Enya was raised a Catholic, and does profess a belief in a supreme
being. More importantly, she creates beautiful music that speaks of the
higher aspects of the human condition (love, loss, grief, the beauty of
nature). Her songs have an ecclesiastical style, with soft angelic
choruses and sweet melodies. No witchcraft there.
Is she a born-again, evangelical Christian? No. Does she create music
heavenly music that calms the soul? Yes.
To those who feel compelled to cast stones, more appropriate targets
would be the heavy metal and hip-hop artists who promote msyogony and
hate.
> Is she a born-again, evangelical Christian? No.
Has she told you this?

She may very well be. If you check the translations of her lyrics some are
hymns of praise. Many have to do with Irish and family history. One song
mentions Samhain (Halloween) but more in a historical rather than a
sympathetic context. I know of no lyrics that are Druidic. For good

Record store labels for musical styles have very little to do with
the theology of the artist.
For most record stores, the new age category designates a style
of music, not a type of theology or spirituality.

Maybe the same reason Kenny G is "grouped under" jazz...
[Or more probably for the same reason Doug Trowbridge/Richard Souther and
Tom Howard are often in the New Age category...]

When Pierce Pettis was on the Windham Hill label you often had to look for
him under "new age".
enya's stuff with Clannad was much less "new age", but nonetheless still
quite spiritual.
Would that reasoning explain why King's X is typecast as metal?

Exactly.

Assuming mentioning the moon means that an artist is "new age" or whatever
is quite a stretch. Blatantly Christian artist Dana Russell's last labum
was called _Beyond the Moon_ and featured several references to the moon.
Maybe *THAT* was why the album didn't sell well. (You can now pick up
copies at Family BS for 2.88.)
> Oh well.... what make you ask in the first place?
I didn't. I was just responding to someone who did.
Hmm. That would explain a lot about that Victoria Williams...

I don't know what is so wrong with earth religion references in an
album. I'm not sure that christianity, druidism or even wicca is
neccessarily incompatible. What is wrong with a little paganism among
christians?
Actually, it's not really your business unless she would like to make a
public statement of some sort.
Her family and native country (Ireland) are certainly heavily Catholic
with very old roots and traditions that have come down from the old
pagan influences.
> > theme... the moon, doesn't that hint you on something???
'Shephard Moon' is a term coined by the JPL/Voyager team when it was
discovered that the rings of Saturn were stabilized by the interactions
of several small moons.

Absolutely, I'm a Catholic, but I still enjoy reading Greek Mythology. I
don't believe in Zeus and Ares and all the rest but there's no harm in
educating yourself.

What is so wrong with allowing people to be what they are? The murderers
and crims get caught eventually just as in olden times. What is it about
this this modern civilisation's habg up up about posting and pegging and
delineating peiople according to some mantra. to me it's all crap. enya
if that's what she wants to call herself makes good music. how about
concentarayting on that. she makes music that appeals to our hearts ,
heads or feet. let the music flow and affect these without worrying about
whether it's ideologically pure or not.

And as for the whether she is pagan or christian or whatever, that's her
life. Her songs are of love and love for nature, and the simplicity of
that is good for anyone, no matter their religion... =)

My understanding, based on what I read from a British fan-mag, was
that she was Catholic, but with some firm beliefs in Celtic folk
religion.
Lest we forget what part of the world she's from.

Gee, that would depend on who you ask, wouldn't it? I personally
would object to the Christianity mixed in with otherwise perfectly
good paganism. Many Christians feel that even the tiniest bit of
paganism is 'verboten'.
