I've been given a list of some bands that are alleged to
have Christian leanings:

Ajalon, Animator, Arkangel, The Awakening, Terl Bryant, Robin Crow,
Fourth Estate, Jeff Johnson, Mastedon.....

Does anyone out there have any thoughts on these bands? And
where can I find them? Anybody in the market for trading/selling?

I have a thing for 70's influenced progressive/fusion rock (i.e. Yes,
Genesis, etc.), and was wondering if there was much in the way of
so-called "progressive" Christian music out there. I've heard Iona,
but that's about it.

Thanks!

Pat

some of Jeff Johnson's stuff could be called progressive but it's been my
experience that he's not real consistant. Mastedon, imo, is not progressive
at all, although they are very Christian, they're more of just a straight
rock sound.

haven't yet heard The Awakening. i do know they are a Christian Goth band
in South Africa that i am getting ready to trade for. as far as i've been
able to tell they are only distributed in SA.

Animator's "Gallery" would be directly up your alley, but you'll have
a great degree of difficulty locating it now. it was an indie, and is
now out of print. the band's audible influences at the time were Yes,
ELP, early Genesis (they used to cover In The Cage and Lamb Lies Down
on Broadway), Kansas, Pink Floyd. Later material took a turn in the
Dream Theatre direction, and was excellent, but never recorded. :-(

Animator material will probably be available soon from a customizable
on-line CD provider. more details as they're available...

the "Awakening" referred to in the original list is a prog-oriented
band, definitely not Goth, from Canada. it morphed by way of a couple
of principal members into an excellent pop band (with prog influences
here and there) called One Hundred Days.

In response to progressive Christian music, if you like a little of the
old and a little of the new with lyrics of peace and LOVE, I suggest
checking out Lenny Kravitz. Surely. if you listen to the lyrics, he is
a Christian and he's a rocker. He talks about God all the time in
referece to EVERYTHING...giving thanks mostly....I just saw him live
last night at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. It was my first time
seeing him, and let me tell you, it was a spiritual experience. The
crowd was like no other that I've encountered to this day, it was like
they were all on the peace and love wave and no one was taking them
down..Lenny came out and lifted with his songs of Love (Let love rule,
Freedom train, Live ect...) There was almost a sermon feel to the show,
the crowd was way involved with singing and everything. Anyway, thats
my suggestion for Prog. Christ. Music with a classic feel. P>S> He
writes & plays everything on his albums...he's just a superb interpreter
of the soul. Thanks for your time, Jacki Weiss

Arkangel, a Houston-based group, released one album, The Warrior, in
1980. I don't think I've ever heard a better, more interesting, more
creative Christian music project (and I've been listening to Christian
music for twenty years) than this album. It is not exactly what I would
call progressive, but definitely innovative and intriguing. I had the
opportunity to see them perform in 1986; this was the last concert I knew
they did.

Kemper Crabb headed this project. A few years later he released The
Vigil. The most recent work he did (that I know) was with a group called
Radiohalo; I wasn't very impressed. The Warrior has been out of print
for over 15 years. I am so sorry I never had bought the album. I dubbed
a friend's album a few years ago. I don't currently know where that tape
is. I hope someone eventually rereleases this on CD.

BTW, Arkangel didn't just have Christian leanings. The warrior was like
a rock opera of the God of the Bible and his many characterizations
(e.g., creator, warrior, savior, Lord, etc.). Many of the lyrics were
actually passages from the Bible. In addition, you would not believe the
array of instrumentation used in this recording.

Doug Van Pelt, editor of Heaven's Metal, would probably know more than me
about how to get a hold of a copy of this album or whats happening to
members of the group now: http://place2b.org/cmp/hmmag/.

Check Iona's web site for info on Terl Bryant.

But regardless of your assessment of Johnson's "progessivity", let it be
said that he demonstrates much more than "alleged" "Christian leanings".
He's definitely an orthodox Christian seriously committed to expressing his
faith through his art.

Terl Bryant was until very recently the drummer for Iona.
There's a news story about his departure at

Ajalon is available through the rick wakeman command center (www.rwcc.com) .
Look under Hope Records.
It is blatantly Christian neo-prog, similar to Marillion.
Echolyn is the best in prog, but a little more subtle in it's Christianity.
Find a link for Syn-Phonic music. You can still order As The World from
them, which I would do immediately. It is AWESOME.
Try Kerry Livgren, available through Numavox Records. He was the creative
force behind Kansas.
Arkangel was available on CD through Rad Rockers online. You'll have to do a
search to find it.

Here is another list, with links to sound bites:

<HTML>
<BODY>
JEFF'S BIZARRE, QUESTIONABLE LIST OF CHRISTIAN PROG/ART ROCK, HOPEFULLY ;-)
Yes, Jeff's Christian prog/art rock list will look a little different. I
have
made it an HTML document so I can run a program on it that will check the
URLs
in this file to see if they are working. Basically, if you want to hear the
sound clips mentioned on the URLs below, ignore the part that goes like
<li><a href=
and only use the part that starts with either
http://
or
ftp://
Hope you don't mind the confusion & it should cut down on having dead links.

The following begins with posts sent to the Livgren list. My comments will
be
prefaced by > (I know, it's usually the other way around, but it's a long
story). I'll keep adding to this file when possible. I realize one
person's
prog is another's alternative, so I'm erring on the side of being too
inclusive.
I'm adding reviews of the CDs I have (which have no web sound clips) in the
format below. Notify me if your e-mail address changes. Unfortunately I am
woefully ignorant about specific songs of groups used for comparison, I
mostly
know their general sound. There also seems to be 3 distinctive sounds
called
progressive: 1) music using lots of different possibly unusual instruments
2)
"new age" style synthesizer stuff and 3) long songs/time changes. I prefer
the
latter. It's also a mystery why some of the newer stuff is being labelled
prog.
I'll tell you now you must register to use the http://www.worldwidemusic.com
website & it's slow but it has the most sound clips I've ever seen. Listings
for
total time & format of sound clips have begun. I won't bite & need your
help to
keep up with URLs (250+ so far) so LET ME KNOW WHAT YA THINK!

The Awakening - Very rare and hard to aquire, great stuff from Canada. Their
_Into Thy Hands_ (only CD they had, other only on LP and tape) includes a
cover of the Yes song "Onward".

From: RaSmitaz <RaSm...@aol.com>

Hey Ya'll, I'm new to the crowd. I've been a Kerry Livgren fan(Kansas, A.D.)
for some time now-1978 to preasant. I love progressive rock, but have had
such
a hard time finding real quality in the christian music biz (guess It
doesn't
sell well). The list Bill gave will help, thanx. I really dig The neo
classical rock fusion stuff out there-Vinnie Vincent in particular. He has
many Progressive elements in his songs. He also gives thanks to "God" for
the
gift of music.

>RaSm...@aol.com made a mistake in the guy's name-it's really Vinnie MOORE.
>For the record, his hardest stuff is about as hard as I generally like.

Another band that is progressive instumental, Fourth Estate, out of

"as the world" is great, as is the previous one "suffocating the
bloom" (this is totally out of print i think). however, ATW
and "when the sweet turns sour" should both be available. (GFT
records in england has both for 11 quid each)

i have "into thy hands". i find it absolutely terrible, if anyone

one of the guys from glass hammer is also in a prog-doom-metal band

this is on the german label insideout, and came out in europe
ages ago, along with the platypus album that he plays on
with dream theater's john myung and derek sherinian.

the s/t, StB and AEB are all out of print. good luck on finding any
of them. i seen a copy of the s/t auctioned for about $100 on rmp.
(i wouldnt part with mine for that!)

Check out CD releases from Kerry Livgren (formerly of Kansas).
http://www.cjnetworks.com/~livgren/

Kerry's done several band and solo projects. There are alot of prog
tendecies there. But not as much as he had with Kansas.

In fact, for a great secular prog album that was really a Chrisitian album
(if that makes sense) is Kansas' _Vinyl Confessions_. This is John Elefantes
first work with Kansas.

There are several prog bands out there that have Christians in the group
even though they lyrics aren't overtly Christian. These bands include
Iluvatar, Shadow Gallery, and Cairo.

Those of you interested in Christian themes in music may

Down on Broadway, and read some of the stuff I've been
writing in the Song Explanations of The Genesis Discography
about the Christian influence in these songs.

How To Get
The Genesis Discography

ANNOUNCING: The New, Typeset Version!

The Genesis Discography has been typeset
for the first time in history.
When you print this version out, it's just like a book.

Note: Currently, available as a Word 97 document. If you
don't have Word 97, a free viewer is available from Microsoft.
Future plans include a plain text and PostScript version.

LATEST VERSION: January, 1998

This is announcement posted frequently by Discography
editor Scott McMahan.

What is The Genesis Discography? It is the Genesis fan's
companion, a compendium of information about the band and its
releases. Some of the stuff you'll find includes:

- Information on band members and other personalities
- Albums and singles and other releases by the band
- Solo albums and singles and other releases by all
current, former, and other band members and almost members
- Bootlegs, radio shows, and other unofficial releases
- A complete Brand X discography
- A brief history of Genesis
- Explanation of Elements in Songs -- literary, historical,
mythological, British references in songs are explained.
- The Annotated Lamb Lies Down on Broadway -- what is the
Lamb about, anyway?
- Tour Dates, Set Lists, And Gear -- what they played when
using what instruments.

If there's a question you have about Genesis that the
Discography does not answer, I'd be surprised -- let me know
and I'll include it! Before you ask anywhere else, this
document should be your first stop. That's what it is for.

(IMHO) There are no bands in the CBA realm that come close to Yes and
Genesis.

I'm not saying these suggestions are bad, and Animator probably comes as
close as any, but really there are none that I know of.
There are a lot of Christian "Prog" and Art Rock fans, and this is a common
question here...and it's one that I wish there was a better answer too, if
any one knows of any, I would love to hear them.

Well... there is Rick Wakeman, formerly of Yes. He has a few Christian
CD's, though they are hard to come by. Rick started a label called HOPE
Records and signed a group called Ajalon, who's influences are Yes,
Genesis, Marillion, Iona, etc. Ajalon did issue one CD with the HOPE
label and the CD (as well as Wakeman's) is available via mail order at
the Calvary Chapel company Word For Today in Costa Mesa, CA. I don't
have a number nearby, but directory assistance should do the trick.

Also, I should recommend for those who are searching for "contemplative"
progressive music (though it's not really prog-rock) get some Jeff
Johnson. In fact his newest CD is a beautiful release on the mainstream
label HEARTS O' SPACE called "Prayers Of St. Brendan".

The group that Tony Shore mentioned, Animator, were an awesome attempt
at doing Yes-like music. They made their own CD independantly, they have
since broke up I think.

Then there was The Awakening, who even covered a Yes song on their
second CD with Word/Reunion.

Brent Bourgois has recorded a solo CD which I thought had some prog
ideas, "Come Join The Living World". Then he produced a CD for Cindy
Morgan, a singer known previously for her pop and dance tunes ala Janet
Jackson / Paula Abdul. The album was a wonderful departure from all
that, titled "Listen". They've combined for another CD that re-tells the
last 8 days of Christ's life. She is touring this album playing shows
sometimes with just a piano and her husband narrating the story. It was
a "prog" experience to me. It reminded me of very early classic Elton
John... only better.

I guess that's about it. Not much is it?! I am friends with Rick
Wakeman. We went to Word Records once together in 1994 with the hope
that they would take on the HOPE label. Everybody we talked to at Word
were very keen on Rick and his career. We were hopeful they would take
on a serious musical that Rick developed called "The New Gospels" and
possibly a prog-rock album that would maybe feature the likes of Chester
Thompson (Genesis drummer), Robin Crow (multi-guitarist), Phil Keaggy,
Matthew Ward, Deen Castronova (drums), Rick Cua (bass), as well as
others. These artists were only ideas that Wakeman and I talked about
although most of them were spoken to directly and agreed that if we got
something together they would be happy to take part. Word weren't
interested I guess. But they are not alone, Christian record companies
are not interested, I guess because they only want that pop or
alternative stuff that us prog fans could care less about. They only
want the next big thing. Oh well.... back to my Genesis CD's.

By the way. Rick Wakeman has been working on an album for the major
label EMI, "Return To The Centre Of The Earth", which is a 25th
anniversary project for his popular album of 1974, "Journey To The
Centre Of The Earth." This album will feature a number of all-star
guests, such as Trevor Rabin (former Yes, and composer of Armegeddon ST
score), actor Patrick Stewart narration, Ozzy Osbourne (Rick is a
believer of being in the world...), Bonnie Tyler, Justin Hayward (Moody
Blues) and possibly one more very popular singer- in fact the most
popular lead singer of a rock group save McCartney or Jaggar... can't
say!!!

Gotta go!

Terl Bryant has released two solo albums, as has Dave Fitzgerald.
Troy Donockley has released one. There are reviews of the most recent

Ceasefire are a local hardcore band who just keep getting better and

no they are not the same band. echolyn have 5 releases. 1) echolyn ('91),
2) suffocating the bloom ('92), 3) and every blossom EP ('93), 4) as
the world ('95) and 5) when the sweet turns sour ('96). (i have them
all except the EP). the band split into two, three members formed
a band called "still" who were a bit more alternative/rock sounding
(this band changed their name again, but i forget what it is now)
and the keyboard player formed a jazz fusion group called finneus gauge.

Glad to hear it then.

They even did a short US tour last year, not that it would've been
your scene :) Their first album was called _Statement_ which is
probably a fair comment on their lyrics, which have appeal to the
straight edge crowd.

DT consists of some pretty amazing musicians. For me, listening to DT is a
mathematical exercise (clever rhythms, transitions and time signatures).

My prayer though is not for a Christian version of any particular band or
music type, but for the creativity bug to hit Christian musicians (e.g., Phil
Keaggy, Arkangel, Iona and, most recently, Burlap to Cashmere).

Going back into history, After The Fire released a fantastic piece of
prog rock in 1978 called Signs of Change. Vinyl only, and hopelessly
rare. Their fan club released a white-label cassette of it in 1981. The
sound was very moog, with acoustic texture.

Even further back - around 1970 - there was a band called Out Of
Darkness. Fronted by Wray Powell, who looked and sounded like Hendrix.
There were two albums, I think, on uk labels. A CD was released a few
years ago by Plankton.

Bristol's Amaziah put out a single album (vinyl only) in 1979, that is
also hopelessly rare, but a remixed version was issued by Tunesmith in
Canada in 1983 (vinyl & cass).

before
Paley's Watch - November
Marc Catley & Geoff Mann - Fine Difference
Marc Catley & Geoff Mann - The Off the End of the Pier Show (instrumental)

If your looking for music that doesn't revolve around strictly Christian
material but involves Christian attitudes than check out Salem Hill. Highly
recommended are "Catatonia" - about a man unable to dream and loses his way in
his mundane existance. His choice comes down to surrendering to his catatonic
trance or return to the world; and "The Robbery of Murder" - a story about a
child's father killed by a drunk driver and the child's obsession to regain his
marred childhood while exacting revenge upon his fathers killer. Very good
stuff.
