Noah:

As a newbie to Christian ska, I *really* can't answer that question
adequately except to say that FIF may have an edge because the band uses
trumpet, trombone and sax compared to the Insyderz' trumpet/trombone. And
while I only have "our newest album ever!" from FIF, I like it a *lot* but
have heard some other folks saying they like "Upbeats and Beatdowns"
better. I also only have "Skalleluia!" from the Insyderz, and when I first
played it, I was ROTFLMAO to hear their "skanctified" version of Keith
Green's "Oh Lord, You're Beautiful." Our CHR/AC radio station, WQXL in
Columbia SC, is playing the band's cover of Twila Paris' "We Will Glorify,"
which is kinda more laid back than "He Has Made Me Glad." I am also sure
Rich Mullins is smiling from Heaven regarding the Insyderz' "Awesome God."

Of the three CDs from the "big" bands, I prefer "Supertones Strike Back,"
with a very slight edge for FIF's "our newest album ever!" over
"Skalleluia!", although it was very intriguing and smart for the Insyderz
to "skanctify" great praise songs!

Christ's blessings to you all!

Cheers! Olin Jenkins <jet...@pipeline.com> (Jenkins Typography)

Hi,

I would like to purchase a new Christian Ska CD for my collection. I have both
Supertones CD's and want to know:

Who is better--Insiderz or Five Iron Frenzy?

One of the cool things about Christian Book Stores are their listening
stations. You can demo both bands before buying, and that way you
can pick the one that *you* will like the best.

It's a tough call, but I have to go for Five Iron. I've seen them in
concert twice in Denver, and they put on a good show. They have a lot of
energy on stage, and it just spreads to the crowd. Reece puts out some
great lyrics, too. Funny stuff.

I've seen the Insyderz in concert once in Grand Junction, CO, when they
were touring around with Plankeye and Morallas Forest. Thier show was
good too. I really like their new CD _Skalleluia_. It puts a great twist
on praise songs.

There's no contest...
FIF is better than Insyderz and Supertones.
Reese is a better vocalist. The horn section is better, musically. (Just
give a listen to the musicality on "Second Season")
Don't get upset, all you Supertone and Insyderz freaks.
I'm not trying to trash the other bands...I like them, in fact. I'm just
saying in my humble opinion, FIF is the better of the three.
Hey, you all want a new ska band to jump on? Look out for The Ivy League.
It's "Prep School Ska." These guys rock! They're gonna be touring with The
Halo Friendlies and Brainwash Projects this month, so try to catch that
show. You'll dig it.

I agree, although any band that can put the line "Who's yer daddy?" in a
terrificly fun version of "He Has Made Me Glad" gets my vote. ;-)

Make it easy, and get em all!! *grin*

Well, I don't want to start a war here, but...

Honestly, I like Five Iron's sound better. It's full and rich. And lyrically,
there's some meat there. They take on some social issues (Native Americans,
Divorce) but still have *a lot* of fun. I really like the _Our Newest Album Ever_
cd. There's some musical and lyrical variety. It rocks!

Then again, I have the Insyderz albums too. Skalelluia is pretty good. Basically
they recorded their favorite praise songs, like Rich Mullins's "Awesome God",
Keith Green's "Oh Lord You're Beautiful" and more. It's fun too, but as a whole I
don't like the sound quite as much as 5Fe znc i like 5Fe's lyrics. :)

Hope that helps

steve

i agree but..fif is into the fun and games (but can be serious) as to
insyderz they are a little more serious. as for the supertones..they are the
same ol same ol. i mean everybody listens to them and a majority of their
songs sound the same. i got tired of their 2nd album faster than the first.

Ooh..good call...Any group that can make me listen to "Come on, Eileen"
without thinking of Dexy's Midnight Runners is worth picking up...;p

Not a Christian band, but still tons of fun to listen to. :-)

YUP! They thank the Supertones in their liner...

If you are looking for skacore (ska, with an edge), Squad 5-0 and The Dingees
are very good.
Israelites and Not for the Crowd are also GREAT traditional ska!

I think we have to realize that they each play a different type of ska --
Insyderz is a bit more to the punk side, FIF is a bit more middle of the
road, and Supertones are to the other side of pure punk. (At least, that's
what it seems like to me. . .).

To each his own. I loved the first FIF album (bought it really because of
the name of the band, believe it or not. . .), and the Supertones have some
good moments (I loved "Adonai", for example). I bought the "Skallelujah" CD
really to irritate my wife (SCC, Carman, etc. -- AND she's a Cowboys fan, of
all things!), but it's really grown on me. I like the Insyderz probably the
best of the three, though FIF comes in a close second.

True, True..What I meant is that the music is mostly for fun, and not for
preaching the Gospel, what most people normally think of when they think
Christian music..:) Their music is definitely fun..:)

"The World Is New" is good as well...I like the song about "Spam"....heh
heh..:-)

I like Save Ferris a lot, but are we talking about them being
"Christians in a band" or "a Christian band" or something? I'm not
really a "language prude," but how do you reconcile the "G** D***" in
"Under 21" with that assertion?

Hi there! Just out of curiosity, did you mean that the Supertones are pure
ska? Because they are not even a drop of punk. The Insyderz are not punk
either...what you call the ska beat that is kind of 'punked' up is
skacore...that is where the guitar is more distorted, not the 'pure' ska
upbeats found in roots ska.

Yeah. That's all I have to say. :)

ok...bye bye.

VERY GOOD POINT! AND JUST BECAUSE THEY THANK THE SUPERTONES IN THE LINER
NOTES, AS ONE PERSON POINTED OUT EARLIER, DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE A
"CHRISTIAN BAND." PLENTY OF SECULAR BANDS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH CHRISTIAN
BANDS THROUGH CONCERTS, LOCAL SCENE, ETC. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THAT COULD
BE HOW SAVE FERRIS KNOWS THE SUPERTONES. IS S.F. FROM ORANGE COUNTY OR
SOMEWHERE IN THAT VICINITY? I'M NOT SURE.

WELL, THERE'S MY 2...

You make a very valid point. It is hard to compare them when they play
different styles of ska. I guess you just have to go with what STYLE do you
like best, ya know?
BTW- You actually bought FIF because of their name? That cracks me up! :)
You should pick up the newest. It's really groovy.
And, I enjoyed your comments about your wife. (i.e. listening to music just
to annoy her.) I used to do that to my wife, until she had a "hard-core
conversion." Now she steals all my CDs. (First it was my shirts, now it's
my music...) She even digs stuff like Living Sacrifice and Blindside, when
before she could barely stomach it. My little three year old daughter is a
head banger, too. :) She absolutely adores Third Day, Audio Adrenaline,
Seven Day Jesus, The W's and Morella's Forest. I think she likes Morella's
Forest mostly because she has the same name as the lead vocalist, Sydney.
She's always asking to see "the Sydney video." When she was about 2 1/2
years old, I took her to a Fold Zandura/Seven Day Jesus/Plankeye concert.
She was a little freaked out at first, but then, by the time Seven Day Jesus
came on, she was dancing right along with everybody else. By the time Seven
Day Jesus' new album came out, "Butterfly" was, like, her favorite song.
She knows every word, I think.
Anyway, I've totally gotten off track...
What can I say!?!?

Later,
Cymbeaux

To be honest, I don't own the album. My former roomate at college owned the
album, and I heard a few songs. "Under 21" was not one of them. I was simply
going by what I heard from those few songs.

Sorry if I was misleading in my earlier posts..

I meant that some are Christians, in a band...Not a Christian band, as in
playing gospel-preaching Christian music..I hope that makes sense. :-)
