I'm partial to the Moore & Broaders cover of Dougie's classic.
I'd say the man wot wrote it. Dougie Maclean.
: Who does the best female vocals
: on this tune.
Francis Black certainly does a good version, though I'm not sure if she
ever recorded it.

I'll second that!!

Specify: There are TWO Caledonias!
Sandra Sparks
..and I like Hector Gilchrist and Liz Thompson's version on the Selkie album.
Elaine.

One group who does it is The Barra MacNeils from Cape Breton. They
feature Lucy MacNeil for most of the song.

I heard her in an interview a few years ago say she recorded an
album of Celtic music, but her C & W fans got all bent out of shape
so she went back the other. Have any of you seen this album? I've
checked with the big record shops and some of the small catalogues,
but have seen no sign of it.

Mary Black does a popular version but she sings in something like 4/4 and
the original is in 3/4 or 6/8 or something. You have to listen to them
both to get really annoyed. I prefer MacLean's phrasing.
