Louie Weaver speaks out, says he was fired
This weekend Louie Weaver released a statement about his separation from
Petra. The statement is available on his website louieweaver.com. Here are
four of the most important details:
Louie did not leave the band. He was fired on Feb. 8.
He was fired by lead singer John Schlitt and manager Wayne Seboa.
The firing was unexpected. Louie said he was "shocked" and "surprised."
Louie is continuing on in ministry and has started a new musical project.
Where things stand
The recent news about changes in Petra has been confusing. Essentially,
here's where things stand right now:
Three members of the band are gone
Louie Weaver (fired)
Quinton Gibson (joined another band)
Bryce Bell (touring with Rebecca St. James)
Bob Hartman is back on tour again, replacing Quinton
The band is continuing work on their new album, which comes out in August.

Twenty-two year veteran time keeper of the Christian rock band Petra, Louie
Weaver, is announcing today that he was dismissed from service to the band
on February 8th, 2003.
Weaver, the person to have performed with this group for the most number of
years consecutively, says he was "shocked" and "surprised" that such a
decision was made by current band leader John Schlitt and Schlitt's personal
manager, Wayne Seboa.
Weaver says, "Although I am saddened by this decision, I know the Lord is
already opening doors that I had never dreamed of." Louie sites 2nd Timothy
chapter 2 verse 15: "Do your best to present yourself to God as one
approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly
handles the word of truth." He (Weaver) continues, "For a long time I've
felt God has given me a vision for ministry, especially ministry in music
and praise to Him. Petra was part of my life for 22 years. It was a
wonderful blessing to me and my family, but sometimes the Lord brings
circumstances into your life where choices will be made for you, so you go
forward with a new calling that He brings into your life."
Louie also states that he is standing on the Apostle Paul's words to Timothy
in 2nd Timothy chapter 4 verse 5: "But you, keep your head in all
situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the
duties of your ministry."
"Ministries change within the years of service," Weaver says, "and I feel I'
ve now been given the opportunity to go forward in a new direction. Penny
and I truly wish John and the other members of his band success and joy in
all they endeavor to do and want them to know that their ministry has and
will continue to be in our prayers."
Acknowledging his love for Jesus Christ and his heartfelt belief that the
Lord continues to call him to a music ministry, Louie says, "The Lord has
always been in control of our lives and He is the one who directs and guides
our steps. I am excited to see what the Lord is going to do as we walk in
obedience to Him." Weaver continues, "I thank God for all He has given me
and am happy to let you know that we will be continuing on in ministry for
Him. That ministry, governed by a Christ-centered board of men and women,
will be called "Louie Weaver Ministries International." This musical
entourage is already hard at work writing and preparing to record new
material for praise and worship to Christ our Lord. The first project is
tentatively called "Louie Weaver and Friends."
Louie goes on, "I just wanted everyone to know that I firmly believe in our
music ministry and that our Lord has continued to call me to that ministry.
We ask for your prayers for wisdom as we move forward."

It's hard to know what to make of this without hearing more from the various
parties, but it is very sad. As someone who grew up listening to Petra in
my formative years, I always remember Louie (already balding in the mid-80s)
banging the skins.
I kinda lost contact with Petra's music after "On Fire", but even after
three albums with Schlitt as the lead singer, he still seemed like an
outsider. When I think Petra, I think Volz. I guess it's kinda like Van
Halen with Diamond Dave vs. Red Rocker or AC/DC Bon vs. Brian.

Heck, there's even a song about him (sort of) on the Petra tribute album!
