Hello,, brothers and sisters. I'm Net board shopping today, and this is my
first time on this one. I hope this isn't as tense as the
soc.culture.christian boards...I'm Christian, but I don't listen to any
Christian music because I generally find it unsatisfying...I tried to find
a Christian hardcore band, but haven't found one. I've come to the
conclusion that there probably isn't any contemporary Christian music that
I like, but it would be nice if I COULD find some. I'm looking for
something really powerful, but not ridiculously flashy like metal(i.e. I
don't like Tourniquet or D & K, and Petra is too poppy); straight-ahead,
no-kidding hardcore or punk, in the tradition of Minor Threat, Fugazi,
Husker Du, Black Flag, the Minutemen, Rites of Spring,...Can anybody help
me out? Thanks! Nice to be here, looking forward to it.
Love,
Ara "Celibate (for life!!!!)" Semerjian

One Bad Pig is punk/thrash. I'm not an expert on that style of music, but I
do own their 1990 CD (Myrrh Records, believe it or not) entitled Swine Flew.

As far as I know, these guys are somewhat unique in the Christian music
world. They even do a remake of Petra's Judas Kiss that would make Bob
Hartman squench his face up!

My favorite thing about this group is the lyrics! It's a stone cold,
blatant, "Christ in your face" attitude!

"Hey Punk!"
Words and Music by Paul Q-Pek
(note: each occurance of HP means to yell "Hey Punk!")
(another note: this song is only 1:40 long = it's fast)

(verse 1)
HP You got the clothes
HP Ring in your nose
HP You got the black boots with the kickin' steel toes
HP You got the beer
HP You got no fear
HP You got the thrashin' music chewin' on your ear

CHORUS
Why don't you realize
Open your blinded eyes
Your heart has no disguise
As evil as can be
I got some news for you
I found out what is true
And you can have it too
If you would just believe

(verse 2)
HP You make the scene
HP The streets are mean
HP Your fist is pounding like a runaway machine
HP You left your home
HP Out on your own
HP I tell you, you don't have to live your life alone

CHORUS

(verse 3)
HP Your anarchy
HP Is slavery
HP Only through power of the Blood can you be free
HP Yes someone died
HP Yeah, He was crucified
HP Christ Jesus gave His life for punks like you and me

CHORUS

HP Why won't you believe?

Oh, please! Maybe their first album , _A_Christian_Banned_ would please this
fellow, but anything by OBP after that has too high of a sucrose level to be
considered hardcore punk.

Some stuff for the hardcore opunk fans to test spin:

Fluffy
The Crucified
Scaterd Few
Plague Of Ethyls (this is a stretch)

Well, you should! Ha ha! They're great and I just found out today that they are
friends of one of the secretaries that work here, so hopefully I'll get to meet
them soon. (They attend the same church that she does).

Just a note...I think Bob Hartman actually plays the intro to "Judas' Kiss" on the
CD. Correct me if I'm wrong (as no doubt you will!)

Um, I'm not totally sure it would make Hartman squench his face up,
especially since he's the one who provided the guitar licks for OBP's
version. If memory serves me correctly, he also appeared with them on stage
once, to help play the song. Correct me if I'm wrong.

eek! I hope I'm not too late! Do *not* - I repeat *DO NOT* go out and
buy One Bad Pig right now. Now, don't get my wrong - I think One Bad
Pig is funny and entertaining and stuff, but One Bad Pig is most surely
NOT what was being asked for here. One Bad Pig is like....well, kinda
like what Vanilla Ice was to rap. They are a cleaned-up, humorized,
Christian version of punk - suburban, clean-cut, Christian punk. Most
real punks would consider them a joke and likely be offended by them.
Not all of them, but a lot. I know. Now, you might want to check out
One Bad Pig just to see what they're like, but I doubt it will be up
your alley. Don't go in with high expectations, or expecting them to
be what you're looking for.
As far as real punk/hardcore in the Christian scene...well, there really
isn't all that much - and most of it that exists is unsigned/underground.
Early Crucified has Minor Threat influence, but you're not likely to find
it. The Crucified's self-titled album might be up your alley though. As
of right now it's sorta hard to find too, though. It is being re-released.
Scaterd-few's album _Sin Disease_ is quite excellent, although not all
hardcore or punk. Fluffy's first album _Fluffy Luvs You_ is punkish, but
not exactly that Dischord/DC punk sound. There's a band called Childhood
that put out a demo, but I don't know anything about them really. The demo
is pretty cool, but about 2 years or so old. Let's see...oh yeah...
Crashdog has a few albums out and they sound sorta Sex Pistol-ish. The
first _Hard Knocks for Hard Heads_ is sorta hard to find (at least I
haven't found it), but I don't think _Humane Society_ and _Pursuit of
Happiness_ are too hard to find. They are also supposed to have a new
album coming out soon called _Mud Angels_. The Lead might be of interest
to you as well, although most of their stuff will probably be kind of
hard to find. I'm not sure what other variations of music you're inter-
ested in, but that should give you an idea of the punk/hardcore stuff out
there. I'm probably missing a few bands, but that's most of the ones I
know of. As far as the underground scene, I can't help much there. But
that's a definite place you might want to start trying to look into.
Hope this helps some.

again...One Bad Pig is....suburban punk. With each album they've mellowed
out their style. Titles are _A Christian Banned_ (independent demo),
_Smash_ (imo, the best with perhaps the demo near it), _Swine Flew_,
_I Scream Sunday_ (or however they spelled it), and _Live: Blow the
House Down_ (a live recording from c-stone '91).

I like the earlier ones, and I think they are humorous sometimes and have
a funny live show, but I wouldn't go around recommending them to people
asking for punk bands like Black Flag, Husker Du, Misfits, etc. (btw,
Minor Threat is totally cool :)

actually, Bob played the guitar solo on the Pig's version. Although he
certainly may have squenched up his face.

Although I would agree with most of what was written above, I would
add that One Bad Pig started out as a real punk band ministering
in the clubs of Austin. If you heard their demo 'A Christian Banned' you
might agree. It was only after they shifted focus to the Christian market
that they became 'suburban, clean-cut, Christian punk.' Anyone
who has listened to all their Christian releases would also probably
notice that they started closer to the real thing with 'Smash' and
got further and further away from the real thing with each album.

Let me second this thought. One Bad Pig is quirky, which makes for a
great album the first month, a good album for the next couple, and then shelf
weights for the rest of eternity.
If you like hardcore, then I highly recommend The Lead's _Burn this
Record_. Long's Christian Music may still have some of these. Singer/guitar
player Julio Rey has gone on to do a few more projects, so watch for his name
on releases.
Although not quite punk, I also recommend The Crucified's self titled
and _Pillars of Humanity_. Bear in mind, however, that I have never heard any
of the bands you mention in your original request for bands. These are good
bands, even if they don't sound like yours.
Actually, let's make a list.

The Lead _Burn this Record_
The Crucified _The Crucified_
_Pillars of Humanity_
scaterd few _Sin Disease_
Fluffy _Fluffy Luvs You_
Crashdog _Humane Society_

There are certainly a few more than this, all of which escape me.

Watch for "The Blamed" on Tooth and Nail Records. They are being
billed as "Old School Punk". I heard that "Focused", another Tooth and
Nail band, is remnicent of the Crucified, so look for them, too.
Another mentioned band, "Sanctified Noise", is really cool, but I
haven't been in touch with them for some time. If anyone out there knows
where I can reach them, I would be very, very grateful!
