What a question!!

There are so many possibilities. For instance, for traditional-style
Celtic music, I'd recommend Silly Wizard's "Live Wizardry," the
Tannahill Weavers' "Cullen Bay" and "Dancing Feet," and pretty much
anything by Dervish, Deanta and a host of others.

For more of a "plugged" sound, a la Wolfstone and Runrig, then I'd
suggest More Power to Your Elbow, Fairport Convention, Leahy, the Oyster
Band, Tempest, etc.

The list could go on and on.

My top two recommendations (note these are more traditional than Wolfstone
or Runrig) would be Silly Wizard and The Old Blind Dogs. Hope that helps!

I'd suggest "Crosswinds" and "Sidewaulk" and "Cascade" by Capercaillie
as well as anything by Sileas. You might also like "An unfair dance" by
Ceolbeg.

Check out GREENTRAX RECORDINGS - some 150 or so albums
in the catalogue including Dick Gaughan, Sileas, Deaf
Shepherd, Burach, McCalmans, Eric Bogle, along with
fiddlers, pipers, accordionists, Gaelic singers -
"the lot", in other words.

Also, Lismor Records springs to mind. And Lapwing.
Surf for Capercaillie, Silly Wizard too.

I am certain all of the artists listed are good examples of Scottish
folksong. Of those mentioned almost everyone agrees that Dick Gaughan
is an immense talent. Besides Gaughan I also very much enjoy
Jean Redpath, Heather Heywood and Sheena Wellington. They all
sing a fair number of Child ballads along with some fine lyric songs.

Just wanted to say, I saw Capercaillie in Cambridge (England) last
night. They were brilliant! The last couple of times I heard them, I
thought they'd lost the place a bit, but they're right back on top form
now that they have a new player (Malcolm McGoldrick I think - apologies
if I've got that wrong) on flute, whistle and Uillean pipes. They also
brought along the two women from Sibeba - that was an inspired move! See
them if you can... their current tour is coming to an end, but I'm sure
they'll be on the road again shortly.

Cheers,
Colin.

Ossian is great. I discovered them by complete chance when I bought an album
of theirs in London, on the grounds that it had a single Robbie Burns song
I liked (Corn Rigs are Bonny). They need a really good US distributor, though.
