Dear friends,
Let me introduce myself. My name is Sergio Augusto. I'm a
singer/composer/guitarrist from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I have recently
moved to the US and am trying to make a go here and get extremely
encouraged when I see the amount of interest in Brazilian music.
I was very good friends with Elis and participated many years in her
life. I was one of the original founders of TRAMA, which has an
interesting story..and took form in my office at my recording studio
SONIMA.
I knew and know the majority of those who played with her...great
musicians. Any information I can add about this great, professional
performer I'd be glad to share.
My style just so you know is Bossa Nova...and I just launched a new CD
in Brazil on the record label Lua Music, a small independent label that
is doing quite well.
I really enjoy to see the input and knowledge you all
have..particularly Daniela Thompson who is so well versed on Brazil and
its music.
Congratulations.
Hope I can be a plus on this great newsgroup.
all my best,
Sergio Augusto

Sergio,

Welcome to you! Many of us here in the U.S. go to desperate extremes
trying to find good, especially live, Brazilian music. The fortunate
among us live in urban centers which attract Brazilian talent. Others
live in "the sticks" and find access to live Brazilian music growing but
still scarce.

We have you settled?

Hello from Toronto, Canada!

I do hope you can make it here too.
We have a growing community of interest in Brazilian and
Latin music here, fostered in part by Jazz-FM's Amanda Martinez's
radio program on Saturday afternoon 4-6 PM. You can access via the Web.

All the best,

Welcome Sergio, we can always use more enthusiasts here. I wish you
luck in Denver and with your recordings. Americans love Bossa Nova,
that's for sure, and I have found that almost any kind of quality
Brazilian music attracts their attention and enthusiasm. Choro for
many years has been growing in popularity here, as it has in Brazil,
and Americans, in part due to evangelists like the people in this
newsgroup, are finding more older MPB artists that they enjoy.

I myself have worked diligently among friends and acquaintances to
promote the names of Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi and Francis Hime among
others, just because they are some of my very favorites. And in the
time it has taken me to type this, there have probably been three
people who have fallen in love with the music of Jobim, an artist whose
influence will have no end.

I've been slowly and steadily pursuing Brazilian music for 30 years, as
both a musician and a listener. Having gone through periods with many
Brazilian musics, (samba, bossa, choro and mpb), I find myself really
attracted to samba-canção. Do you have any recommendations for this
kind of music, artists that you have appreciated, or periods that
you've been interested in?

Gerry,
Wow thanks so much for your input. I can give you some of my personal
recommendations.
I particularly liked Dick Farney who was a personal friend of Sinatra
and recorded a lot of things in English.
But he also has many CD's recorded in Portuguese. He is more modern so
to speak..in harmony etc.
Very pleasant voice. He was a very good friend of mine and absolutely
adored the States. He has passed on.
Also Dolores Duran who I like a lot. She wrote many songs and she was
labeled as writing what we Brazilians call
"fossa"..but she has some beautiful lyrics and melodies. Died very
young.. We're talking here of a time period in
the 40's thru let's say the 60's. Then there's Herivelto Martins who
was married to Dalva de Oliveira. Some recordings of
Nelson Goncalves..but not all. He's samba cancao from the old school as
well as Carlos Garlhardo. Isaurinha Garcia..Araci de Almeida..to
mention a few
there are others but can't think of all now..when I remember I'll let
you know.
And You gave me a great idea..put "what a day this has been, what a
rare mood I'm in.." into Bossa Nova..
Thanks..

Of course I know here compositions, but what do you mean by the word
"fossa"? Is that positive or negative?

This was early in her career when she was in a trio?

To clarify, both these two are old school samba cancao?

Funny you should mention that: I've ALWAYS done Almost Like Being in
Love with a Bossa feel.

In Latin, fossa is a ditch. In anatomy, it's a shallow depression or
hollow. Translate that into a mood, and you'll get the idea. Definitely
not positive.

Sergio said:

And Gerry asked:

Exactly. Trio de Ouro, which Herivelto founded. Dalva and Herivelto
were a couple from 1937 until 1950. From that union came not only "Ave
Maria do Morro" but Pery Ribeiro.

Sergio,

Que prazer ter você aqui neste grupo! As it's been said by others
here, outside of Brazil, Bossa Nova is still highly regarded. When
people here have a chance to listen to your album, they'll testify what
a great singer and songwriter you are. Without spoiling my upcoming
review of your album, let me just say that your swing in "Balansamba"
and vocal phrasing is a joy to hear. Also, your own compositions are a
breath of fresh air. I especially like "Língua do Pê" and its word
play. Congratulations!

Um abraço (do Texas)

Caro Egidio,
Obrigado pela receptividade! Thanks for the welcome! It's a great
pleasure to
be a part of this group and I am surprised daily to see how many people
are interested in Brazilian music and how well versed many are.
Congratulations
to all of the group. Your evaluation of my work encourages me greatly
and
I'd like to thank you for your kind words about my album. Now I'm
REALLY curious
to read your review.
Don't know if I mentioned or not..but "Lingua do Pé" is a play with
words beginning with P as you saw..but I tried to depict life in the
small interior cities of Brazil where I grew up.
Once again um MUITO OBRIGADO! BTW..my album will be the featured album
on
Live webcast: http://www.KZUM.org (Wednesdays 1-3 pm CST) either the
12th of april or the 19th..hosted by Randy Morse who makes a point of
trying to pronouce Portuguese correctly, great guy. I have to confirm
the date.

A hello from France Sergio Augusto, It is really great when the group
becomes larger.
I was wondering if you could help me know more about a singer called Yvette.
I just have one recorded song in which she sings with Edu Lobo (Aleluia) and
I love her voice.
Hope you will feel at home in the newsgroup !

She had an album in 2001 titled "Yvette."

She also does a song on 1992's "Grandes Cantoras Populares."

Aline,
Thanks for welcoming me to the group..really appreciate it.
Coincidentally, Yvette is a VERY GOOD friend of mine. In fact I just
talked to her and told her about your inquiry. She was very flattered.
I'm also going to instruct her how to join the group. Yes she's very
good friends with Edu. She and I are both part of the Bossa Nova in
Sao Paulo. The record "Yvette" was a limited edition. She stills
sings and yes I agree with you she has a beautiful voice.
She and I have done many shows in Sao Paulo over the last years.
Ás you saw I'm living in Denver now. If you want to hear my
work..next Wed., the 12th at 1pm my latest CD will be the featured
album. Host of the show...THE BEST OF BRAZIL is randy morse. Have no
idea what time that would be in France! Anyway if you can listen and
let me know yr impressions.
