I have Mary Black's "No Frontiers," of which I'm very fond.
I'd love to get to know her traditional stuff. Which albums
do you recommend? Thanks very much.

I have a copy of a tape with Mary Black as the singer in a group called
General Humbert. I've never seen the album, and suspect it has gone
out of print. It is more traditional material than she does on "No
Frontiers". She also is the singer on at least one of De Dannan's
albums. I think the General Humbert material is the best I've heard of
her.

Try "Collected" - its a collection of some of her early stuff with De
Dannan. Also her self-titled album has several more traditional cuts.

If you like "No Frontiers" then you should also check out her later works
also. "Babes in the Woods" is my personal favorite.

Enjoy!

Bronwen -

As already suggested, pick up her earlier albums, self titled and Collected.
"By the Time It Gets Dark" (planned fall 1994 release in the US on GiftHorse)
includes a mix of contemporary (Pat Alger among others) and other tunes with
a traditional sound as well.

For an overview of some of her newer direction, you might want to track
down the import of "collection", which covers songs from "by the time it
gets dark" through 'Babes In the Wood"

As to her earlier work, she recorded 2 albums with the group General
Humbert, both of which were issued on cassette and aone of which is
currently out of print (GENERAL HUMBERT II - 1975 - on Gael Linn).
The first (1975) GENERAL HUMBERT, is still available in Ireland on
Dolphin (DOLC 5015), cassette only. BUT Clo Iar-Chonnachta label out of
Connemara has put out a compilation album titled "A Woman's Love / Pluirin
na mBon" (ICD 091) which includes two of Mary's tracks from GENERAL HUMBERT
II - Fare The Well, my Own True Love and Amhran Pheter Baille. And,
"Collected" also contains "Saint Helena" and "Mo Ghile Mear" from the
same GH II album. (I can't tell from the cassette label but believe that
is the total of Mary's vocals on the album).

For obsessive-completism, there is an out-of-print vinyl album compiled
from Christy Moore's television series on the RTE back in the 1980s
that includes a single track by Mary singing "Anachie Gordon" (a
different version than appears on her self=-titled album)

As to De Danann, Mary's vocals appear on two of them in particular:
"Song For Ireland" (1983) and "Anthem (1985). The latter includes vocals/
appearances by Maura O'Connell and Dolores Keane as well.

Finally to expand your shopping list more, you may want to track down the
2 albums she recorded with her brothers & sister, although the first
"The Black Family" is the only one that really features her as an equal
vocalist; she does backing vocals on "Time For Touching Home". These
feature a mix of traditional and more contemporary material.

Course, I'm sufficiently addicted that I can listen to her interpret'
pretty much anything; I'm currently enthralled by her cover of Billie
Holiday's "Don't Explain" on her new EP, "Saw You Running".

Carolyn
can...@mcs.net

P.S. e-mail me if you need label & other info; I have a sort of
discography 'work in progress' that I'm trying to annotate to include
her backing vocal appearances and the tracks from the GH & Christy Moore
albums on which she appears.

If you can, get the "General Humbert" album. Supposedly there are 2, since
the one that most people know about is called "General Humbert II", but
no-one seems to have ever seen the first one.
More realistic option is to look for "Collected", which is available on CD.

That's good news. I've found that "By the Time It Gets Dark" to be one
of her more difficult albums to find. It's also a very good album. To
elaborate a bit, her self titled album *is* a bit more traditional sounding
and contains a version of "Anachie Gordon". It is less polished than
later releases and, IMHO, not as strong overall. It is, however, pretty
easy to find. The album after "By the Time it Gets Dark" is "Without
The Fanfare". I love this album and the title cut is worth it's purchase
alone. I think that "Collected" is probably one of the best albums for
a good representation of her more traditional material. It also contains
two songs which are also found on the De Danann album. There is one
additional song, however on the De Dannan abum that does not appear on
"Collected" but it *does* contain "Song For Ireland". I think that no
Mary Black collection is complete without that song.

>For an overview of some of her newer direction, you might want to track

I also think that "The Holy Ground", her most recent release, is a
worthwhile purchase. It contains some of her worst pop stuff but the
more tradional songs are quite nice.

Are you sure you don't have those switched. I remember a really awful
song with Maura O'Connell on vocals from the "Song For Ireland" album.

I've been trying to find "The Black Family" album for quite awhile. Any
pointers? To ever further expand the shopping list, the albums which
feature her sister, Francis Black, are worth looking into. The Arkady
album and the collaboration that she does with Kiernan Goss are both
good mixes of traditional and contempoary material.

If you come up with a source for the Black Family albums, PLEASE let me know!!

I picked The Black Family up on CD in Dublin three or four years ago and
enjoyed it immensely, but my entire CD collection got stolen and I haven't
been able to find another copy anywhere in the US (and I haven't been able
to afford to go back to Ireland to look for it, either :-< ) .

Thanks.

I see you're from Pleasanton. Go into the Plough and Stars, on Clement
Street in San Francisco, on a Thursday night, and you'll probably find
Michael Black there (you might call them to ask, first). If this doesn't
work, send me an e-mail.

The album's brilliant.

Yes, tho I enjoy the songs that Frances alone does on the FB/KG album more.
And don't like the really 'poppy' arrangements of a couple. Frances' new
album is quite nice, tho a mix of Nanci Griffith, Vince Gill, Lennon (again),
Mark Nevin (of Fairground Attraction), and several other contemporary
Irish songwriters. (are you going to be able to catch her on her tour
here at the end of October/early November??)

Re: Black Family
I just saw it at the local Irish import giftshop, Joy Of Ireland, yesterday.
Kinda pricey, but comparable to what Rose Records gets it in for. Also,
Devine Celtic Sounds in Arizona has both listed in their lastest catalog,
for $20 apiece. You can e-mail Sly...@aol.com directly, or phone them.

Yes, definitely. Tho not saying it is anywhere near the same as "Song For

as in listening a lot to the lyrics and trying to not visualize Dionne
Warwick ....

New EP: "Saw You Running" DARA CDS061. Contains 4 tracks:
- "Saw You Running" (Thom Moore) - they did it on their tour here this
past summer
- "If I Gave My Heart To You" (Jimmy Chi), harmonies with Shane Howard
(writer of Flesh & Blood)
- "Another Day" (Live)
- "Don't Explain" (Live) <-- I've since found out that this was taped
at her Cork Opera House performance in 1993.

Yes, it is an 'advance' on the issue by Dara of the 2nd women artiste's
compilation, "A Woman'e Heart 2" (DARA CD 063). 3 of the 4 songs are
included on this compilation (not "Another Day"). But my review of that
has to be a seaparate message; I've only listened to it twice since I
got it Tuesday night. Um, also "Don't Explain" is to be the bonus track
at the end of "By the Time It Gets Dark", in addition to the current
(your favourite <grin> "Moon River" which appears on the Dara & GrapeVine
as a bonus)

Cheers!

Dave -

When my house was burglarized this past spring, I was incredibly lucky!
I had my 'frequent listening' material (including autographed stuff) in
a stack on the cabinet. The kids just grabbed down the denter of my
CD shelves. It would have netted them my entire "Black" section, except
that was part of the stack on the cabinet!

But two odd things - the burglary was on 3/16 <grin>. And, while at
Mary Black's show here in June, one of the women at my table had a similar
problem to yours - she had picked up "By the Time It Gets Dark" while in
Ireland, but lost it in a burglary - and was trying to track swon a copy!

Hope you've seen the several pointers to sources posted thus far.

Agreed. I prefer the version on "Collection" to the one on "Collected"
as well.

Hmmm. "Flesh & Blood" is one song on that album that I can't stand. The
opening cut is also non-traditional but I like it quite a bit. Go figure.
The two different songs called "The Holy Ground" (one credited as
traditional) are very nice though.

OK, now I'm confused. The De Dannan album called "Song For Ireland" that
I used to have definately had the title cut and the "Barney" song and I
seem to recall Dolores Keane on it as well. I thought Mary Black did
"Hard Times" and "Live not where you Love" on that album.

I don't think so. I'm seeing Cheryl Wheeler this weekend and would like
to see "McCarthy and Swarbrick" later in the month, both at the Freight
and Salvage in Berkeley. On top of that, Renaissances "Scheherazade"
and "Turn of the Cards" are *finally* going to be released in a few days
(on Import, and not those Japanese bootleg versions) and I've already
ordered them. I'm already taxing my music budget this month.

Few points:

1) Yes, Frances Black's new solo album/CD is quite nice, described well
earlier. Hard to find domestically, I picked it up in Dublin on a
business trip earlier

2) There is a limited edition CD/Video package for 'The Holy Ground.' I
picked up a copy at a MA record store. The video has 4 or 5 songs from
what I _think_ is the "Collection Live" video (not yet available on
NTSC VHS ?)

3) The live _Anachie Gordon_ mentioned earlier is from an album, I believe
on
DARA, called "Christy Moore And Friends." Can't remember the other
'friends'
are on it.

4) Lastly, let's not forget the _Bringing It All Back Home_ soundtrack (2CD
set), which includes Mary, Dolores Keane, and Emmylou Harris trio'ing
for
2 songs ("Sonny" and "Gray Funnel Line"), and a live version of "No
Frontiers."

My few cents.....

Uhhhhmmm...nope. It's a record store in Massachusetts..... :)

Whilst in Ireland a few weeks ago, I managed to pick up the new Mary ep and
the Frances solo CD, but I couldn't find the video anywhere (even in PAL
format so I would have to convert it). Two of the stores I asked about it
said they were 'out,' mentioning NOTHING about it being out-of-print.
Hmmmmmmm......

And, as I mentioned, I'm not 100% sure the video I have is PART of the
"Collection Live" video, only that it IS a selection if trax from another
video.
I'm ASSUMING that "Collection Live" is her only video, thus I'm also
assuming what I have is the subset of that....I hope I haven't confused

A friend of mine in Athlone, County Westmeath mentioned to me a bit earlier
this year that the 1 hour edited video of her 1992 Royal Albert Hall show
had just been shown on local television, and was then available on
commercial video. I got a copy as broadcast on the BBC from a friend in
England, but it is definitely concert footage (albeit rearranged and
truncated). And different from her 'the collection' video. So there are
at least 3 commercial videotapes with Mary Black material on them that I
know of over here. (now I've confused myself!)

: Re: The new Mary Black ep w/"Saw You Running." I thought only 2 of the 4

Well, Dara definitely footnotes the "Don't Explain" live track as "bonus
live track". And it does up her contributions to 3 tracks, while most of
the other 'major' artistes only have 2 tracks. Plus, it is probably the
track that pushes the compilation over 60 minutes. So your understanding
is probably their original intent. (oh - and "Don't Explain" is also the
only live track on the album - altho there are other previously unreleased
tracks, tho Frances Black's non-album track has now been released on
an EP together with an unaccompanied track that she has included on a new
benefit album for a battered women's shelter)

Yes, but if you can find Mary Black's "Collected" (not to be
confused wih "Mary Black: the Collection") on vinyl LP,
you should acquire that as the tracks are significantly
different compared to the CD -- in particular the LP has
a much superior live version of "Anachie Gordon".

confuse you. :) Honest.

This could be. On the other hand, I also thought it had
some duplicate material from the Black Family recordings
such as "Will Ye Gang".

Yes. Yes. There is a live Anachie Gordon on the
vinyl version of "Collected". Or at least, on some vinyl
versions of "Collected".

It is a live version, but I will have to give things a listen
before I can say if it's the same as the one on the
Christy Moore thingie.

I'll give that a shot sometime soon.

Now you have me confused again. I thought the original issue of "Collected"

(which I admit I don't have) had 3 of her 4 songs from the GENERAL HUMBERT II
album, the 3 songs with her vocals from DeDanann's SONG FOR IRELAND album
(and that she rerecorded "Song For Ireland" for the CD release of COLLECTED),

and the 4 songs recorded in 1988. Was "Anachie Gordon" another track on the
original release? (was it the RTE/Christy Moore & Friends live version,
rather than the version recorded for her self-titled album??) Wondering
cause I can only think of those two places for her interpretations of that
song. But am always open to more <s>.

Actually, could you post the differing track lists? And - aren't there at
least 3 of her albums which have differing tracks? the self-titled, the
"Collected" and the Grape vs. Dara versions of "collection"?
