In the song "These Coal Town Days" on the "Bede Weeps" CD by Jez Lowe and
the Bad Pennies, what are they chanting? The lyrics are in the CD booklet,
but don't include those words. It sounds like it starts off "How will a
man..."
Any recommendations for other Jez Lowe albums?

I just listened about 10 times and I'll suggest -

Highwaymen, they're liars and they're cheats...

The "highwaymen" could be something totally different as it is very
indistinct. Unfortunately Jez doesn't have an e-mail address...

As to other of Jez's albums - there are many as he has been touring Great
Britain for many years. I felt "Tenterhooks" the bands newest release is a
bit over produced and feel that "Bede Weeps" is the best with the Bad
Pennies. My next favorites are his earlier releases - "Bad Penny" is a good
one. However I have seen Jez several times now, the latest was in November,
and you won't go wrong with anything you can find by him. He is an
exceptional songwriter...

It's "Howay (sp?), man, they're liars and they're cheats." It's some
kind of local expression from Jez's area.

Jez's stuff is just about ALL wonderful, but you should try "Bad Penny"
(or "Galloways" for earlier material). There's a new one due out in
about a month!

Also "Back Shift", if you want a collection of stuff done at different
points in his career. "Galloways" and the earlier stuff have more of
the local Durham sound than Jez's later albums. A lot of his tunes
are rants and clog hornpipes from Durham and the surrounding counties.

In fact, Durham Jail is such a kick-ass hornpipe, that I like to freak
people out by stepdancing between the verses while I'm singing it. ;}

A friend of mine who has spent time with Jez Lowe reports that "highwaymen"
is actually "Howay, man!"

The line is what Lowe's father said on hearing that the mines were
closing.

My friend reads "Howay, man" as a resigned "Jesus, mate!
That's the way it goes / What did you expect?"

"Howay, man!" is normally used to mean "Come along" or "Hurry up"

I think in this instance "Howay, man - they're all liars and cheats" is
interpreted as "Come away, man, because they are all liars and cheats".
Basically "Don't believe the politicians who tell you that your industry
has a future, or that they will look after you after any closures.
