Back in the early 70's Larry Norman Relased "White light in darkened
corners" A LP that took shots at all the references of Jesus in songs
like
"Spirit in the sky" etc... And now this year's sudden boom in religious
material might make it fun to compile a list of possibilities for a
"White light 2" I'll get things started:

Joan Osborne-One of us
George Michael-Jesus to a child
Depeche Mode-Personal Jesus
If I ever lose my faith-Sting
colored people-DC talk

Let Me know if there are anymore ? I think PM Dawn has some song that
mentions Jesus ? let's get on a role ! Could the 2nd Jesus Movemnet be
far behind ? Blessings,
Kevin

Would you include band names, like Liquid Jesus, Jesus Jones, MC 900 Ft
Jesus, etc.? In some cases the name might have nothing to do with the
Jesus of Christianity -- e.g., Jesus Jones got its name from the two most
common names in the Hispanic community, or something like that.

dc talk stands for "decent Christian talk", just fyi.
and they've been on frontline label (a "christian label") since
about 1989 or '90.

anyway,
"Nappy Heads Remix" -- the fugees ("and the angels write raps on holy
paper, i said "i'm lookin' for Jesus,
he said "take the escalator")

"???" on pete rock & cl smooth's "the main ingredient" (2 songs)
a) "...i'm nice, as Christ is to religion..."
b) "'cos i love my shorties like Jesus loves children"

this is mad old, but stevie mentiones him a lot..in particular the
song "Jesus children of america"

references to Jesus wouldn't necessarily mean "white light", since i've
heard jesus mentioned in a many song in a negative way.

ok, what rock have you been living under? if you even remotely think that
dc talk is secular, then you probably still use a flashlight to get to the
bathroom in the middle of the night.

have you even heard the song, or any of dct's others? and you *still* say that?

btw, try FOREFRONT record label, not frontline. it's also the label of
bands like Audio Adrenaline, Code of Ethics, Rebecca St. James, etc...

Toby, the unofficial leader of the band (dc talk), is also one of the
founding members/owners of Gotee records, another christian records
label...

This song doesn't mention Jesus. Does elude to his losing faith in the
church, though.

Does it count that they're a Christian band?

Last I read, Sting was saying that humanity needed to "grow out" of
Christianity because it taught that man held dominion over nature. I think
he has a Jesuit upbringing, but unless he's changed recently, I don't
imagine he'd have much nice to say about Our Lord.

I can't believe we missed the obvious:

Doobie Brothers - "Jesus is just Alright with me"
Counting Crows- "Round Here"
Hooters- "All you Zombies" (Do Noah and Moses count?)
Don McLean- "American Pie" (I think)
Metallica- "Four Horseman" (Not Jesus, but Revelation)

I think a Nine Inch Nails song has Jesus in it,
but I can't stand to listen to them to find out.

If you asked for a secular song that talked about God,
or had something to do about religion,
I think the Internet would not be large enough to hold the post!

Sounds like Sting (or as I affectionately call him... Gordon). If you
really read the lyrics to his songs... there is a definite religious
aspect to them... however, much like Madonna, it is necessarily
positive. Still... you can't beat Sting (or rather... the Police) for
good old-fashioned rock and roll. I was listening to the radio the other
day, and the announcer said that while most of the groups of the 80's
sucked (his words... not mine), he would pay good money to see the Police
get back together. Here's to hoping.

Hey, what about Robbie Robertson's `Christmas Must Be Tonight' from the
`Scrooged' soundtrack? It's almost scarily Christian -- it was even
covered on some various-artists live-concert album a few years back (I
can't remember who sang it, but Phil Keaggy was somewhere on that
album). I'm not sure if it mentions Jesus by name, but there's no
mistaking who it's about.

I wouldn't know, but in marketing terms, he's hardly CCM. Definitely
secular.

That would be Randy Stonehill's version on the Compassion All Star Band
*1 by 1 Live* cd. The band features Randy Stonehill, Mike Mead, Rick
Cua, John Andrew Schreiner, Margaret Becker, Phil Keaggy, and Joe
English. I nearly ran off the road a few years back when the now defunt
local "triple a" station played *this* version and not the RObbie
Robertson one.

Great song.

If you listen to ALL of the words to that song, it's
really bizarre, and not in a very good way. I can't

One theory I've heard (and pretty much agree with) is that the song is about
vampires. "Make up your mind, decide to walk with me..." "Behind the
boathouse I'll show you my dark secret," "I promise you will stay as
beautiful with dark hair and soft skin forever," "Do you want to die?" Sound
believable to anyone else?

There are a ton of country songs that mention Jesus, and a lot that are
basically Christian songs. My favorite is "What If Jesus Comes Back Like
That" by Colin Raye.

Wow. No offense, but in my opinion, you're reaching. If you have doubts
about Chris Cornell's "spirituality" (or lack thereof), read the lyrics
to _Your Savior_, from Temple of the Dog. Small excerpt:

People like you, I know myself
Walk in the shoes of somebody else
Whisper to me, my tragic fate
Whisper to me, my tragic end
But don't give me your savior

Anyway, I love the CD, don't get me wrong. I just doubt that Cornell's
much of a believer. Just my .00000000000000000000001.
