Does anyone have a discography of Dougie MacLean's recent albums (about 1984 to
present) that includes the song titles for each album. I would be much obliged
for such a list, even if somewhat incomplete.

Thanks.

TITLE: MARCHING MYSTERY

'MARCHING MYSTERY' by DOUGIE MACLEAN. (Cass-DUNCD019/CD-DUNCD019) Release
in summer 1994, is his most recent recording. All tracks are written by
Dougie. This was the basis for his recent Marching Mystery Tour. It is
another superb album with many thought provoking songs on it.

People Speak; Expectation

TITLE: SUNSET SONG

'SUNSET SONG' by DOUGIE MACLEAN (Cass-DUNCD017/CD-DUNCD017)

Lewis Classic Gribbon's trilogy "A scots Quair" was the inspiration for
the music of this album. Dougie MacLean was invited to be composer and
musical director for TAG Theatre Company's production during 1993. This
album is a reworking of instrumental musical themes that evolved during
the production.

Sunset Song; The Burning of Peesie's Knapp; The Kinraddie Scythe; Cloud
Howe; Cirrus/The Eviction; The Bridge Incident; The Kaimes; Grey Granite;
Distress

TITLE: "The Dougie MaCLean Collection"
To coincide with his upcoming tour of the USA in April and May, Dougie is
releasing a compilation album called "The Dougie MaCLean Collection" in
the States. There is no word of what tracks are on it or whether it will
be available here at any time (even as an import).

TITLE: New Album in the UK
Prior to setting up Dunkeld Records, Dougie recorded several solo albums
in the late 70's and early 80's. These were called Caledonia, Snaigow, On
a wing and a Prayer and Butterstone.

Butterstone is now available again as a CD on a different label (Dambuster
Records DAMCD002) but as far as I know the others have been deleted.

Dunkeld has unsuccessfully tried to buy the rights to these recordings
back. As this has not been possible Dougie is intending to re-recording
his personal favourite old songs from these albums along with a couple of
unreleased early songs. The album will possibly be simply called EARLY.

Great information, Alasdair; thanks for the mailing list, too!

By the way, when I saw the above, I figured I had to relate how
pleasantly surprised I was to find a cover of "Solid Ground" by
Dolores Keane on "A Woman's Heart 2" from Dara. She does a fine
job of it. I also noticed that Deanta's debut record for Green
Linnet was titled "Ready For The Storm" because they cover that
Dougie song. What other covers are there of Dougie's songs?
How are they?

Sounds like it's time to dig out the results of the Caledonia thread from
about 1 1/2 years ago. Did anybody save it? As I recall, it started
with a discussion of Dolores Keane's cover of the song on "A Woman's
Heart".

From my personal collection, I think that David Maloney does a dynamite
cover of Caledonia on his 1985 album "Listen to the Pipes". I like
Dolores Keane's cover, as well.

The only covers I know of are Caledonia by Frankie Miller (used in a
Lager advert campaign in Scotland 3/4 years ago) and also Ready for the
Storm by by Kathy Mathea (I haven't heard it, I'm not a great Country
fan).

2 other covers I've thought of are:

"Caledonia" by Ed Miller on "Scottish Voice" (Wellfield Records, 1993)
and "Buffalo Jump" by Pierce Pettis - I don't know which album. I
haven't heard the Pierce Pettis album, but surprised a friend
one day when I had Dougie's version playing; my friend had assumed
that Pierce Pettis had written the song!

Also, Cindy Callet, Michael Epstein, and Ellen Ciccone (Boston-area) cover
"Ready for the Storm" very nicely.

Although "Gloomy Winter's Now Awa" was written by Robert Tannahill, it's
been recorded by the Tannahill Weavers, as well as Dougie. And though I
don't believe she has released a recording of it yet, Maryland's Grace
Griffith does a *drop-dead gorgeous* version of this. I heard her and
Zan McLeod perform it at the Folk Alliance Conference in Boston last year.
Let's hope she puts out another cd (for more info, write c/o Connemara,
1710 Bryan Point Rd., Accokeek, MD 20607).

And don't let the "country" moniker fool you: Kathy Mattea's got heart,
soul and a lot of class. She brought out Dougie as her guest on her
appearnce on TNN's "American Music Shop." And there ain't a folkie
around, I bet, who would argue with her singing of "The Vacant Chair,"
from the cd/video "Songs from Ken Burn's 'Civil War'."

On the sunny side,

Now that I would like to hear, any idea what album it's on.

No offence or criticism was intended of Kathy. If Dougie likes her, she's
good enough for me ;-)

Er, I'm afraid I may have misled you unwittingly :(

I've heard Wolfstone do RftS live a couple of times, but I can't actually find
it on an album. I liked their rendition, which had Stuart Eaglesham singing
rather than Ivan Drever.

Actually Donald, I don't think you misled anyone. In the last few days, I
believe there was a post or a response to this group that mentions *Ready for
the Storm* as a track on one of Wolfstone's earlier (and not easy to find)
releases...either Wolfstone or Wolfstone II.

Hi Alasdair!
Long time-no hear? Hope all is well and looking forward to more Dougie
news! My friends and I are definitely planning on going to that Celtic
Festival in Goderich, ONT in August.
I recently heard covers of Caledonia by Delores Keane and one by Ed
Miller--nothing compares to Dougie!:)
Bright Blessings

Yep, sorry for the delay. There should be some good news soon. I am going
up to Dunkeld to see Dougie tomorrow (Tuesday the 13th) so I will post
any news after that. Hopefully issue #5 of the newsletter will be out
soon too.
