I believe you may find some info here at the Bodhran Page. Barry

Depending on the group and other instruments, you may not need one,
particularly in a small club. On stage however, I use an Audio Technica
clip-on drum mike w/9volt external power supply. Most vocal mikes will work
fine also as long as you hold your drum a steady distance and point the mike
to the inside. Using a separate PA channel, your EQ should be fairly flat.

Hi,

I use a PZM from Tandy (radio shack) mounted on the cross arms inside
the drum. Sounds great and I can walk around while playing.

cheers

Barry, I just checked out the Stanford page you referenced below and got
this message.

The Bodhrán Page
The bodrhan site has moved to
http://ceolas.org/instruments/bodhran/
Please update your bookmarks and links: it would be a huge help if you could
drop a line to the author of the page that sent you here to ask them to
update their link. This page may be removed at any moment, so updating links
is really important.

Thanks!
Gerard Manning

I always use a 414 hyper-cardioid for my drums. It's not a cheap microphone(414$ Canadian),but it's huge diaphragm brings out every tone perfectly.I've tried a few clipons but none of them sounded very good to my ears.

We keep it simple, Shure SM-57. Great sound, low cost, indestructable.

OK, another opinion. I not only work as a sound engineer and owned a commercial
studio facility but also play the bodhran among other things. Here's what I
like to use:
For recording: An AKG D112 on the back side about 4 to 6" from the back side of
the drum AND an AKG414 or Shure SM81 on the front side about 6" away. I usually
roll off a bit of the higher mids and upper frequencys to help eliminate some
of the hand scraping noise on the D112 (back) side. Its' also important to use
the phase reversal on the board in case you get some cancellation at the mics
(good chance there will be some.)

Live: I like using the D112 or a Sennheiser MD421on the back side and that's
it.

It's important to note that two exact models of mics will sound different.
Also, the board will induce it's own sound as will it's EQ.
Audio is a complicated variable and these are only guidelines stemming from
personal experience.

I will typically use an AKG D112 kick drum mic on a sort boom stand. Also,
Shure Beta52, although it has less high end response.
These are tucked in the back fairly close.
If I have the room or want extra response, an SM57 for example on the
front
of the bodhran as well. I have used condensors and Sennheiser 421 mics
for this too.

Usually, the range around 350-450hz needs to be EQ'd down, and the range
around 5khz gets
boosted when using just the single mic. When using two mics, I will leave
the high freq. settings
flat at first, and tweak around to see if it gets better with boost or
not.

Hi Frank. What clip would you use to attack the D112 on to the Bodhran rim?
