I have a very long hair and some of my relatives & friends condemned it,
some don't, and some no comments....I like my hair and I'm not going to
cut it for anything.....Is that a bad attitude????Is it wrong to like
your hair....

Any suggestions ??? comments ??? I played in our church band, and I love
to play & use my talent for the Lord but I'm thinking of quitting
because I might offend some people when they see me in front with my
long hair...(don't want to be a stumbling block to them)......but don't
want to cut my hair either....

And I am very defensive if someone comment about my hair....(Don't get
me wrong, I'm idolizing my hair, I just plain like them)

I will cut them if anybody can prove to me it is wrong.....Thanks

Labson,

Sorry for using your alias or last name, your first name never
followed your article.

First, you are flamebaiting with this topic. There are already
several individuals which enjoy stirring readers of this
newsgroup. Hopefully, your not one of them.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with the length of your hair.
You know this to be true, you have already stated so. However,
you must ask yourself why you're so concerned with the issue !!

Your relationship with the Lord is yours and yours alone. Your
liberty is complete in Jesus. Your salvation is complete in
Jesus. Your witness is your responsibility !! You do more damage
to your witness in defense of your liberty than with the physical
appearance. Would you have followed John the Baptist ?? He would
have scared me to death. He made no defense to his appearance, he
simply preached truth !!

Praise God, that he has given you the ability to sing !! Music is
a tremendous tool and a powerful weapon against the devourer !! Use

Joel,
Wear your hair the way you want. God cares about how you adorn your
soul, not your head. If some people have a problem with this, that's a hurdle
THEY need to cross. Having had this same problem when I was in my teens, I
speak from experience. I will point out to you the same thing I pointed out
to a couple of congregations/preachers as I left their presence.
God told us to not judge. Jesus told us to love one another.
Follow the commandment(s) and you will be happy. If how you
wear your hair or how you dress for church really makes a
difference, that is between you and God. No one else. (period)

The secret, Joel, is to present your point in a loving manner. Don't
attack them with it. (As soon as I have retired from the military reserve,
I intend on growing my beard back and my hair longer.) Good luck, Joel.

May the Lord Bless you and Keep you. Jerry

Is it clean and tidy?

If yes, quit buggin; if no, take a shower, then quit buggin.

Whenever someone says anything about my hair, I take the position that
we were wrong to break the gret traditions of the renassiance and then
let them figure out whether or not I'm serious.

I would cut mine for money, though.

Long-hair has nothing to do with christianity. A lot of depictions of Jesus show him with long-hair. Everybody has their own opinions about how a christian should look. Not everybody has to be clean-cut. I think it all boils down to what kind of person you are inside. Do you have a faithful relationship with Jesus?? That's what matters. For those who condemn you, it's their sin to deal with. We are not hear to judge each other. Who knows...when we get to heaven, Jesus might have long-hair too.

huh? There's NOTHING WRONG WITH LONG HAIR! This is just a bunch of cultural
balderdash. Tell them you're a Hasidic Jew and have to wear it like that.
Tell them Jesus and the disciples wore long hair (most religious Jewish men
did), then if they start to really get holier than thou on you, turn to the
passages about Samson losing his strength and annointing when he lets his
hair be cut, and all kinds of terrible things happen from then on. Do you
want to lose your annointing? exactly. So you don't dare cut it!

I'm kinda being a little silly, but I think anyone who draws some kind
of "should" or "shouldn't" spiritual conclusion from hair length has got
a looooong way to go in their walk with God. God doesn't care how long
your hair is.

The stuff about Samson is good (silly that you would even have to talk
to people about this - it's really none of their business how you wear
your hair. People like that are just trying to be controlling and
manipulative. Next thing you know they'll be telling you what career
to have and who to marry! sheesh!), but even better, you can talk to
them about the scripture which says to be a Jew to the Jew and a Greek
to the Greek. Paul (?) is referring to cultural things, not blatant sin
so they can't rebut your argument by saying something like, "well, do you
have to be an alcoholic to reach alcoholics?" because sin is a totally
different thing. If by wearing long hair you are able to have an impact
on other guys with long hair - even if the only impact you have is showing
them that it's ok to be a Christian and there are people who will accept
them if they become a Christian - then you should keep your hair long
by all means.

What do these people think John the Baptist looked like, roaming the
desert in a loincloth, eating locusts and yelling "Repent for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand!"? He had long hair and locust
breath and no polyester pants and certainly no tie! Why, his bare
chest probably showed! (gasp!). I think he would have fit right
in at a metallica concert and not even drawn a second glance.

I'm so tired of people mixing up American White Culture with
Christianity. They are NOT one and the same! Christianity crosses
ALL cultures. What if you're an Amazon Indian wandering the jungle in
a loincloth - does this mean Christ didn't die for you? What if your
face breaks out? Do you go to hell? What if being bald isn't great
in some culture and they say "Brother (people who are about to try
to manipulate you love to start with "brother...") I must rebuke
you for this nakedness of the head - it's unbecoming and a bad
witness".

I REALLY hope you don't get pushed around by these people becasue
GOD has a plan for your life and it's probably nothing like what
they assume it "should" be. We're each unique and created with
certain talents and tastes, and instead of fighting that and trying
to be what someone else is comfortable with - we should be who we
really are, reach people we can really reach, express what we can
really express, and live fully and freely in the light of God's love
and truth. All this nitpicking is for the birds. It'll all burn just
as hot in the end - big houses, small houses, mercedes, old clunkers,
messy houses, clean houses, neat clothes, messy clothes, long hair, short
hair. The eternal stuff is who we are inside and how are depth of
relationship is with the Lord. The rest is just chaff.

So I hope you just go ahead and be yourself. Move to California maybe?
My church has more longhaired guys that short haired almost ;-)

I sometimes go to a heavy metal church where ALL the guys have long
hair, most have tatoos, and they all wear leather. The pastor's hair
is almost to his waist. Maybe there, if you cut your hair they
exhort you "Brother, we're concerned about your walk...your witness...
we feel the Lord is saying you can't just up and cut your hair like
this. The Lord wants your hair at least past your shoulders, brother.
Let us disciple you...." hahaha just kidding.

Hi all!

I just read Stacey O'Brien's post and I almost fell off my chair from laughter.
Thanks for starting my day in such a humorous, but meaningful way! I am now
trying to conceive the concept of a heavy metal church -- THAT sounds like
an experience!

As for hair, my own hair has been many different lengths at different times.
I found that I got a lot of strange looks when it was long, but that's not the
reason that it is short today. Maybe the problem stems from being in the
wrong area of the country, as Stacey suggests. Last spring (when I had longer
hair), I visited my sister in Santa Cruz, CA. I went from a culture in central
PA where I had "long" hair to a culture in CA where I was very conservative.
It depends on your perspective, I suppose.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't long hair an "in" style these days? A lot of
popular men have been shown recently with long or longer hair. Not that I'm
saying that you should do something because the rest of the world does it...
which of course, we all know would be a REALLY bad trend to follow.

My favorite thing to tell people when they make comments about my hair is that
they should only get concerned if I start wearing ribbons and bows in it.
And even then, if I'M okay with my decision to do this, then I can't see why
it would concern other people so much that they would get all stressed out
over it. Perhaps suggest that they switch to decaf?

Peace in the love of our Saviour!

I had this discussion several years ago. (I only get 1-2 haircuts per year,
so my hair goes from shoulder-length to above the ears.) Someone will
probably give you the scripture (Paul, I believe) that says something along
the lines of "even nature tells us that men should have short hair." Let
me debunk that for you, in advance. In the next scripture (I believe),
it also says that women should have longer hair than men. (My pastor's
wife (at that time) had very short hair.) So, at worst, it is no worse for a
man to have long hair, than for a woman to have short hair. Use that one
on them.

God Bless,

Ted

Here's a little more to add to the subject...
Read 1Corinthians 11:1-16, verses 7,14 and 16 in particular. Verse
16 is very clear and direct. I thought about analyzing the passage in
this post but I can't stand the flaming that goes on. Please read this
passage. It's key to the issue of long hair, short hair, respect,
custom, authority, etc.

I have short hair but I've encountered this issue with my friends.
When I was in High School the guys with long hair tended to be more
rebellious but I don't think I see the connection anymore. Long hair
is quite a fashion these days. I will not go into Church with my head
covered and will not grow long hair for this reason but that's personal
concerning the passage mentioned above. To teach the passage above is
one thing but to impose it goes against verse 16. This symbol wasn't
always this way. Read Numbers 6.

PS If anyone has any thoughts concerning 1Corinthians 11:10 "...because
of the angels." please e-mail me - it does not concern music so please
don't post. I haven't figured this out yet.

to put another twist on things, in deep redneck country short hair is
a "sure sign" that someone is gay. and we all want to avoid the
appearance of evil now don't we? (1/2 :^)

naah, decaf's boring. wouldn't be a bad idea to lighten up. hair
length doesn't -mean- anything unless the individual -wants- it to
mean something. and you can't tell what that is unless you ask, which
might just be another way to make some friends. (if you do it right.)

works for me anyway. i get mostly nice comments about my hair & have
2 friends who originally approached me about it. i -did- get one
"You look like a girl!" objection, so i grew a goatee. ;^)>

This answer may be slightly different from the many answer that tell
you that lenght of your hair is irrelevant and not important. I do not
believe that appearance by itself matters to God (some other posts have
given scritpures to this matter - I believe Paul talks about this in Romans).
What does matter, however, is your heart and the reason you are wearing
long hair. If your long hair is a statement of rebellion against
family, society, the curch, etc. then I do believe that "the expression
of your rebellion - long hair" is sin and God will - if your truly
seek Him - convict you about this matter. Nowadays, the length
of most peoples hair is not a statement of rebellion, but a statement of
fashion and as such I believe that the lenght of your hair is irrelevant
to your relationship with God.

I think Henrik gives a reasonable answer. I think anything in this area
largely reverts to motivation and the reasoning of the heart (there is the
one verse about long hair being a man's shame, but I haven't really come
to any conclusions on the meaning of that at this time).

I had an interesting situation come up over Christmas. My mother complained
about both the length of my hair (not quite shoulder length, but longer than
most men's) and the way I dress (rather causual, some might even say
slovenly, at times). Nonetheless, I don't think appearances are that
all-fired important myself. One exception, however. My mother felt that
I wasn't showing respect to her by dressing the way I do when I see her and
go to events with her. Scripture does tell me to honor my parents, and
since
her suggestion does not contradict any Scripture per se that I know of, I
have decided to dress more formally when I am in her presence. Again, it
depends on our resoning. If we say, "I'm going to have long hair, doggone
it, and that's the way it is, I don't care what anyone thinks", then I
would submit that that is a sinful attitude - not the act of having
long hair itself. My $.02.

Well, it has nothing to do with Christian music, but my Dad
& I used to have this discussion regularly back in the
late 60's / early 70's when I was living at home... and I
finally went to my Mom (who did the haircutting in the
family) and said, "OK, make it like Dad's..." He came
home from work and saw my shiny new brush cut, his jaw
dropped, and... he never said a word to me about my hair
length after that, even though it grew and grew the next
few years. It's gone back and forth over the years (last
haircut: early '89 :-) ... and I think maybe "respect" is
indeed the key word here.

I've gone to job interviews with shoulder length hair,
and I always made a point of specifically asking, "is
my hair length a problem? I would be willing to cut it
if it was, but I prefer having it long..." This shows some
respect for a potential employer (even if they don't ask
me to cut my hair, I've offerred) and might make the
difference between getting an offer or not...

Hair length is, in general, a "first impression" thing.
If one has long hair and an attitude problem, it could
well inspire someone to hope that getting you to cut
your hair would fix your attitude problem, they might
well ask you to cut your hair... (obligatory Christian
music comment: many Christian musicians these days wear
their hair long. Any personal experiences, positive or
negative, on how this might affect one's ability to
minister through Christian music????)

the passage is from 1 Cor. 11. The conclusion that I have come to is
this: according to the societal trends at the time Paul was writing,
long hair form men was shamefull as was short hair for women. Also at
that time it was shameful for a woman to not have her head covered
since this was what prostitutes did.

I came to some of these conclusions by considering: why did hair
length have anything to do with shamefull/not shamefull. I also
consider a good (female) friend of mine who is naturaly bald. Is she
in sin?

Some parts of Paul's writings disturb me especialy from I Cor 11.
verse 8 seems to contradict verse 12. Didn't the situation of man
being the head of woman stem from the curse from the garden which the
second Adam came to destroy?

My covictions are always open to discusion so please talk to me!

On a similar note, I wonder what Paul (and other letter writers) would
think if they knew we considered their letters "God's word". ????????

I certainly think that much of Paul's writings were inspired by God.
But, can a human vesel infalibly convey the intentions of an infinite
God. Protestants believe that Paul spoke (through his letters) with
"God's authority". But they reject the God-authority of the Pope.
Just some musings. I refuse to stop thinking!!!

(all this stuff is sort of out of bounds for this group, but good
discusion is hard to come by. talk by e-mail if you wish)

Phil,
(My last comment not related to Christian music.) I for one believe that
Paul was 'inspired' by God in his writing; however, I also believe that many
evangelists are inspired in their work, but still get off the beaten track with
some of their work. (Not a change of subject)
If Jesus had intended us to live by a series of rules and religious laws
would he not have laid them out for us while he was here? I personally do not
believe this. He told us to love one another as we love ourselves. Why do
religions (and I use that word specifically) insist on creating a list of items
that people have to do to receive God's UNCONDITIONAL love?? If we care for
and THINK of others as we wish to be thought of would we not live closer to
the ways that Jesus intended? If we spend our time criticizing people for dark-
ness in their dress/grooming, and to that matter their music, how can we see
the light of God shining in them??
I am not criticizing any posting on this board, or (to get back to the subject)
am I criticizing Paul. I just thought that people are always interpreting what
Paul, Luke or any of the other gospel/biblical authors have 'personnaly' said
in their writings. Maybe we should SIMPLY study what JESUS said and intended
and take the others as food for thought and clarification if what Jesus said
was a little difficult to understand.
Now that I got that off my chest :)

May the Lord bless you and keep you, JLS

Ok, as a metal/thrash journalist I figured I'd add my $0.02 worth into the
subject of long hair..

There is absolutely, positively NOTHING wrong with having long hair!
Society decides our look, but God looks at the heart... why should we be
concerned with our brother's appearance (the biggest problem I have with
churches these days) when we should be more concerned with getting the
Gospel out and building up those within and ultimately glorifying God..

I heard from a reliable friend of mine a few years ago on the passage in 1
Cor. 11 about Paul saying it to be shameful for a man to have long hair..
to understand that passage in light of Scripture's dealing in general with
appearnce (see 1 Sam 5 I think about God looking at the heart) you have to
remember that the Jews have ALWAYS had long hair! The average Jew in Old
and early New Testament times had hair that was an average length of 1 1/2
feet. Women's hair were far longer, usually down toward the knees.. in
Roman society, men wore their hair very short, usually cropped above the
ear, while women wore their hair long but always pinned up in fancy braids
and beads.. The people of Corinth mimicked the Roman culture, however,
those who were Jews kept to the tradition of long hair.. however, an
unusual phenomenon occured: women cut their hair VERY short, especially
those in prostitution circles and cults.. therefore men's hair lengths
would be LONGER than women by cultural standards in that time and would be
a problem in terms of identification.. so that is most likely why Paul
asked for the Corinthian men to cut their hair... I don't believe he asked
for all men to do so else Scripture would contradict itself in 1 Sam 5,
not to mention historical incongruency...
