This shift, like many other around the country today probably, dealt only
with Celtic music in celebration of St. Patrickąs Day. Iąd been looking
forward to this shift for a while.

Next weekąs shift will be a normal one, but then the following Sunday
(Easter Sunday) will be all gospel. Thatąs gonna be a fun one, too.

Cheers.

Mac Benford and the Woodshed Allstars/Hangman's
Reel/Old Time Music on the Air, Vol 1/Rounder
[Topsoil theme song]

The Star of Munster Trio/Bill Blackąs-OąDonovans/The Rushy
Mountain/Globestyle Irish
[This cd is one of a set put together for Topic records
by Ron Kavana. All sets highlight Irish music; this particular
cd focuses on the music from Sliabh Luachra in the 40s and 50s.]
Roger Landes/Slopes of Sliabh Luachra/Dragon Reels/Ranger
[This is a new cd to me. Roger is not only a fine producer
but also a great bouzouki player (bouzoukiist?).]
Chris Grotewohl/Devanneyąs Goat-The Sandmount-The Fairhead/Under
the Influence/5th String
[This is a great cd of Celtic music as played on the 5
string banjo. The cd is produced by Roger Landes and,
among others, features the playing of Zan McLeod who was
featured in the next song.]
James Kelley and Zan McLeod/Julia Delaney-Christmas Eve/The Ring
Sessions/Faetain
[Zan is a good picker who spent some time here in Chapel Hill.]

Open House/Drag Her Round the Road-Sporting Paddy-Connemara
Stockings-James Keaneąs/Hoof and Mouth/Green Linnet
[Yay, itąs a new album from Open House! I really like
their mixture of Irish, World Music and Sandy Silvaąs
pecussive feet.]
Alan Kelly/Trip to Dingle/Out of the Blue/Green Linnet
[This is another new album. Alan is a piano accordian
wizard. This title caught my eye because I really wouldnąt
mind if I were taking a trip to Dingle about now. No sir,
wouldnąt mind it a bit.]
Kevin Crawford/Blackberry Blossom-Bradyąs-The Steam Packet/ądą
Flute Album/Green Linnet
[The first tune in this set is the łother˛ Blackberry Blossom,
not the one you usually hear around these parts. Kevin plays
all sorts of whistles and flutes.]

Seamus Egan/Lark in the Morning Medley/Masters of the Banjo/Arhoolie
[This set featured Seamus Egan. Seamus is a brilliant
multi-instrumentalist. By the time he was 15 he had won the
all Ireland Championship on *4* different instruments.
Child Prodigy indeed! Well, now he is 26 and heąs gotten
even better. I started out here with the tenor banjo cut
which was done is a pretty traditional style.]
Out of Ireland Band/The Doon Reel-The Old Thatched Cabin/Out
of Ireland/Shanachie
[Seamus is playing the flute on this cut with a star studded
band. The song was played in the Out of Ireland movie when
the subject, Tim OąBrien, had emigrated to the US in the 30s
and got caught up in the intoxicating American fast lane.
To signify this the Doon Reel is interrupted with a 30s
Amercian jazz style. To signify Timąs rough end the track
ends with łThe Old Thatched Cabin˛ which is a mournful
sounding air.]
Seamus Egan/Masonąs Apron-My Love is in America/When Juniper Sleeps/Shanachie
[Here Seamus uses the nylon strung guitar to bring about a
contemporary, yet extremely satisfying, jazzy version of these
two traditional songs.]

Solas/The Yello Tinker/Cranking Out-Master Crowleyąs #2/Solas/Shanachie
[The Seamus set led into a promo for a new band that he is a
part of, Solas. This supergroup is playing in Carrboro
this Thursday. I gave away tickets and will be heading down
to the box office to get my own tomorrow. Not much Celtic
music hits this area so there are many people slobbering over
this show.]

Cherish the Ladies/Ned of the Hill/New Day Dawning/Green Linnet
[Now for a little political set. This first cut is a slow
air played on the flute by Joannie Madden.]
Ron Kavana/Young Ned of the Hill/Home Fire/Green Linnet
[This is an original song that Ron Kavana wrote about the
problems in Northern Ireland. He mentions in the liner
notes that as hard as he tried he could not come up with a
song as good as Shane MacGowanąs łBirmingham Six˛ which I
played next.]
Pogues/Streets of Sorrow-Birmingham Six/If I Should Fall From Grace
with God/Island
[Shane is/was a fabulous songwriter. Letąs hope he sobers up
and stays with us for a long time. I worry about that guy.]

Dick Gaughan/Song For Ireland/Handful of Earth/Green Linnet
[This cut was probably played on folk shows everywhere today.]
Altan/Paddyąs Trip to Scotland-Dinkyąs-The Shetland Fiddler/Live
and Best of/Green Linnet
[I played this cut more for the tune łDinkyąs˛ than the one
that mentions Paddy. I really really like łDinkyąs.˛ I
actually heard it first from Popcorn Behavior, a trio of
young kids from New England that are amazingly good.]
Cathie Ryan/Sheain Bhain/Cathie Ryan/Shanachie
[This cut, which features mainly borhdran and voice, is one
of the more traditional ones on this cd. Cathie a member
of Cherish the Ladies.]

Martin Hayes/Bony Crossing the Alps-The Maids of Feakle/Under the
Moon/Green Linnet
[That Bony sure does get around doesnąt he. Other tunes
are called łBonaparte Crossing the Rhine˛ and łBonaparte
Crossing the Rockies.˛ He always leaves though as
referenced in his song łBonarparteąs Retreat.˛ Heąs a rambler.]
Sean Keane/McLean of Pennycross-Maggie Cameron-Duntroon Castle/Jig it
in Style/Claddagh
[Sean is the fiddle player for the Chieftains.]
Brendan Mulvihill/Boys of the Lough-Mary Walker-McFaddenąs-
Dylanąs/Masters of the Folk Violin/Arhoolie
[I like Brendanąs fiddle sound; at times it sounds almost
classical.]

Milladoiro/The Clumsy Lover/As Fades de Estrano Nome/Green Linnet
[Celtic music from Spain.]
Brendan Power/Si Bheag, Se Mhor/New Irish Harmonica/Green Linnet
[This is one of the most beautiful tunes I know. If anyone
could help me with the pronunciation or the translation
Iąd appreciate it.]
Natalie MacMaster/My Friend Buddy/No Boundaries/Green Linnet
[I ended up my shift with some Cape Breton music. This
first one is by Buddy MacMasterąs niece. I wish I had some
of Buddyąs music because it wouldąve fit into this set well.
By the way, this new cd from Natalie is great.]
Jerry Holland/Beautiful Lake Ainslie-Miss Grace Newzies-Mr Bernard-
Compliments to Buddy MacMaster/The Fiddlesticks Collection/
Green Linnet
[Now, here is my absolute favorite Cape Breton fiddle
player. I picked this cut because of the reference to
Buddy MacMaster in the last tune.]

Ashley MacIsaac/Rusty D-con-STRUCK-tion/Hi, How Are You Today?/A&M
[My St. Patrickąs Day shift ended on an extremely
contemporary note. Ashley is a Cape Breton fiddle player
who melds the traditonal music with rock and roll. Sometimes
it works. Overall he does a better job with the rock side
than most celtic-rock bands who tend to lean more to cheese
Mtv metal.]

Cheers.
