A friend of mine (Sandy Davis) says that Skip Healy has just finished
making an amazing and extremely promising prototype of a new simple-system
wooden flute that he will be manufacturing. The headjoint was designed
with the help of Chris Abell of Asheville, NC, who taught Skip how to make
fifes and is a master maker/designer of Boehm-system wooden flutes and
wooden whistles.

Skip was playing his new flute yesterday at the session at Coffee Tea and
Melody in Stow, Massachusetts, and by all accounts the instrument is a
screamer -- which is what one would expect from Skip! The prototype is
keyless; Skip expects to make an innovative keyed flute (that can be
fitted with a C or B foot) joint in the near future.

According to Sandy, Skip will probably sell the keyless model for about
$800; the keyed flute will be around $3500 (pretty steep, if you ask me,
but it might well be worth it). For information, contact Skip at the
following address:

And please tell him you heard about his new flute from me -- maybe if he
gets enough orders he'll give me a discount on a new flute!
