INDUSTRY
By Rick Welke
According to the Recording Industry Association of America, mainstream rock
music is experiencing a major decline in sales, as stated in the R.I.A.A.'s
yearly demographical survey of U.S. music purchasers. Yet Gospel music (as
it is stated in the report) escalated from a 4.5 percent share in 1997, to
6.3 percent last year. This was the single greatest growth of any individual
music genre. The United States recording industry grossed $13.7 billion in
sales in 1998, a 12 percent vault from $12.2 billion in 1997. Gospel music
still accounts for more sales than the classical (3.3%), jazz (1.9%) and new
age (.6%) genres combined.

Aunt Bettys vocalist Mike Knott and Social Distortion guitarist Dennis
Dannell have formed a new band called The Strung Gurus. Dannell states, "we
took on the difficult task of writing songs that don't sound like anyone
else ... we wanted to stretch ourselves with songs that are catchy, but also
transcend what's happening on the pop charts." Some have said the sound is
like Bob Dylan meeting the Violent Femmes with a dash of Smashing Pumpkins.
