Loyalists songs sound a lot like Republican songs...

I've downloaded a few Orange/Loyalist/Unionist songs to listen to...

... You know, the old "know your enemy" and all that....

So I'm listening to the "Battle of Garvagahy" as seen from their perspective...

And I listened to:

"My old man said be a Celtic Fan" - which is extremly pissing me off...

"I'd rather die young" - Blue notes?

"Fields of Ulster" - Glasgow Celtic.

"The Walls of Derry (Fuck the pope and the IRA)

Derry's Protestant Boys - Flute Band (Ironically, I enjoy listening to this as I
like bands and flute bands)

Glasgow Rangers - The Ian Paisley Rap (samples of the man intermixed with
sectarian songs)

Loyalists - Willie McBride (This is the normal song)

Garvaghy Road - another version by the loyalists

Loyalists (UDA) who shall separate us? Extreme pro-murder song.

Ok, having listened to these songs a few times - to try and get the words and to
see if I got to like them... I've a few observations....

1) Many of these songs are very like Republican songs, even down to the music
and the emotion and heart...

2) The few songs I found were more extreme in advocating murder (not like the
OLD pro-IRA songs of long ago, these songs are current and the last song I
mentioned advocates the murder of Adams and McGuinness in the lyrics...

3) We've often heard about the sectarian nature of some of the Celtic Football
Club chants/songs, but little about the Rangers songs/chants... So that's why I
began my search to find out if Rangers songs were sectarian... I kinda knew
they were, but wanted proof... Now I have it....

At the end of the day, I'm a lover of football (usa'ers read Soccer), and I love
Chelsea Football Club... I'm also a big fan of Celtic... I wanted to know
what Rangers fans were singing, and now I do...

I also have Glasgow Celtic singing "A soldiers song" and The Scottish National
Anthem played on the bagpipes...

If anyone wants any of the above mentioned mp3's (including the Loyalist ones -
I wouldn't mention then and then not make them available), email me and let me
know and I'll email them to you.

Meant Glasgow Rangers

Now listenign to "give me a home with no pope, no rome" which again is pissing
off no end...

Listening to "Wake up Gerry" - a song telling Gerry Adams to "hang himself"...
Lovely!

Update:

When I downloaded Celtic Football songs (that is what I used to find them), I
didn't find half the vindictive, nasty lyrics... Fields of Athenry and such...

I still haven't found the "No surrender to the IRA" I once heard the Rangers
fans singing while watching a match on TV.... Can anyone help?

Just listening to "the men behind the wire" from a Loyalist perspective...

You know, it's sad really... They are so like us, and we so like them...
Divided as we were by the Brits...

All Celts should unite!

A United Ireland will be to spit in the face of the British who divided us...
Who think of the celts and scots as second class citizens... Who fantasise they
they actualy matter in the modern world...

I would so much love to see a United Ireland... And for the life of me, I can't
understand why Unionists are against it... It's not if there is a UI they have
to leave or something! They will be welcomed into our Nation...

Why are Unionists so against a political re-adjustment of a map?

I've come to this conclusion... The Loyalists and Rangers football club and
the majority of their fans are the most extreme racist and sectarian bastards
alive today... They would be welcome in the ranks of the KKK... This only
confirms what I believed before I begain my search....

So now I know... While many people accuse Celtic Football Club of "sectarian
chants", if the truth be known, the Rangers fans are the true owners of that
disgraceful badge of shame....

If anyone doubts my findings, listen to the songs, or read their lyrics...
You'll come around...

its almost an off-hand compliment...

Well done Ray. In a test of historical insight, I wouldn't know
whether to bet on you or Nik normally, but you are ahead on
this one.

The music will be, in most cases, considerably older
than any current set of lyrics. The music will probably pre-date
modern republicanism or loyalism, and will have been used
by a long string of factions, militias, gangs, ideologies and
organisations reaching into the past.

Some of the Orange lyrics may well be among the very oldest
versions still in use today.

In your own posts of recent weeks, you have posted very
modern republican lyrics - specific to the troubles of recent
years - that same music will be recycled into the future too.

There are some important points of difference, of course, but often I
detect an almost apish mirroring of behaviour/statements/style by
Loyalists.

There are also much older Irish Nationalist songs as well...dating
back to 1798 and before...you already know that though...don't let

Well, what I saw was that Ray had posted a message that
potentially opened up into a a discussion of society, culture,
and a shared Irish heritage. Have you any idea how rare
that sort of thing is here in soc.culture.irish ?

And your response? You closed him down with an
immediate bit of kneejerk prejudice. You know how
vulnerable he is to that sort of thing. You were acting

They certainly are, but there seems to be a move afoot to come out with more
non sectarian songs, like "every other Saturday" There's a verions of
"Glory, Glory Galsgow Rangers" that says the Glasgow Celtic are "sure a
mighty team". Every Proddy kid in my neighbourhood, male or female knew the
words to "Billy Boys" beofre they were 3.
I don't get the point of the chant that says "no-one likes us we don't
care". I do like the one that says "we hate coca cola, we hate pepsi too,
we're the tartan army, we drink irn bru.

Fantastic!

I've always been a bit of a proxy 'City' fan - I admired the way they still
attracted gates of 20K+ even when they were in the old '3rd Division' back
in th 80's, but to hear they have a derogatory terracing song about
something that happened to Man U nearly half a century ago engenders within
me the utmost respect.

Long may such anti Man U bigotry prevail!

Same goes for any song regarding those disgusting blue-nosed proddy Rangers
bastards - fuck them all to hell.

I have lived in Ireland and have purchased, in past, the magazine
"Tiocfaidh ar La" the Republican Celtic Supporters magazine...I am
*well* aware of the connection. Furthermore I note, that last year,
iirc, the sale of Paramilitary materials/items was banned outside
Ibrox and Celtic Park...

Bertie has been saying, regarding that matter, for the last few years
that he would not go into coalition with Sinn Fein *IF* the IRA were

I would submit to you that it is the PD's and NOT FF that would refuse

It's a comic song. They were taking the piss:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Talbot,_1st_Earl_of_Tyrconnel
William's armies were presumably quite pleased that Talbot
was failing in his presumed ambitions.

As for it being the regimental march for the REME, I suppose
it might be a good march for a light infantry regiment, but
the REME was - um - mechanical, let's say. Maybe Lillibulero
sounds like an engine? I doubt the words saw much use
on ceremonial occasions, but you never know, with the REME.

When reading stuff on wikipedia, you should always look at the 'Discussion'
and 'History' pages to see what other people have said.

And at protests, demo's etc. You should google the "Raging Grannies", and
awesome group of Canadian women, and maybe found a group of Raging Irish
grannies. I'm sure a nice Orish boyo like you could round up some grannies.
I think of you as a Dudley Doright kinda character, even if you do have the
wrong colour hair. If ye arent familiar with Dudley, ye'll have to google
him, he's Canadian too. I must confess that when I think of you, I think of
reworking the Roger Ramjet theme song to a Ray song. So ther you have my
image of you, a conflation of Roger and Dudley. ( definately do not mean
that in an unkind way).

Marching to Glory, or Marching to Georgia or something like that. The Billy
Boys were the gang named after it's thug/hooligan/fascist/scab founder Billy
Fullerton. He had a bloody rivalry with another gang from a Catholic
neighbourhood, but sectarianism was probably secondary to all his other
prejudices. I seem to remember hearing or reading that he tried to start a
Glasgow chapter of the KKK. IIRC he was a card carrying fascist, and was a
strikebreaker to boot.

Not to mention that most animated characters should stay that way, Batman
maybe the one exception.

I am working to much these days to have time for anything, but here are the
lyrics, maybe someone else will do it
Roger Ramjet and his Eagles
Fighting for our freedom
Fly through in and outer space
Not to join 'em but to beat him.

Roger Ramjet he's our man
Hero of our nation
For his adventures just be sure
And stay tuned to this station.

So come and join us all you kids
For lots of fun and laughter
As Roger Ramjet and his men
Get all the crooks they're after.

Roger Ramjet he's our man
Hero of our nation
For his adventures just be sure
And stay tuned to this station.

You seem well up on football chants and their sectarian (or not) nature, do you
have a website about all this by any chance?
