I asked this group a few days ago for the names of the people in Ivan
Lins' band. I saw him at the Monterey Jazz Festival last night, and the
festival program lists them, so here they are for those who are
interested:

Zé Carlos, guitar & cavaquinho; Marco Brito, keyboards; Bororo, bass;
Teo Lima, drums; Jaguara Machado, percussion. And Leila Pinheiro, vocals
at the beginning.

As to the lyric part of the subject, I understand that Lins isn't crazy
about the Bergmans' English treatment of "Começar de Novo" ("The
Island"). Can anyone provide the original Portuguese lyric and a literal
English translation? I hear the message is quite different.

Obrigado,

- JRB

The original version was done by Julie Sayres, but Quincy Jones didn't like
it and asked the Bergmans to do a different version. Though I like most
everything the Bergmans write, that song is the exception.

Truly different. Here's a translation from the Ivan Lins' "Juntos" CD:

Começar de Novo Starting Over
(by Ivan Lins & Vitor Martins)

Começar de novo Count on me
E contar comigo To start over again
Vai valer a pena It will be worth the effort
Ter amanhecido For morning to come
Ter me rebelado To have rebelled
Ter me debatido To have struggled
Ter me machucado To have been hurt
Ter sobrevivido To have survived
Ter virado a mesa To have overturned the table
Ter me conhecido To have known me
Ter virado o barco To have rocked the boat
Ter me socorrido To have saved me

Começar de novo Count on me
E contar comigo To start over again
Vai valer a pena It will be worth the effort
Ter amanhecido For morning to come
Sem as tuas garras Without your claws
Sempre tão seguras Forever grasping
Sem o teu fantasma Without your shadow
Sem tua moldura No more disguise
Sem tuas escoras Without your support
Sem o teu domínio Always in control
Sem tuas esporas Without your clutch [literally "spurs"]
Sem o teu fascínio Without your spell

Começar de novo Count on me
E contar comigo To start over again
Vai valer a pena It will be worth the effort
Já ter te esquecido To have already forgotten you
Começar de novo Starting over

Since Julie's lyrics never got used in the original project that Quincy
Jones was producing, Oscar Castro Neves wrote another melody for the
lyrics. I think the song was recorded in one of his CDs. Julie said she
"didn't translate Vitor Martin's lyric," but definitely the spirit is
there. Like other versions she did to Brazilian songs, this is also very
good.

IF THE DANCE IS OVER (by Julie Sayres)

If the dance is over
And the music's ending
Why am I still dancing?
Why am I pretending?

Holding onto memories
Never quite believing
Stubbornly refusing
Cleverly deceiving

Feeling like I'm drowning
Only you can save me
Living for a promise
That you never gave me.

If the dance is over
And the music's ending
Why am I still dancing?
Why am I pretending?

Dreaming that I'll hold you
In my arms forever
As I hear you saying
Nothing lasts forever

Still I can't stop hoping
Waiting for the next dance
Listening for the music
Striking up the romance

If the dance is over
And the music's ending
Why am I still dancing?
Why am I pretending?
If the dance is over ...

I just saw Ivan's show in Boston last night... He was good as
expected, but I was very disappointed that Leila didn't hang around
longer. Just three songs and then she was gone. Given this is her
first tour in the US you'd think she'd have more of an opportunity to
perform????

Anyway, those three songs were like heaven!
