you have to buy as imports.
Anyone wanting more details, feel free to write and I'll pass along a

You forgot THE KILLING FIELDS. That is available from Virgin America,
and I see it somewhat frequently.

Throw out your gold teeth and see how they roll;
the answer they reveal: life is unreal.
|(I hate Earthmoving though......)
Why ?
It's true it isn't in the line of his earlier works (TB, Hergest, Omma).
But it certainly isn't in the regular Stock-Aitken-Waterman-line
you get bored to death with nowadays. Try to listen to it some more !
After all, to appreciate Tubular Bells you have to play it over
3 times... (complete version, of course)

However, it also has zero, zilcho, zippo in the way of instrumental
material. I can deal with Crises, Five Miles Out, etc because they
have instrumental tracks and the pop tunes are whimsical, catchy, and
have a very "real" feel to them.
Earthmoving doesn't even have a real drummer, just the Fairlight
playing standard generock patterns I could hear on Debbie Gibson
records. (Not to rag on Debbie Gibson, because I think she's a fine
disco artist. But for an album of Oldfield's to sound right to me,
he oughta at least have real percussion.) The whole album sounds flat;
instead of his usual killer folky riffs and double guitar work, he's
got the guitar sound from Top Gun. Uuuuugh. I'll wait till his next
album, thanks....
(For the record, I don't like side two of Islands at all, either.)
-> Try to listen to it some more ! After all, to appreciate Tubular

Took me twice, though it took years before I really fully understood
it. But it didn't *offend* me the first time I listened to it; it
sounded like there was actual music there instead of bland formulaic
guitar/keyboard/drum machine with pseudoreligious vocals.
And he didn't even really jam out with Belew.
But, to each his own.... if he ever does another side long deal, at
least I can pick up that album and make a tape of that instrumental
track and Wind Chimes.
By the way, I read in "Movers and Shakers" that Oldfield has a video
LP out called "Wind Chimes" from 1988. can someone tell me what tracks
are on it and what it's like?
(This whole discussion really belongs in r.m.misc BUT...)
The Wind Chimes is a video album of all of the tracks from Islands (UK)
and all of his other promo videos tacked to the end (Five Miles Out,
Shine, Pictures in the Dark, Moonlight Shadow)
What's it like? Hard to describe, the Wind Chimes video is a collage of
computer animation and video clips of middle eastern dances. I find it
very enjoyable. The video is available NTSC from Japan and PAL in the
UK. It is on Virgin Video (naturally).
> The Wind Chimes is a video album of all of the tracks from Islands (UK)

Wind Chimes has far from "all" his other promo videos on it -- it's
really just a handful. Off the top of my head, I can remember videos
for Wonderful Land, Guilty, Tubular Bells and Ommadawn (from the
ESSENTIAL MIKE OLDFIELD video, allegedly), and there are undoubtedly a
few more.

The Dancers Laugh.
I think Lazlo is right, there are probably more promo vids. To clear up
some possible confusion, the videos of Guilty, Ommadawn, and Tubular
Bells are live recordings from a concert at Knebworth Festival. Those
three plus some studio interviews make up a 70 minute tape called "The
ESSENTIAL Mike Oldfield" This is also available as a PAL tape in the
UK, I haven't found a Japan release of it. (Again on Virgin)

Actually, I have a copy of the "Guilty" video that came off VH-1's "New
Visions" a couple of years back -- it's animated, with a little bit of
rotoscoping of Mike and the gang. It's sort of goofy, but that's okay
because so is the song. :-)
