I have a rather brilliant song called Montrose on the Steeleye span 'Live
at Last' album. Can anyone tell me if there are any other recordings of
this and if so by who?

I've got to second this request... I just got the CD reissue of 'Live At

much I loved that ballad (it's too bad they never recorded it for a studio
album). I don't think I've ever heard it on another recording, and I've
got a whole lot of British and Irish trad stuff. If anyone knows the
answer to the above question I'd love to hear it.

I'd also like to know more about the song "Montrose" itself if anybody
knows... and if it appears in any song collections.

The Battlefield Band has a song on one of its albums called Montrose
(...I don't know which album it is on -- my CDs are not together right
now...) but I don't know if it is the same song or not.

This song was written by Rick Kemp of the band - ie it's not traditional - I've never heard of anyone else doing it (who would take the time?)

Are you sure it was written by Rick Kemp??? I don't seem to remember that

would suspect that he used traditional text or tunes or both in putting
the song together. If it's truly his own composition in it's entirety then
I would be in major awe of him!

As a bass player I'm in awe of Rick Kemp anyway. I know that some of the
lyric ('I'll serve you in such noble ways...') is part of a poem by the
Marquis of Montrose himself.

Hello? Live at Last on CD? Anyone have details on where it's
available from?

Is it on the BGO label? Love those people...

"Live At Last" is on BGO, as are "Below The Salt", "Parcel Of Rogues",
"And Now We Are Six", "Commoners Crown", "All Around My Hat", "Rocket
Cottage", "Storm Force Ten" and "Original Masters". Coming shortly if not
out already is "Sails Of Silver". Sound and original liner notes on each
are superb, with the one flaw being that the same new essay appears in
each.

All Steeleye Span fans should support this label and pick these up. They
are VASTLY SUPERIOR to the reissues put out by Shanachie in the States.
The Shanachie reissues will make good coasters for your drinks though,
while you sit back and listen to the professionally remastered BGO
versions.

I'm just sick and tired of getting lousy packaging and sound from
Shanachie, so I'm also going to recommend that anyone who sees anything
with a Shanachie logo on it should seek out the import and get a good
version of it. Here's an open message to Shanachie: GET YOUR F**KING SHIT
TOGETHER AND STOP CHEATING PEOPLE YOU F**KING CHEAP BASTARDS!!

Yeah, got all those. The only problem being that I have several of
the above on the inferior Shanachie releases (what can I say...it was
the only way you could get them on CD at the time).

Yeah, I fully intend to pick up all I can on BGO and give away the
others. Only one complaint about BGO; they didn't include the Storm
Force Ten lyrics (the LP had them).

No kidding. I still cringe every time I look at the spine of my
Shanachie "Parcel of Rogues" CD, where it is written:

STEELELEYE SPAN

No one's ever been able to explain to me why Shanachie started to
re-release the Steeleye catalog then stopped halfway. I've been
waiting for Rocket Cottage, Storm Force Ten and Live at Last for
years, as I'm sure many others have.

The 2 songs are not the same. The Steeleye Span version is 15:12 minutes
long. It does not indicate if it is traditional or written by the
group.

The Battlefield Band version is written (words & music) by Brian McNeill.
It is on the CD 'On The Rise'. It runs 4:27 minutes long. In
Battlefield Band's book, 'Forward with Scottland's Past', there are
background notes on the songs. The one reguarding Montrose is as
follows....
" This deals with the religious turmoil of the seventeenth century
Britian. Montrose was Charles the First's principal supporter in
Scotland. He raised the standard of the Royalist cause in September 1644
at Tippermuir near Perth, his troops a ragged bunch of Scots and Irish
Gaels who charged their enemies for the most part with nothing but
stones. For the next year he was to lead this wild little army in a
brilliant guerrilla campaign, the length and breadth of Scotland, beating
his opponents time and time again, but eventually perpetual problems of
supply and supperiority of enemy numbers told against him. He was beaten
decisvely at the battle of Philiphaugh in 1645 and forced to flee, his
remaining forces either scattered or
slaughtered".

all that often) but where would one find BGO ? Internet?
Mail order comapny?

I don't think I've ever seen this label. Have been looking for CD
of Storm Force 10 for years....

d'avance merci,
Mary Margaret

You'll find nearly every Steeleye Span record between 1972 and 1980
reissued on BGO. The last two, Sails Of Silver and Live At Last, are
supposed to be available soon.

I order the CDs through my Hamburg based mail order company, your mileage
may vary. For a BGO catalogue, you should send a large (A4) S.A.E. to

Beat Goes On Records
P.O. Box 22
Bury St. Edmunds
Suffolk, IP28 6XQ
England

There's a version on "Steeleye Span & Maddy Prior"'s "a rare collection 1972-1996" that shows up on Pandora. I don't know the label, though.

However, the Pandora version seems to have been edited down to only 4-5 minutes.
