1.2 The Early Years
------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Taylor was born in south eastern California. Shortly after his
birth, the Taylors moved to Denver, Colorado where Steve grew up. In
1976, Steve graduated from high school and moved to southern
California to attend Biola University. After his freshman year he
moved back to Colorado to attend the University of Colorado at
Boulder. Enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program in music, it became
apparent quite soon that a vocal emphasis was required as he couldn't
do anything else, not even play the piano to save his life. It has
also been said that the university only let Steve graduate so they
wouldn't have to listen to him sing again.

After his third year in college in 1979, Steve auditioned for John
Davidson's Summer Camp. Steve was one of 100 chosen from 20,000
hopefuls to spend a month learning the showroom trades from the likes
of Tony Orlando, Florence Henderson and John Davidson.

Steve wanted to do something with his Christian faith but he had a
stumbling block for music that meant anything to him. During the fall
of 1979, he was enrolled in a film making course at Colorado U.
Someone in the class used "Lost In The Supermarket" by The Clash as
the soundtrack for a film. Steve picked up the whole album "London
Calling".

Musically it saved my life. It had raw passion, it
has lyrics that were slap across the face, it had
everything but hope. The Clash saw the problems of
the world with startling clarity. They just weren't
offering much in the way of solutions. To sum it up,
I'd found my mission. - Steve Taylor

The demos for "I Want to be a Clone" and "Whatcha Gonna Do When You
Number's Up?" were recorded during his last year of college. Then
Steve had various meetings with California labels and publishers about
getting a recording deal. These were unsuccessful.

He met Jim Chaffee in California, who was enthused with the demo.
Before he helped Steve get a deal, he enlisted Taylor to be assistant
director of "The Continentals", an evangelistic singing group that was
about to head for Poland. Not long after, Chaffee helped get Steve a
gig as director of Chuck Bolte's Jeremiah People, a Christian musical
comedy troupe whose satire strongly influence Steve as a child.

In 1982, Steve got a small slot at Cam Floria's Annual Christian
Artists Conference in Estes Park, Colorado with the help of Chaffee
and his wife Janice. It was Steve's first live set. The crowd's
reaction impressed Sparrow President Billy Ray Hearn so much that he
was literally waiting for Steve when he got off the stage. The deal
quickly followed.

------------------------------------------------------------
1.2 Mrs. Taylor???
------------------------------------------------------------

The June 1984 issue of CCM had Steve Taylor as cover story. Steve was
interviewed by roving CCM reporter Steve Taylor (one of those other
Clones I was talking about). In the interview Steve was asked about
his marital status.

CCM: One last question, Steve. Are you single?
ST: Getting a little personal, aren't you?
CCM: The public has a right to know.
ST: Yes, I'm single.
CCM: Any plans on marrying in the future?
ST: I'm waiting for a girl who's warm, loving, and owns a
Greyhound tour bus.

A few months after the interview, a month after that issue of CCM came
out, Steve played at Cornerstone Music Festival for the first time.
Early in his performance, he jumped off the stage and broke his ankle.
Steve limped through the rest of the concert and afterwards went to
the local hospital for surgery the following morning. This accident
caused Steve to cancel his trip to Ireland where he planned on
devoting a few months to his next project. (The next project was On
The Fritz.)

While back home in L.A. he met Debbie. Nine months later they were
married. No exact date seems to be available but as Cornerstone is
usually either the last week in June or the first week in July, nine
months later puts the earliest date for the wedding at the end of
March 1985. This is when recording for On The Fritz was completed.
At concerts in May 1985, he mentioned that he was married so it was at
the end of March or sometime in April that Steve and Debbie got
married.

Debbie Taylor is a successful painter. Her works include the cover to
The Best We Could Find and the controversial cover to I Predict 1990
("It wasn't a tarot card" - Steve).

Now, does Debbie own that Greyhound tour bus ???

------------------------------------------------------------
1.3 Retirement from Christian Music
------------------------------------------------------------

I Predict 1990 quickly became the most controversial album in Steve's
often misunderstood career. This misunderstanding came mainly as a
result of the satirical nature of his songs.

I Blew Up The Clinic Real Good is a prime example of how Steve has
been misunderstood. People on both sides of the abortion debate were
against bombing abortion clinics. So was (and is) Steve. The
unfortunate thing about this whole situation was that they missed
"the flashing neon lyric in the middle of the song that says, 'The end
don't justify the means anytime.' What better example to use than a
clinic bomber." - Steve

The controversy didn't seem to bother Steve until he found himself
defending the songs in interviews. That combined with the fact that
the record didn't succeed to his expectations brought Steve to the
decision to move on. This resulted in Steve Taylor retiring from
Christian music.

------------------------------------------------------------
1.4 Chagall Guevara
------------------------------------------------------------

Then came Chagall Guevara. Chagall Guevara was a band comprising of
Steve Taylor, Dave Perkins (co-producer of I Predict 1990), Lynn
Nichols (VP of Myrrh, label I Predict released on), Mike Mead and Wade
Jaynes. They recorded on MCA Records.

The self-titled Chagall Guevara release got strong reviews. Rolling
Stone compared Chagall Guevara to The Clash. In a 1994 interview,
Steve said that Rolling Stone's comparison was "one of my life's
highlights."

The band did little touring and the album failed to live up to
commercial expectations. Also, at this time MCA went through a
restructuring and many of the people Chagall Guevara worked with were
no longer with MCA. About recording on MCA, Steve said, "seemed like
a good idea at the time, til we found out that it stood for Musician's
Cemetery of America." These basically brought the band to an end.
They did however record some stuff that hasn't been released. "We
were thinking of doing a box set shaped like a coffin but I dunno if
we'll do that or not" - Steve.

------------------------------------------------------------
1.5 The Return to the Christian Music Industry
------------------------------------------------------------

Steve then turned to production, producing the Newsboys' Not Ashamed
album. He eventually started to consider a return to make a solo
record. He had friends who convinced him to record another solo
album. Squint was the result being released in the fall of 1993 with
3/5 of Chagall Guevara playing prominent roles (Wade Jaynes on bass,
Mike Mead on drums and don't forget you-know-who).

"My biggest concern with this song [Am I In Sync?] was whether the
joke of an out-of-sync sequencer would wear well with repeated
listenings." - Steve. As a part of the joke, the song includes the
words between Steve and the sequencer man, Woody. The following is
the lyrics to Am I In Sync? with the conversation included in square
brackets.

Am I In Sync
written by Steve Taylor

[ S: I don't know Woody.
Are you sure you've got this think hooked up right?
W: Listen man, music is my life.
S: Alright. Two, three, four
Hey! What are you doing? What's goin' on?
W: Sorry. ]

Synthestzer rock ruled Jessica's feet
As a slave the that ubiquitous beat
Visions of the big screen danced in her head
'In a matter of time' she said
Jessie never got her Holleywood role
And the pogo nights have taken there toll
She can do the monkey off o' the cuff
But her mind had a missing link . . .

CHORUS

Am I In Sync?
Paint a picture on a subway train
Carve my name in a video game
Out looking for the camara crews
Sell my soul for a second on the evening news
Live 'til the bubble pops
Hold my breath when the big one drops
Immortality is what I'm buying
But I'd rather be immortal by not dying.

Laboratory rats made Roger a fink
And the laws of science drove him to drink
Working for the taste of public acclaim
And a cure that bore his name
Nobel prizes would have been nice
But he lost his mind to renegade mice
Roger traded 'Man of the Year'
For an understanding shrink . . .

CHORUS

[ S: Alright. Let's try it again.
Woody, what are you doin'?
You told me you knew how to use this thing.
W: Sorry. ]

CHORUS

[ S: Alright. Get it right this time. Three, four.
Yeah now that wasn't so hard was it?
Woody, what's goin' on?
W: Sorry.
It's this machine.
You can fix it in the mix.
Listen, I kinda like it.
Have you ever heard of, uh, poly-rhythms?
I hear Bowie's gonna do this on his next album.
S: What a relief? ]

Shark Sandwich - archival selections taken from: I Want To Be A Clone,
Guilty By Association, Good Girl, Whatcha Gonna Do When Your Number's
Up?, What Ever Happened To Sin.

The first run of this album had a few graphical errors as Steve
explains:
Yes, the "Now The Truth..." booklet is being
reprinted, but only for one reason: During film
output certain type overlapped, particularly when
using the letter "F" followed by certain other
letters (example: in "A Principled Man" the lyrics
"under a flag" become "under a fag," etc.)
Additionally, the inside front and back cover
pages were inadvertently left blank. Neither
problem was discovered by Sparrow's art department
until it was too late. I begged Sparrow for a
reprint, but they told me to actually recall the
entire first shipment would be far too costly.
They did, however, graciously agree to reprint
future shipments, and to replace any books that
were defective. If any of you have trouble getting
yours replaced, send me an SASE (as a last resort,
perhaps? otherwise I may have to cut down my
online hours...): ST, PO Box 150669, Nashville, TN
37215. I'll do my best, although promptness is not
one of my strong suits these days.

Steve also says that they will try to have a quantity of booklets
available at summer festival appearances for trade-in. These
appearances are scheduled to include the two largest, Creation and
Cornerstone.

2.10 Liver
------------------------------------------------------------

Recorded live in Lancaster, PA on October 22, 1995

Originally planned as a Live-EP, this album has been bumped up to a 10
song live album. There was debate as to whether the title was
pronounced "live-er" or the same way that internal organ is
pronounced.

"Therein lies the beauty of the title, don't you agree?" - Steve

Since it's release, it has been made known that the pronunciation is
"live-er". I guess this means the video companion will not be called
"Onions".

Songs
- Jim Morrison's Grave
- The Lament of Desmond R. G. Underwood-Fredrick IV
- I Want To Be A Clone
- Escher's World
- On the Fritz
- Bannerman
- Hero
- Jesus Is For Losers
- The Finish Line
- Violent Blue

This album features Steve's cover of Dighayzoose's cover of I Want To
Be a Clone (leave it to Steve to cover a cover of himself) from his
recent tour.

3.1 Meltdown/Mystery
------------------------------------------------------------

Released in 1984 as VCV 4583 by Sparrow

A Sparrow Double Play
MELTDOWN featuring Steve Taylor / MYSTERY featuring Sheila Walsh

MELTDOWN (4:41) from "Meltdown"

Executive Producer: Billy Ray Hearn
Produced by Steve Taylor
Directed by Steve Taylor and Michael Brown
Cinematographer: Michael Brown
Editing: Millie Paul
Special Effects: Ken Horn

Synopsis: Steve plays the janitor in the wax museum. At the
beginning of the video before the song starts Lisa Whelchel is seated
at an anchor desk where she announces a "news bulletin" about the
incident, which then segues into the song. (Whelchel also appears
briefly in the video later, still at the desk but lip-synching to the
song.) Lots of close-ups of melting wax figures and Steve looking
silly.

MYSTERY (3:34) from "War of Love"

Executive Producer: Billy Ray Hearn
Produced by Terry Sheppard
Directed by Skip Konte
Editing: Doug Dowdle

Synopsis: Sheila gazing into a mirror and out a window and glancing
around the room as she gets ready for bed.

3.2 Video Works

Released in 1986 as a companion to Limelight - The Film.

Songs
- I Want To Be a Clone (as appeared on Limelight)
- Meltdown
- On The Fritz (as appeared on Limelight)

Lifeboat included an extended begining with such great lines as "I
agreed to where this bozo outfit for the album cover, but I'm not
going to go out there dressed like some school ma'rm. I don't have
the legs for this."

The project also includes some-what different interview clips between
songs than in the film and a neat commercial at the end for
"Limelight--The Film". After a while, "Limelight--The Film" was also
released on VHS, and Sparrow probably saw Video Works as some-what
redundant, making it harder to come by in subsequent years.

"The shoot heard 'round the world! 10 countries! 57 locations!
32,000 miles! 7 painful vaccinations!

On July 27, 1993 Steve Taylor and a small film crew set out on one of
the most ambitious film shoots ever undertaken by a rock artist.
Defying skeptics, sleep patterns, and occasionally gravity, Taylor
directed and starred in five music videos from his highly-acclaimed
new album _Squint_. He caused traffic jams in the streets of Hanoi,
Vietnam; he dangled off suspension bridges in the Himalayas; he
dodged angry camels on the plains of Cappadocia, Turkey; and the
entore advanture was captured in dazzling 35mm big-screen color.

Tragically, Steve never made it back alive.* But the video you're
about to see serves as both a fitting tribute and a touching memorial
to this visonary recording artist and filmmaker.

Featuring:
- Smug
- Opening Credits ('The Moshing Floor')
- Jesus Is For Losers
- Bannerman
- Sock Heaven
- Cash Cow (a rock opera in three small acts)
- The Finish Line

* O.K., he did actually make it back alive, but he was really tired
when he got home.

4.5 Soundtrack to "Pump Up The Volume"
------------------------------------------------------------

Soundtrack to the movie "Pump Up The Volume" starring Christian Slater
as high school aged pirate radio DJ, "Hard Harry".

DISCLAIMER: This movie is rated R, contains a bit of skin and some
sexually explicit material. Be forewarned before viewing
the film.

Tale o' the Twister appeared in the movie from time index 31:43 to
32:20. It appears as if the school allowed students to listen to the
radio on boom-boxes during lunch break out doors and that this song
was playing at the time. The song ends when a student slips in a tape
of "Hard Harry" from the previous night. The lyrics from Tale o' the
Twister that appeared in the movie (there was a bit before and a bit
after this which I couldn't decifer) were:

She has the eyes of Lassie
And the lips of Nixon
Lips like Tricia Nixon
I stole a sideways glance at a continental shelf
Never knew she was the Devil himself.

Released in 1990 on MCA Records

5.1 Dreamer: What Really Happened to Joseph
------------------------------------------------------------

Released in 1983 by Christian Artists
Distributed by Sparrow

A youth musical written by Steve Taylor and Cam Floria

There is a real hilarious song that is a send-up of his (Joseph's)
employer's (Potiphar's, sp?) wife, called Mae-East, and of course the
vocals are done in an Mae-West fashion. ("Don't look at me I only work
here, but he don't work here anymore")

------------------------------------------------------------
5.2 The CAUSE - Do Something Now
------------------------------------------------------------

Released in mid-80's on Sparrow??

"Do Something Now" was the song.

The entirety of Steve's solo vocals goes something like:
If we really care
we'll do something
we gotta do something.

6.0 I Predict A Clone - Steve Taylor Tribute Album
============================================================

Released in Spring 1994 as REX 41004-2

"I can't think of a less deserving subject" - Steve

A first in Christian music, this album is a pre-mortem tribute album.
Prior to I Predict a Clone, all tribute albums in Christian music had
been post-mortem tributes (ie the artist was dead, like in the case of
Keith Green and Mark Heard).

All artist and composer royalties generated from the purchase of this
recording are donated to JPUSA's (Jesus People USA) Cornerstone
Community Outreach. For more info on this and other JPUSA ministries
call 312/989-6317.

Like all tribute albums in Christian music before it, Steve Taylor had
no part in in the production of the album except that he specified who
the artist and composer royalties should be donated to (and of course
wrote the songs.)

Steve's Version | Bride's Version
|
Down Carolina way | He was born in Babylon
Lived a man named O' Big BJ | Cross is burnin' on the lawn
BJ went and got a school | Got his name on Hoover's list
Founded on Caucasian rule | Boistoid (?) light of closed fist
Bumper sticker on his Ford | Sunken eyes, beam like bone
Say's 'Honkies if you love the Lord' | Broke his spirit, heart of stone
|
CHORUS | CHORUS
We don't need no colour code | We don't need no Cholour Chode
We don't need no colour code | We don't need no Cholour Chode
Take your rules and hit the road | Bring down the walls of Jericho
We don't need no colour code | We don't need no Cholour Chode
Judgement day is goin' down |
Better burn your cap and gown |
|
White man speak with forked tongue | White man speak with forked tongue
White supremists eat their young | White supremists eat their young
Bigotry is on the loose | Bigotry is on the loose
Ignorance is no excuse | Ignorance is no excuse
I know Jesus loves that man | Fold (?) and pray for the schools
Even with a Greenville tan | Founded on Caucasian rule
|
CHORUS | CHORUS
|
Marching to Pretoria | Marching to Pretoria
Colour codes in churches, huh? | Colour code she's rollin' blood
Following a facist creed | Following a facist creed
Whose translation do you read? | Politics the devil's seed
True believers won't be snowed | Electric churches of delight
We don't need no colour code. | Stain glassed souls redeem the night

8.0 Other Steve Taylors - Phoney Clones
============================================================

------------------------------------------------------------
8.1 DeGarmo & Key - The Pledge
------------------------------------------------------------

Released in 1989

This album listed in the liner notes a Steve Taylor as contributing to
the album as follows,

BGV's
- Complete Album

Guitars w/ Dana Key
- If God Is For Us (Who Can Be Against Us)

If you dig out your copy of "The Pledge" and look in the insert, you
will find a picture of the DeGarmo and Key Band. The tall fellow with
the long dark hair is named 'Steve Taylor'. This Steve Taylor was
with DeGarmo and Key for their ledgendary "Rock Solid" tour and stayed
with the group for a few years as a second guitar player. The name
has caused some confusion. Another interesting side note is that this
guitar-playing Steve Taylor's wife was named Elizabeth, but she isn't
"that" Elizabeth Taylor any more than her husband is "that" Steve
Taylor. There is no evidence of any of the Clones performing with
DeGarmo & Key.

andrew, you do a wonderful job with the QRSTUV, but for steve's name to be
listed below the rest of our names on the list of contributors (ESPECIALLY
mine, 'cause i don't even remember what i contributed to the fray!) is a
flagrant injustice and it should be corrected NOW.
