I seem to recall that Rego Records (800-854-3746) has this type of
music.

I've also got an LP at home featuring the Flanagan Brothers, as well as
several other older tracks. I'll look it up and post the info.

Harry Bradshaw has engineered the reissue of some of these players.
Harry is at the Trad. Irish Music Archives in Dublin. The reissues
are on the Viva Voce label, and are probably available from The
House of Musical Traditions. The ones in my collection are:

Michael Coleman 1891-1945, Viva Voce 004
Packie Dolan: The Forgotten Fiddle Player of the 1920s, Viva Voce 006
James Morrison, The Professor, Viva Voce 001
The Flanagan Brothers: The tunes we like to play on Paddy's Day,
Viva Voce 007

I also just got a CD that has the reissue of several older players
including the ones above, but also several Ceili bands and other
stuff. Don't have the details with me, but got it from HMT. Its
not on Viva Voce. Maybe someone (at HMT or on the Net) will know the
label and number.

It's titled "Irish Dance Music", edited by Reg Hall. Its on the Topic
label. I got mine through the House of Musical Traditions, though
had to wait a couple of weeks for it to get imported.

OK, the album I was thinking of is titled "Irish American Dance Music
And Songs", subtitled "Early Recordings from the late 1920's". It
features Frank Quinn, Sullivan's Shamrock Band, John McKenna & James
Morrison, Pat White, John Griffin, the Flanagan Brothers and the Patrick
Killoran Orchestra (that's Paddy to you & me :)

A lot of tunes, some solos & duets, some "big Irish bands" of the
period, and some songs, both traditional and Tin Pan Alley type.

I have it in LP format. It was issued on the Folklyric label (LP #
9010) by Arhoolie Records (10341 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito, CA 94530
USA, Phone: 510-525-7471, Fax: 510-525-1204, ma...@arhoolie.com). I
found Arhoolie's web page, conveniently located at

http://www.arhoolie.com

but the link to Folklyric (if it was a link) wasn't operating, and I
couldn't turn up that title at the site. I admit, there where a couple
nooks & crannies of the site that I didn't get into. I've dispatched a
message to the mailto: address on the web page, but perhaps somebody
else is aware of the availability of this and/or other recordings.

Hope this helps!

I'm joining the threaad late, so I don't know if this has already been
mentioned. Viva Voce has a great Flanagan Brothers CD, a Packie Dolan
CD, as well as cassettes of music by John McKenna, Michael Coleman,
James Morrison and others. You can get details from their web site:

http://www.musweb.com/VivaVoce.htm

(Special thanks to Mick Moloney, Tommy Sands, Winnie Horan, and Seamus
Egan, who gave these gems equal space to their own CDs on their tour
last fall.)

Me too: I was out of town for a few days and missed a bunch of messages
on this newsgroup, but if it hasn't been mentioned already... the Yazoo
division of Shanachie Records has a new double-CD set called "The
Wheels of the World: Early Irish-American Music" featuring Michael
Coleman, the Flanagan Brothers, Packie Dolan, James Morrison, Patrick
Touhey, and others. It's a fairly comprehensive collection of fiddle
and accordion material that was originally issued on 78 RPM records in
the 1920s and 1930s.

Curious about whether this was available, I posted a query to Philippe
Varlet, who is renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of Irish Music in
general and old Irish music in particular. He confirmed that the album
listed above is no longer in print, and sent this list along:

Hope this helps! I know I'm looking into a few of these albums.

Doesn't quite fit the parameters in terms of "Old recordings", but John
Hartford's latest on the Rounder label includes some very tasty Irish
fiddle tunes and arrangements that were brought to the U.S. prior to the
unflailing attempts at bastardization (sp?) of these tunes to make them
"proper" to the ears of the church and state.

He obviously went to great lengths to put this collection together, so
IMHO, it's well worth a listen. As Roy Book Binder would say, "It just
tickled my ear."

All the Best,
Kyle
