He plays church dates and stuff around the southeast from time to time.
He was at my church a few months back. He does some versions of old
Motown stuff with new "Christian" lyrics. "Sugar Pie Honey Bun" becomes
"Jesus Christ Son Of God." The hipper among us will of course turn up
their noses and sneer, but it's a lot of fun just the same.

What has happened to the current group? I had heard that Charles
Billingsley had gone solo. (In fact, I saw him perform a solo concert where
they referred to him as being "formerly of Newsong.") Do they have a new
album coming out anytime soon? Does Charles have any solo projects? "People
Get Ready" was an okay album, but it was about ten times better live. Russ
Lee didn't rip his lungs out to the point he can no longer sing or
something, did he?

Charles had a solo career (4 or 5 albums' worth) long before he was
with Newsong. He did a solo gig at my church last year while the band
was home here for a short breather during the main tour for _People
Get Ready_. Guess he just decided to go back to that gig. Newsong
generally pulls a rather grueling tour schedule -- that would be my
first guess for his leaving the group.
I wouldn't panic over personnel changes or long times between albums.
Before _PGR_, they lost half their members and went a good stretch
before releasing _PGR_, then came out massively improved, at least
live (with all due respect to Eddie Middleton and Bobby Apon).

See, I thought when they got away from the original four guys and
turned into some sort of "trying to be young and hip" thing that
they lost their appeal. It was kind of sad seeing the forty-something
members trying to be as young and hip as the twenty-somethings that
they added to the group.

Well, I can see where someone would see it that way. But to watch
Billy Goodwin and Eddie Carswell (esp Eddie) in concert -- at least
the ones that I've seen since the group grew -- it looks more to me
like they're just having a blast. Like the younger guys have kinda
infused some life into them. To me it doesn't look like 40-somethings
trying to be young and hip like 20-somethings. It looks like
40-somethings realizing they don't have to be old farts and having
some fun with the 20-somethings. Inherent in the age difference is
that the 40-somethings probably aren't going to be as hip -- but I
don't think it's due to it being forced.
I'm a "trax are OK, if that's what you need to do" advocate from way
back, so I don't lightly make comments that going with a live band is
a significant improvement. But I think, for these guys, it is.

Well, like I said, it was a guess.
>Charles will be releasing a new album in January.
Looking forward to it.

Now *that* is grueling. (Well, like I said, it was a guess. ;-)
