Nope... they're into New Age themes in their lyrics and I met the band
last December.. the guitarist, though, is a really nice guy.. the
keyboardist probably thinks I need my medication dosage increased! ;-)

I don't know much about their Christian validity, but I can tell you that
there are references to the "afterlife" and the fact that "he is risen" as
well as references of symbolism of light, dark, and the spiritual world.
As an added twist, on the inside cover of the DT album, "Images and Words"
there appears to be a modified "sculpture" of the sacred heart of Christ
which looks to be made out of wood and bob wire fence. Interesting, I thought.
At any rate, I can't really tell if they are a Christian band, unless they
come out and say that they are. I really don't care if they are or not person-
ally, they're music is the most refreshing that I have listened to since
Marillion and King's X. Which brings up an interesting point. If you listen to
to any of the following groups, I thing you'll really like Dream Theater:
Rush
Yes
Marillion
Queensryche
Genesis
King's X
And obviously there are other bands out there too with similiar styles
but these are just a few to compare to DT.
Hope this helps.....

Phil,
Are they Christians though? As in, is any member of the band a Christian?
They may not be a "Christian band", but may have Christian values, and I am
curious to know if they said anything to that effect.

I never had the chance to share with them in the realm of faith - I'm
afraid I do not know, yet their lyrics do not reflect their faith provided
they be Christians at all...
After reading the words to their music it is highly doubtful to me that
they are "serious" about their faith IF any of them are Christians. I
tend to doubt that any of them are UNFORTUNATELY. Musically this band
is AWESOME and it's too bad that there aren't many (if any) Christian
bands with this kind of talent. I happen to love progressive rock which
Dream Theater borders on. I wish there were lots of Christian bands in
this genre and others that really put out good music and put on great
stage shows. I think God deserves the best. I listen to alot of
Christian music because it is lyrically appealing to my spirit, but musically
most of it is pretty average. Just one guys opinion.
I agree, most of the Christian rock I listen to is very boring musically
except for King's X and The Galactic Cowboys. I think there are some quality
lyrics in Christian rock today, but it seems musically that most bands aren't
really experimenting in any "progressive/art" rock. I'm talking about music
similiar to such groups as Rush, Yes, Marillion, King's X, Genesis and Dream
Theater. If anyone has any suggestions as to any Christian bands similiar to
this style of music please let me know....until then, all I can do is keep
the faith. :)
Thanks Edwin. You hit the nail on the head. I really enjoy the
progressive rock style. I would love to hear about some bands
the play that style with Christian lyrics. It would be awesome.
If I was a bit more talented, I'd do it myself.
BTW - What is King's X and the Galactic Cowboys like. I've never
heard of them.

Just a suggestion: maybe it's time to put this information in the FAQ
that Tom Moellering posts here about once a month. I can't really help
much with Christian Progressive Rock suggestions, but I *do* know that
this topic has been discussed on r.m.c. about every other week for the
last several months.
No disrespect intended toward either Big Ed or Kelly - I assume they
just missed this information. And I also realize that a certain
amount of repetitive postings comes with the territory. But if a
list of Progressive Christian Bands can be incorporated into the FAQ,
those who want the information can obtain it fairly easily, and
the rest of us can be spared the lists that we've already seen
numerous times.
I guess I should also note that the last thing I want to do is play
Net Cop, and I have no intention of inhibiting discussion. If you
want to discuss, then discuss away. But if a *list* of recommended bands
is what people are after, then the FAQ can easily accomodate such a need.
What do people think?
