Hi,
Does anyone know of a discography for the Rankin family and
even better a track listing for each of their albums ? Having enjoyed
"Duanag do Mhabu" so much which has three Rankins on it, I'm interested
in hearing more. I've seen them on TV singing the lament "Mo Run Geal
Dileas" as if it was a skipping song, but I'm wondering what other
traditional Gaelic songs they've covered.

thanks
Craig

I understand they have at least three albums out, but we only have two.
Here's a track listing for those:

"The Rankin Family" "Fare Thee Well Love"
1. Mo run geal dileas 1. Orangedale Whistle
2. Lonely Island 2. An T-each Ruadh (The Red Horse)
3. Loving Arms 3. Fair and Tender Ladies
4. Piano Medley: Memories of Bishop 4. Fiddle Medley: Lime Hill, Keep
MacDonald, The Tweedledale the Country Bonnie Lassie,
Club, MacFarlane's Rant, Little Donald in the Pig
Lively Steps Pen
5. Mairi's Wedding/Michael Rankin's 5. Fisherman's Son
Reel
6. Roving Gypsy Boy 6. Tell Me Ma
7. Mist-Covered Mountains (in Gaelic) 7. You Left a Flower
8. Fiddle Medley: The Warlock's 8. Fare Thee Well Love
Strathspey, Bog-an-Lochan,
Nine Pint Coggie, Mr. J Forbes,
Hull's Reel
9. Lament of the Irish Immigrant 9. Gillis Mountain
10. Jigging Medley: Whiskey in a Cup, 10. Gaelic Medley: Mo shuil ad'
King George, Old King's Reel, dheidh, Buain a' rainich,
King's Reel, Bodachan He mo leannan, Fail 'il o
a'Mhirein

-------------------------
Both of these are outstanding. "Mist-Covered Mountains," sung a capella in
Gaelic, is beautiful. "Lament of the Irish Immigrant," also a capella,
is a true tearjerker of a song. They do a wonderful version of "Mairi's
Wedding," and the Jigging Medley on the first album is a real
toe-tapper.

My wife introduced me to the sounds of this group and I was totally wowed.
I can't recommend them highly enough.

It's a tradition in Cape Breton that any kind of song can be
turned into a waulking song. This includes "Mo Run Geal Dileas".

The third album is called "North Country", and so far is not available in
the U.S.

I thought someone mentioned Alexandria in this thread. If you are closeby,
the Rankins have appeared at the GLEN ECHO IRISH FOLK FESTIVAL (now at
Wolf Trap the last Sunday in May) for the past two years. I don't know if
they're coming back this year, but keep your ears open.

The Rankins just started a "fanclub" newsletter. I'm afraid I don't have
the address right now, but I'll try to post later.

Their third album is called "North Country", available as E2 80683 on the
EMI Music (Canada) Label.
1. North country
2. Oich u agus h-iuraibh eile
3. Borders and time
4. Mull river shuffle
5. Lisa brown
6. Ho ro nighean donn bhoidheach
7. Tramp miner
8. Rise again
9. Leis an lurgainn
10. Christy campbell medley
11. Saved in the arms
12. Johnny tulloch
13. Turn that boat around

IMHO: The album is very heavily produced, and lacks the "life" of their
first two. Part of my let down was having heard some of the tunes in
concert, where they had that life. Leon Dubinsky's "Rise Again" was just
destroyed. The album just seems to miss what their first two albums had.
