HARP

Celtic Harp: The instructor will compare Irish, Scottish, and Welsh harp
music and teach tunes to illustrate. Irish jigs, hornpipes, maybe a
reel, Scottish strathspeys and marches, and Welsh airs will be
discussed, as well as appropriate ways of arranging them. Ornaments will
be added. Ability to read music is helpful but not necessary, as most
tunes will be taught aurally before music is given out. Open to anyone
who has played for six months or more. 2 periods, Sue Richards

Sue Richards: Sue specializes in the traditional harp music of Ireland,
Scotland and Wales. She is a four-time winner of the American National
Scottish Harp Championship, and has served as president of the Scottish
Harp Society of America and the Washington, DC Folk Harp Society. She
is a popular teacher and adjudicator around the country and she also
performs with the Ceoltoiri Irish Band and Ensemble Galilei. She
believes that music exists for sharing and will happily pack into a
dark pub session with a roomful of fiddlers and pipers. Sue’s playing
can be heard on dozens of recordings including her solo albums,
Grey-Eyed Morn, Morning Aire and Hazel Grove.

Technique & Composition: This folk harp class will focus on basic harp
technique and music theory using traditional tunes to teach how the
music works. The class will work on building repertoire while
emphasizing melody and harmony playing. How to come up with original
arrangements will be taught, as well as improvisation and composition.
This class is open to all levels. Beginning students may arrange for
individual sessions with the instructor, and rental instruments may be
available. 2 periods, Jay Ansill

Jay Ansill: Jay’s music is firmly rooted in the traditions of the US,
UK and Ireland, but combines elements of classical music, jazz and rock
- music that is very modern yet strikes directly at the ancient heart of
music. Recent recordings reflect his compositional gifts as well as his
artistic link to literature of the 20th Century. The folk Harp Journal
says that "Jay has created a new language for the Celtic Harp."

OVERVIEW OF THE WEEK
July 6 - 11, 1997
Every summer, Common Ground offers a week of courses, activities and
performances. Most participants choose to enroll in the full program,
entitling them to partake of any and all courses, activities and
concerts. However, if you live nearby, you may wish to enroll in a
limited number of courses and select to attend individual events. We
encourage families to attend Common Ground, as there is an extensive
children's curriculum, "World Village."

If you choose to enroll in the full resident program, you will arrive on
Sunday afternoon at the picturesque Western Maryland College campus in
Westminster, Md. This day is devoted to getting settled and meeting
people. The only structure for Sunday is a dinner meal and a short
orientation followed by informal gatherings. Resident and non-resident
students should attend the orientation and are encouraged to enjoy the
evening. Feel free to join in the activities that will spring up in a
number of places on campus: the front steps of Baker Memorial Chapel,
Red Square, Little Baker Chapel, and the Pub, to name a few.

Monday July 7th is the first day of classes. Early risers may wish to
join the Joy Breath workshop at 7:00 am. Breakfast starts at 8:00 am.
Classes start at 9:00 am. Class periods are one-hour-and-fifteen
minutes long; courses consist of one or two periods each. (see
centerfold schedule). There is a lunch break between noon and 1:00 PM
during which time informal mini-concerts will take place. In the late
afternoon, attend mini courses, jam, practice, or rest, as you are so
inclined. After dinner, sing or play in the Community Gospel Choir &
Orchestra from 6:45 - 8:00 PM. Each evening will include a special
event, including grand concerts, cabarets, dances and open-mikes.
Dormitory rooms must be vacated on Saturday morning, July12th.

Class Information

The classes take place at various sites around the Western Maryland
College campus. Students are to create their own curriculum from any of
the classes offered for the week. You may wish to follow a certain
track of related courses or perhaps you will opt to select an extremely
varied curriculum. Class selections are required for registration.
Some classes have a maximum enrollment limit, and registration is on a
first-come first-served basis. We strongly urge you to enroll early
before class limits are reached.

Fees:

Tuition

For RESIDENT students, comprehensive tuition (which includes all classes
and events) is $325. For NON-RESIDENT students, tuition for classes is
as follows: $115 for 1 period, $200 for 2 periods (be aware that some
classes are 2 periods in length), $270 for 3 periods, $325 for
comprehensive tuition (which includes all classes and events). Some
art classes will include an extra materials fee which will be payable
upon your registration on campus. The children's program is $150 for
one child, $100 for the second. Child care for children under five is
not the responsibility of Common Ground, but we will try to help you
find care which you will contract at an hourly rate. Non-Students who
accompany students pay a $50 activities fee.

Housing & Meals
Dormitory housing with cafeteria-style meals is $175 for the week,
rooms are double occupancy, two beds to a room. Families may wish to
sleep more than 2 to a room, however, full housing fees apply per
individual. Meals commence with a Sunday evening dinner. (vegetarian
meals are available*) Monday - Friday there are three meals per day, and
the final meal is breakfast on Saturday morning. Children 2 and under
eat free.

*Those with special needs should include a detailed, written description
of those needs with their registration materials..

Registration
Processing fees, due upon registration are $50.00 for tuition and $35.00
for room and board. Processing fees are nonrefundable and are applied to
total fee amount. Balances are due by June 10th. Western Maryland

This summer, The House Band, Celtic Thunder, Kevin Burke, Gearoid
O'hAllmhurain, Mary Bergin, dancer Patrick O'Dea and many more will be
appearing at the Trad Fest on July 19 in East Durham, NY. If you're
interested in taking a workshop, you can register for the day or for the
week (Arts Week July 14-18) just before the Fest. The amazing Ged Foley
of the House Band will teach Guitar, Kevin Burke, Brian Conway and Willie
Kelly teach Fiddle, etc. Durham is a quaint Irish village in the
Catskills--lots of Irish pubs, nightly concerts and a children's program
too. Check out their web site - www.east-durham.org for more info.
