I'm trying to find examples of music that does not have the traditional
drums and bass rhythm as a foundation. I'd like to make my own CD, using a
combination of midi and live instruments. Rhythm would be provided by
piano, acoustic guitar, or strings. But I need examples of songs. Ideally,
I'd like names of groups that lean away from the traditional, driving beat
of drums and bass. But specific songs would also serve me well in giving
ideas. Examples of songs include:

King Of Who I Am, The - Lulu Roman/Russ Taff - excellent use of cello and
other strings
You Can Close Your Eyes - Kim Hill/Brown Bannister - just a casual acoustic
guitar (on the sample I heard)
People Need the Lord - Steve Green - can't remember, seems like that had
strings and maybe an oboe.
Let Freedom Ring - Larnelle Harris - full orchestra would be nice.

I have some old Maranatha tapes. I'm going to listen to them and see what
they have that might be close to what I'm looking for.

On the secular side, I only know the oldies. Seems like the Beatles had a
couple tunes in this category. But I'll need help identifying them. "Long
and Winding Road"?? Believe it or not, a good example is from the Monkees .
. . "I wanna be free" - starts out with picking an acoustic guitar, then a
sting section comes in featuring a cello. I suppose Simon and Garfunkel
would have some tunes like this. Anyone know any titles other than "Bridge
over Troubled Waters"? Seems like (anyone remember) Donovan had some music
like this. At least his use of percussion was a little different. I think
I'd like his "Jennifer/Juniper" model.

Also, some of you may know of some indies that have a lot of this kind of
music. I'm also looking for songs, OR, some who would contract for the use
of the tunes (perhaps tunes only) to their songs. Or, if they've already
recorded their songs, I may want to purchase a license for use of their
accompaniment tracks. Another option is using tunes that were recorded with
drums and bass, but that could easily have those tracks replaced with a
piano or acoustic guitar. This assumes there are other instruments already
there.

Not sure if this fits into your mold or not, but some darkwave bands like
Black Tape for a Blue Girl have melodies that rarely use drums at all, and
bass sparingly, more with keys and strings and such. They tend to be more
atmospheric and almost neo-classical than the examples you gave, but it's a
thought.

Ronny Martin aka Joy Electric...the last couple albums have used
only analog synths.

Definitely not what you're looking for, but...

Bradford,
There are a few artists in the Christian realm that come to mind, but not
specific songs right now.To note would be :
Sixpence None The Richer
Bob Bennett (The Garden Song, Psalm 149)
Iona
Paul Smith (of the Imperials fame, music contains drums, but it may be the style
your looking for, try his debut "Live And Learn")
77s (Mike Roe has done an excellent tune called "Jesus" that would fit this
catagory"
Lost Dogs (may be a tune or two on Scenic Routes)
Adam Again ("Who Can Hold Us", excellent in every way, with orchestra!)
Jars Of Clay (Didn't they have full orchestra backing some tunes on their
debut?)

Just a few I can think of off the top, I'm sure they can serve to inspire
other thoughts around here (c:

Hi,
I have a couple of songs on my site you might want to check out.  First is called "Bad Girl" (It is a Christian song) that goes the traditional Beatles route of using strings as bass with no drums.  Second is "Thief, which uses a loop of an industral sound for both the bass and drum role but with very different results.  They are both free mp3's.
                                                                                             Thanks,

Bradford,
Another artist that comes to mind is Randy Stonehill. Check out his songs on
his best of compliation called "Our Recollections". Particularly the songs
"Turning Thirty"and "Coming Back Soon" He also has a song called "When I Look
To The Mountains" on his Celebrate This Heartbeat release that has a full
orchastra behind it, some beat is in ther though. Fantasic praise song by the
way! Another song he has that comes to mind is "Letters To My Family". Check
some of his music out.

Thanks to you and John for your suggestions. Perhaps I'll just buy
Stonehill's "Our Recollections". Another genre that falls into the category
that I'm looking for is the Hymns series from Discovery House Music. That's
all choral, and I'm not limiting my search to choral, but it's really good
for what I'm looking for. I found a tape where my brother recorded a tape
full of songs from a local Christian radio station. I have no idea about
song titles or authors. One is probably titled, "Just because You are" . .
. (forever I will praise You, etc.). This one has bass and drums, but
somehow still seems to fit. Message of the song is first and foremost.
Anybody know who sings it? Another is a medley from someone (anybody know
who??) the words include "Holy Lord, most Holy Lord, You alone are worthy of
my praise", then the song continues into a different melody "O precious
Lord, great is Thy name, great is Thy name . . . "

Just one more . . .
