Does any one have guitar chords to any and all of Mary Blacks' songs.
I have found a few of the traditional ballads but none of her more
modern pieces. I am also interested in other comtempory Irish music.
Any help would be most appreciated!
Thanks

Well, here are some songs you might like. The first three are off Mary's
album "Babes in the Wood", the next one is off some other album (don't
know for sure off which one).
After that I put 2 songs from Dolores Keane's "Solid Ground" album.
For the second of these I gave the full lyrics as author Kieran Halpin
wrote them (Dolores leaves out bits and pieces), but with the chords
that are used on her album.

Bright Blue Rose - Jimmy MacCarthy

[As performed by Mary Black on "Babes in the Wood"]

D G
I skimmed across black water, without once submerging,
D A7
Onto the banks of an urban morning
D G
That hungers the first light, much much more
D A7 D
Than mountains ever do

D G
And she like a ghost beside me, goes down with the ease of a dolphin
D A7
And emerges unlearned, unshames, unharmed
D G
For she is the perfect creature, natural in every feature
D A7 D
And I am the geek with the alchemists' stone.

[Chorus]
Em A7 D
For all of you who must discover,
Em A7 D
For all who seek to understand,
Em A7 D
For having left the path of others
C G A7
You find a very special hand.

D G
And it is a holy thing, and it is a precious time
D A7
And it is the o - only way
D G
Forget-me-nots among the snow, it's always been and so it goes
D A7 D
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

[repeat chorus, repeat 3rd verse]

D
One bright blue rose outlives all those
G
Two thousand years and still it goes
D A7 D
To ponder his death and his life eternally.

Thorn upon the Rose - Julie Mathews

[As performed by Mary Black on "Babes in the Wood"]

[capo 2nd, actual key is A]

G C G
Its taste was sweet, like summer wine
C D
The heart that beat in double ti - ime
G C G
So he waltzed right in, and bowled you over
C D
And you're still reelin' from the feelin' when he's gone
Am G
The door is closed now, the lock is turned
C G C D
And all the memories and letters have been burned

[Chorus]
G D/F# C D
So when you pick the handsome flower
G D/F# C D
Don't forget the thorn upon the rose
G D/F# C D
It's cut is deep and its scar lasts forever
C G D G
It follows love wherever love goes

Just how we fall, it's hard to know
When what we feel we seldom sho - ow
So we show the parts we feel are best
We squirm around the edges tryin' to cover up the rest
And you think you know him, and he thinks the same
When underneath it all it's just a crazy guessing game

[repeat chorus]

Win or lose, it's just the same
Tears of joy, tears of pain
They're hand in hand, they come as one
You'll never see the moon without the promise of the sun
For all the bruises, for all the blows
I'd rather feel the thorn than to never see the rose

[repeat chorus]

Dimming of the Day - Richard Thompson

[As performed by Mary Black on "Babes in the Wood"]

[Capo 3th fret - recorded in F]

D A
This old house is falling down around my ears
G D A
I'm drowning in a river of my tears
D A
When all my will is gone, you hold me sway
G D A D
I need you at the dimming of the day.

Come the night you're only what I want

Come the night you could be my confida

D A
I see you on the streets in company
G D A
Why don't you come and ease your mind with me
D A
Now all the bonnie birds have wheeled away
G D A D
I need you at the dimming of the day

You pull me like the moon pulls on the tide

Columbus - Noel Brazil

[capo 2nd position]

C D C D

E A
Better keep your distance from this whale
E A
Better keep your boat from going astray
C#m
Find yourself a partner and treat them well
E A
Try to give them shelter night and day
G
'Cos here in this blue light
E G
Far away from the fireside
E G D
Things can get twisted and crazy and crowded
Em
You can't even feel right

[Chorus]
C
So you dream of Columbus
D
Every time the panic starts
C
You dream of Columbus
D
With your maps and your beautiful charts
Em
You dream of Columbus
G D
With an ache in your travelling heart

A C#m
See how the cormorant swoops and dives
E A
Must be some thrill to go that deep
C#m
Down to the basement of this life
E A
Down to where the mermaid gently sleeps
G
Not like here in this blue light
E G
Far away from the fireside
E G D
Where things can get twisted and haunted and crowded
Em
You can't even feel alright

Em D
And as tide must ebb and flow
Am Em
I am dragged down under
C D
And I wait the livelong day
Am Em
For and end to my hunger

C
So I dream of Columbus
D
Every time that the panic starts
C
I dream of Columbus
D
With my maps and my beautiful charts
Em
I dream of Columbus
G D
And there's peace in a travelling heart

C
I dream of Columbus...

[Repeat C and D chorus pattern]

Never be the Sun - .... Long

[As performed by Dolores Keane on "Solid Ground"]

|: C F G :| 2x
C F
You'll never be the sun,
G Am F
Turning in the sky,
G C F
And you won't be the moon above us,
G Am F
On the moonlit night,
G C F
And you won't be the stars in heaven,
G Am F
Although they burn so bright,
G C F
But even on the deepest ocean,
G C G
you will be the light.

C F
You may not always shine as you go,
G Am F
Barefoot over stone (?),
G C F
You might be so long together,
G Am F
Or you might walk alone,
G C F
And you won't find that love comes easy,
G Am F
But love is always right,
G C F
So even when the dark clouds gather,
G C
You will be the light.

[Break]
G
And if you loose the part in sight (?),
C
When love turns round on you,
G E
Leaving the past behind,
F G Am
Is knowing you'll do, like you always do,
Dm F G
Holding you blind, keeping you true.

repeat 1. verse, last line 2x

Nothing to Show - Kieran Halpin

[As performed by Dolores Keane on "Solid Ground"]

|: G D :| 2x
G D Em D/F#
I've been too long away from your loving,
C D G D
Too long my back to the wall,
G D Em D/F#
I've been to some far away places,
C D G D
And nothing to show for it all.

CHORUS
G D Em
And I've been too long away from this country,
C D G D
Too long not heeding your call,
G D Em D/F#
Now I'm home, like some war-weary soldier,
C D G D
With nothing to show for it all.

And I've been to their sights and showcases,
I've been through their strong city halls,
Men with black suits and no faces,
And nothing to show for it all.

And I've heard all the stories they tell ye,
Though some I can barely recall,
It's hard when the tide turns against ye,
And it's all you can do not to fall.

And I've taken the jive and the jester,
And laughed at the joke through it all,
He said: "Get back to the place where you came from.",
And you've nothing to give after all.

Last Chorus:
And I've been too long away from this country,
Too long not heeding your call,
Breathe easy, there's someone there waiting,
Someone who cares after all,
Breathe easy, there's someone there waiting,
Someone who cares after all.

For the Mary Black songs you will still have to listen closely to the
records, since you need to approach her sense of timing to make the songs
work out nicely. The Dolores Keane songs are lots simples, but nice anyway.

That it for now. I'll send some more next week, but there's a limit to
what you can type in in one evening without making lots of mistakes
(did I miss any ?), and I think today I should stop here.
