On Saturday, CelticFest will host the first ever "Progressive Celtic Rock
Concert" in Mississippi featuring THE KILLDARES from Dallas along with
Nick Kelly from Denver and Sean McGuinness from Jackson.
CelticFest begins Friday night at 7:00 pm with Dr. Ed Miller, a leading
Scottish folklorist, presenting "Robert Burns: Folklorist, Linguist,
Poet" with discussion and musical illustration of Burn's contributions.
The Burns presentation will be followed by our annual Friday session/ceili
at the Ag. Museum, with admission free and open to the public.
One of the best features of CelticFest has always been the Saturday night
ceili with Irish set dancing (led by Mary Ann McGrath Swaim, T.C.R.G., of
the New Orleans School of Irish Dance) and the playing of the "CelticFest
Ceili Orchestra."
Also: a variety of great children's/family activities, craftsmen and
artisans with their works on display, and Celtic specialty items on sale.

"Robert Burns: Folklorist, Linguist, Poet,"
with Dr. Miller discussing and musically illustrating Burns' many
contributions.
The Burns presentation will be followed by an Irish ceili dance. Both the
presentation and the ceili are free and open to the public. This event
will begin at 7:30 pm at the Jim Buck Ross Agricultural and Forestry
Museum (1150 Lakeland Drive), and it is supported in part by a grant from
the Mississippi Humanities Council.
Robert Burns is widely regarded as Scotland's greatest poet, and he made
extraordinary contributions in the collection, interpretation, and
preservation of Scottish cultural traditions. This presentation will
explore of the broad impact of Scottish traditions on cultural life in
America today (with special referecne to the south). Also contributing to
this presentation will be Carolyn Ware, Ph.D. (Department of Oral History,
Univ. of Southern Miss.), James Flanagan, Ph.D. (Department of
Anthropology, Univ. of Southern Miss.), and David Gleeson, M.A. (History
Department, Miss. State Univ.).
The Humanities Lecture is a prelude to the 5th annual Mississippi
CelticFest, a celebration of the music, dance, and other traditions of
Ireland, Scotland, and other Celtic nations. CelticFest '96 will take
place at the Agricultural and Forestry Museum in Jackson on September 14h
& 15, and will feature Ed Miller along with a host of other Celtic
musicians and dancers performing on 4 stages, children's' activities,
workshops (dance, music, Gaelic language, literature, history, etc.),
artisans, and more.
