I'm looking for info on a singer named Noirin Ni Riain. Has anyone
out there heard of her?

I've got one of her albums, "Celtic Soul." Unfortunately, it just
wasn't my taste. Let me know if you're interested.

I bought her CD, Celtic Soul. Nice, but not up to the calibur of Enya or
Lorena McKinnett. Uillieann pipes are featured in a number or two.

Noirin is the wife of noted Irish musician and musicologist Micheal O
Suilleabhain, and gets gigs and recordings largely (if not exclusively)
through this connection. I have heard some recorded material and live
recordings, and in my educated professional opinion the poor woman can't
sing to save her life. Poor pitch, wobbly vibrato, questionable taste...

Micheal is too good a musician to be unaware of how bad she is, so I am
impressed at his selflessness in helping her out. If I were him I'd be
encouraging her to stay at home with the kids, or take up painting, or go
into politics, or anything less embarrassing.

Just my own opinion -- your mileage may vary.

The only time she's off-pitch is when doing classical stuff which, as we
all know, is written to be sung off-pitch (as in some of the stuff on her 3rd
album with the Monks of Glenstal), & even with that she corrects it to as
close to on-pitch as she can under the circumstances, a very laudable trait.
The non-classical stuff I've heard (most of the 3 albums with the
aforementioned Monks, 1 live concert) features a slight European-style
(sounds kind of French, actually, in style; her accent along with herself,
is Irish) vibrato, but its a folky, late-in-the-note type, not a
classical-style forced-air-machine tremelo-&-wobble, & also features about the
only successful blend of Irish ornamentation with that particular
middle-European singing style I've ever heard. As for her taste; well,
she gets to choose. I like some of it better than other of it. I think she's
stretching it with the Indian stuff; she doesn't know quite enough about
*those* styles as perhaps she thinks she does. I bought the albums with the
most of the stuff I had heard in concert that I liked on them. I'd recommend
"Good People All", the one featuring the Kilmore Carols from Wexford,
as the one with probably the most general appeal of the 3.

Since you cite your opinion as though it had some credentials attached to it,
in exactly what profession *are* you educated?

I have heard of her.....I have one of her CD's, but I am not at home at
the moment and I do not remember the exact title of it. It is beautifully
stirring music. I recommend her to anyone.

I have her CD "Soundings (with the Irish Chamber Orchestra)", and
it is very good. I tend to think of her music as more medieval
than pure folk, but it is worth a listen to anyone.
