I don't have any other information, but the soundtrack is available on
CD. I bought it a couple of months ago after searching high and low.
There is not much on the liner notes that you don't already know,
however.

BTW, I don't know if anyone loved or hated the film, but my wife and I really
enjoyed it. It was a variant on "Local Hero" with more myths tossed about
and the visuals made me really want to see it on film rather than on video.
Too bad films such as this get no distribution while Jean-Claude's nonsense
clutters the screens.
Hi Mike,

There you go - I hope I got it all right, I'm currently all drugged up
having had my wisdom teeth out on Monday (groan!).
I hope that's satisfied your curiosity. :)

I loved this film too--I had to jump in when I saw you mention Local
Hero--I just saw some archaic Mark Knopfler vinyl relic that was
emblazoned with the "Local Hero" sticker on the front for $1.98!
Anyway--Secret of Roan Inish is one of my all time fave family
films--we're planning on buying it to add to the video collection. We
have a pretty supportive market here for indie films--SORI played at
the local art/indie film complex here for nearly 6 months--even after
it was released on video. And since it came in at the local national
chain video store (only two copies of it of course), I haven't been
able to rent it once--always out. :-)
I think I recall reading somewhere that the soundtrack was done by
this guy, who happens to be a friend of John Sayles--that is generally
the way he makes his films--the cinematographer, if I'm recalling, was
Haskell Wexler, an old and respected name in the film biz. Generally
his friends make the film with him working for virtually nil, just so
he can get his films made, and because they want to work with him.
Considering the body of work by Sayles, I guess I understand why that
is so. He is definitely one of my fav American film makers.
Especially since he made such a beautiful film in Donegal!

Technically, the Butterfly is a slip jig, in 9/8. I agree that the Roan Inish
soundtrack is excellent. The playing is very nice, the sound, especially the flute,
is superb, and if you liked the movie, listening to the soundtrack will bring back
that "mood" of Ireland presented in the film.
Somewhere I read a lot of details about the film, including about Mason Daring and
how he developed the soundtrack. I think it was on a promotional web page for the
film. Try this web page: http://www.flp.com/
Highly recommended.
