Hello.

I am looking for some lyrics to "Red is the Rose". I would also like the
melody as well. I had found some lyrics, but I misplaced them when I moved,
and I would really like to have some form of the song, so that I can work it
up.

I am also looking for some songs dating from tenth century Ireland(if
possible). Any help that I could get would be most appreciated.

Here are the lyrics we always used (took them off a Clancy recording I
think). The tune is Loch Lomond

RED IS THE ROSE
Joe Heaney, via Helen Schneyer & Lucy Simpson
Come over the hills, my bonny Irish lass
Come over the hills to your darling
You choose the road, love, and I will make the vow
And I'll be your true love forever
Chorus:
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear are the waters that flow from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.
Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed
And the moon and the stars they were shining
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she'd be my true love forever
It is not for the loss of my own sister Kate
It is not for the loss of my mother,
Tis all for the loss of my bonnie Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.

The version I tape Joe doing 20 yrs ago is some what different than what
you've got here
instead of the Boyne, he sang "the stream", the rest of the chorus is the
same.

Over the mountain, down in the glen
By a little thatch cot in the valley
Where the Thrush & the Linnet sing their song & their ditty
And my love's leaning over the half door

Down by the seashore on a cold summer's eve
With the moon rising over the heather
O the sun it shone clear on her locks of golden hair
As she swore she'd be my love forever
It's not for the parting of my sister Kate
Nor for the loss of my mother
But it's for the loss of my bonny blue eyed lass
That I'm leaving my home land forever
Joe used the same tune but very much sung in the old (sean-nos) style

I think this has been recorded by Enya's dad on his tape "Live at
Leo's". It's certainly one of his favourites.

"Red is the Rose" has the same melody as "Loch Lomond." Or
almost exactly, anyway.

The lyrics are as follows:
CHORUS
Red is the Rose that in yonder garden grows

Fair is the lily of the valley

Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne

But my love is fairer than any.

Come over the hills my bonny Irish lass

Come over the hills to your darling

You choose the road, love and I'll make a vow
That I'll be your darlin' forever.(CHORUS)

It's down in Killarney's green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the starst they were shining
For the moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she said she'd be my lover forever (CHORUS)

It's not for the parting with my sister Kate
It's not for the grief of my mother
It's all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass

That my heart is breaking forever.

Both Tommy Makem, and Schooner Fare have recorded this, as
well as Robbie O'Connell and Joe Heaney.
