"Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones...
I don't want to start a "holier than thou" flame war....
But our store is not going to carry this CD...
I don't think Mick & Keith were glorifying God when
they wrote this one...(or ANY of their songs...)
Is this some kind of marketing move....
Cover the Stones.....pull in the kids??
Just wondering.
I don't think "kids" are very impressed by the grandfatherly Stones
anymore. The 35-50 year olds are more likely to appreciate an old
Stones cover. Perhaps Cleveland just happens to like the song. Her
voice is well-suited for a Stones-type song.

The song was taken from the TNN special promoting that album, but Ashley's
version was not on that record. She was appearing on the special as a
backing vocalist, and when one of the headline artists was a no-show, the
producer asked her if she would fill in. She said she would, if she could
pick the song she sang, and that's the one she picked. FYI, even though she
liked the song, she didn't know it. She said she and Kenny had to buy a CD
and learn it the afternoon of the taping...
At any rate, the presence of that song is a stupid reason not to carry a
brilliant CD...

I did a web search on the song title and came up with this page for the
lyrics to the song.

I'm not certain if Ashley sings it exactly to the original lyrics.
Hope this is helpful.

i fail to see the relevance... do you think that the contractor who
built your store was glorifying God when he built it?

I've heard her version on a cassette sampler her record company was
giving away at Cornerstone. It may not be word for word, but it's
close (I don't recall the "It's just a kiss away" at the end, though).

Many of the older hymns, that we sing now and are referenced to speak
against all *new* music, were melodies taken right out of the taverns
and transformed into "spiritual songs" to reach out to the masses. I
believe that is the meaning of the verse from Col. 3:16:
"...and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God."
I don't know what the Stones were thinking about when they wrote the
song...nor do I know what Ashley Cleveland has done with it...I can only
hope she has done it with a grateful heart to God and when I hear,
hopefully it will be clear.

I realize you have a business to run and a somewhat difficult clientele to
keep happy but this seems like a strange, sad decision to me.
The way I understand it is that the God we're talking about here is "in the
business" of taking things that are broken, things that are specifically NOT
glorifying to him (take me, for instance) and fashioning from them something
good and holy. That is the heart of what he's about. That, in a word, is
redemption.
If Ashley is taking a Stones' song and presenting it in a way that infuses
it with light and truth, is she not following in the very steps of the one
who came to bring about transformation, who came to use the foolish, broken
things of the world to confound the wise? I couldn't mean it more when I
say that THIS is what it's about, this endeavor we call CCM. (It's
unfortunate, by the way, but it seems that we Christians often end up being
the confounded "wise" ones a good bit of the time. God is not always so
easy to pin down. As Lewis said, he's not a tame lion.)
For my part, I know both from personal experience and from the words of many
friends that Ashley's music has brought them hope and light in the darkness.
I have yet to hear her version of "Gimme Shelter", but I expect only the
best.
As for your bottom line, I know I'll be in line somewhere with my $15 on the
day it comes out.

Is Ashley singing anything lyrically objectionable to believers in her
rendition of "Gimme Shelter?" Not that I've heard.

Excuse me, but have you actually *listened* to the song, and the album???
It doesn't include *any* material that could even remotely be considered
as a "marketing move" calculated to appeal to kids, let alone a cover of a
30 year old Stones tune.
Ashley told me that the cover of the song came about when her husband,
Kenny Greenberg, and her bassist were performing in a house band for the
taping of a TNN t.v. special that featured Stones songs covered by country
artists (STONE COUNTRY: A TRIBUTE TO THE ROLLING STONES). The producers of
the show called her and asked her if she would come to the taping -- she
thought they wanted her to sing BGVs in the house band. When she got
there, they handed her the CD and told her to select a song that had not
been covered -- an artist who was scheduled to appear didn't show up, and
the producers were familiar with Ashley's music and decided to offer her
the slot. She loved a version of the tune that was performed by, IIRC,
Mary Wilson, so she decided to do it. So, although Ashley doesn't appear
on the STONE COUNTRY album, she wound up with a featured segment on the
t.v. show -- and the producers have given her permission to use her
segment of the t.v. special as a video to accompany her new album.
As for the rest of the new album: The disc is entitled YOU ARE THERE and
will be released on September 22nd. The live cuts with the band are from
Ashley's opening slot on several dates of Amy Grant's House of Love tour,
and the remaining tunes are new cuts which simply feature Ashley and her
guitar.

I'll second that. This is the same God, who talks our language and meets us
where we are. Look at the life of Jesus; There are numberous times when he
related his messages to culturally significant things. He taught people through
what they knew. So what's wrong with a believer singing this song. It's not like
Christians haven't covered "secular" songs before. Sure we need to be
discerning, but what is Ashley's heart? If it is glorifying God with her musical
ability, so be it :)

She isn't the first Christian Artisit to do a cover of the song you
know. Holy Soldier did it back in 1992 on their "Last Train" album.
And in my opinion it is better than not only Ashley's version, but the
original. But then again that might not be saying much, because I
never really liked the original.
CDS from Archbold
well, neither was the poet Paul quoted on Mars Hill, nor the
sun-worshippers the psalmist took a song from and used it to glorify God.

No, but Ashley was on the television special that aired on TNN. Please see
my previous post.

God doesn't deal with everyone in the same way. God has dealt with me in
the area of Xtian music, too. That's why I hardly listen to it anymore.
For the most part (there are exceptions), it's trite, formulaic, at times
theologically suspect, and hyped in ways that make me nauseous.
> And because a Christian band covers it,

Well, this begs the question, "Do know the hearts of all of the writers of
all of the songs that you listen to?" (And FWIW, yeah, I think that
Christian covers can change the intent of a song.)

Whatever. Sounds like you're just knee deep in different "junk" to me.

Here are the lyrics that Ashley sings:
Oh, a storm is threatening
My very life today.
If I don't get some shelter
I'm going to fade away.
Oh, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.
Oh, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.
See the fire that's sweeping
Our very streets today.
Burn like a red coal carpet
Mad bull that lost his way.
Oh, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.
Oh, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.
There's a storm that's threatening
My very life today.
Gimme, gimme shelter
Before I fade away.
Oh, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.
Oh, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away.

Thas' Nuthin... :-) What's everyone complaining about? If I didn't know
any better I'd say that the lyrics could be construed as religious if you
wanted them to.
Now if we could just convince people that it's OK to listen to things
besides praise music and formulaic tripe like Wilson Phil umm I mean Point
of Grace.
Brian the MInnesotan
> a shot of smack?
You ought to be smacked. :^)
The original line in the song is, "War, it's just a shot away."
>"Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones...
>I don't want to start a "holier than thou" flame war....
>But our store is not going to carry this CD...

Others have already covered this ground quite well, so I'll just chime in
my agreement-I think it's really, really silly that you have enough of
a problem with the song that you'll not carry the album. I daresay that
this kind of simple-minded "if it's written by a Christian, it must be good/
if it's not written by a Christian, it can't be good" mentality that's
in large part responsible for the creative sinkhole that is mainstream CCM
today.
So the song was written by Mick Jagger (or whoever). Does that automatically
make it "evil," even if the words are "neutral" or could even be construed
as "good"? If you didn't know it was a Stones song and heard it, would you
have the same reaction to it? If not, then I think you've got things more
than a little mixed up. And where do you draw the line? What if a song
was cowritten by an unsaved person? Or what if unsaved people played
on the album? Or an unsaved producer? You're gonna be running out of
CDs to stock pretty soon.
(I'll also mention that covering a Stones song to "pull in the kids"
probably hasn't been a positive marketing move in about 20 years.)

Those are some prettly bluntly stated opinions, sir. Flatly expressed
opinions draw bluntly expressed opinions in return.
Your decision to ban the album on the basis of a cover of a Rolling Stone
song [an allusion i couldnt resist, sorry] is a poor one.
i haven't heard the song in question yet. Ashley Cleveland beats MicK
Jagger hands down as a singer (vocal quality, understandability, soul).
i strongly suspect that her version of the song will profusely rock my
face.
