work. About ten

You like it? I bought it along with Bela Fleck's _Left Of Cool_ and only
listened to each one or two times. It's pretty good, but I don't find Cohn
as interesting as Lyle Lovett.

I heard that Flecktone tune from _Left Of Cool_ that Sarah Masen co-wrote
with Bela Fleck on the local eclectic college station this afternoon. "Step
Quiet." Amy Grant does BGVs. "Future Man as 'Royel' " sings lead. The
Flecktones are just plain weird (in a virtuoso kind of way, so it's a cool
kind of weird, I guess).

: as interesting as Lyle Lovett.

Yeah, I'm not completely thrilled with it. As with his previous
albums, it has the one Big Obvious Hit (tm). This time it's
"Already Home," before it was "Walk Through This World" and
"Walking in Memphis." Beyond that, there aren't any songs on it
that I dislike, but there aren't enough that really grab me
either. Too many songs that remind you of a slick fielding .260
hitter with little power and a bit of speed. A few such guys
make your team, but if they're hitting fifth in the lineup, you've
got a problem.

Your comparison to Lovett is interesting, and I'd never thought of
it. I guess they're both rootsy music, but where Lovett was
influenced by Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, Cohn probably
listened to a lot of Jackson Browne (who he thanks in the credits)
and Billy Joel.

Lovett is also heavily influenced by traditional black gospel "call and
response" style.

>Cohn probably
>listened to a lot of Jackson Browne (who he thanks in the credits)

Although I didn't say so, I was thinking more strictly about lyrics in the
comparison. Like most people, my first introduction to Cohn's music was thru
the heavy radio play of "Walking In Memphis." That song is lyrically
interesting to me because it's a regionally based story song with other
elements like suspense and the supernatural. A lot of Lovett's lyrics are
regional ("Baltimore," many about Texas, etc.) and often story based with
unusual imagery. As a whole, I find Lovett's lyrics much more interesting
than the bulk of Cohn's work.

As far as being a musician goes, Cohn hasn't demonstrated that he can
approach Bruce Hornsby or even Billy Joel in terms of ability. He's
certainly a competant performer and a capable composer of tunes, but he's no
virtuoso at the keys. (I'm not even sure I'd rate Billy Joel as such,
although Hornsby is definitely amazing.)
