Does anyone know the lyrics to "E Doce Morrer No Mar" written by Dorival
Caymmi and Jorge Amado? I've been playing the 'Woman on Top' soundtrack
and Dori Caymmi's haunting version keeps running through my head.

Thanks,
Josie B.

In article <16576-39...@storefull-131.iap.bryant.webtv.net>,
É doce morrer no mar
Nas ondas verdes do mar

A noite que ele nâo veio foi
Foi de tristeza pra mim
Saveiro voltou sozinho
Triste noite foi pra mim

É doce morrer no mar
Nas ondas verdes do mar.

Saveiro partiu de noite,foi
Madrugada...nâo voltou,
o marinheiro bonito
Sereia do mar levou

É doce morrer no mar
Nas ondas verdes do mar

Nas ondas verdes do mar, meu bem
Ele se foi afogar
Fez sua cama de noivo,
No colo de Iemanjá

É doce morrer no mar
Nas ondas verdes do mar.

Well, these are the original lyrics. Here comes my tentative english
translation (I am spanish, YES, JUST LIKE PENELOPE!) open to any
improvements the readers may find necessary.

It's sweet to die on the sea
on the green waves of the sea

The night he didn't come back was
was of great sadness to me
Saveiro (Bahia´s typical fishermen boat) came back alone
a sad night it was for me

It's sweet..

Saveiro departed by night
dawn..- it didn't came back
The handsome fisherman
was taken by the mermaidof the sea

It's sweet..

On the green waves of the sea, my love
He was drowned
He made his bridegroom bed
on Iemanja's lap

If you were moved by this beautiful song (which says a lot, all of it
good, about you) you should buy the CD from which it was taken. It
contains a selection of the fishermen songs written by Dorival Caymmi
selected and performed with strange beauty by his son Dori.

The name of the CD is "tome conta do meu filho que eu também ja fói do
mar" by Dori Caymmi. EMI 855577 2. The long title, which is a verse of
one of the songs, means "take care of my son, because I alreadywas a
man of the sea" the prayer of an old fisherman to Iemanjá, to obtain
her protection for his son, also a fisherman.

Dori was more than protected by Iemanjá. He has been blessed with
music , just like his father.

Nacha,

Thank you so much for the song lyrics, translation, and for all the
interesting background information regarding the song. The CD you
mentioned from which the song was taken from sounds very worthwhile.
Also thank you for the nice compliment.

When I would listen to the song on the 'Woman on Top' soundtrack even
though I could only understand some of the words, I could sense that
there was a "deeper" context to the song.

Muito, muito obrigada Nacha or maybe I should say muchîsimas gracias
(since you're Spanish).
