Since this show seems to be the one that replaces Judith King's Brazilian music
show I urge everyone to boycott it. I've sent my protest email to the station
manager and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

Dear Ms. Rivera:

It's totally irrelevant to this group how long Latin Jazz Cruise has been on
WBGO. The point here is that your program is on during the time slot formerly
held by Judith King's Brasil Com S. Since her show isn't on any more, and yours
is there instead, we can safely say that your show has replaced hers. The rest
is semantic nitpicking and of no concern to those who miss Judith's wonderful
hosting of 3 hours of Brazilian music. Maybe you had no part in the decision to
cancel Judith's show, or to schedule your own in that time slot, but you
certainly made a conscious decision to post an advertisement for your Latin
Jazz Cruise here in rec.music.brazilian. You initiated a new thread; your post
wasn't a reply to previous ones about the cancellation of Judith's program; and
you didn't say anything about Brazilian music, even with respect to your show.
Now, although I'm American, I assure you that Brazilian music is NOT Latin
Jazz; it's different; not better or worse, but DIFFERENT. Many people enjoy
both, but this is a newsgroup about Brazilian music, and there must other
newsgroups in which your post would be more appropriate.

Speaking of inappropriate, your post strikes me as particularly unwelcome and
lacking in taste, being addressed to a group of Brazilian music lovers, many of
whom are still lamenting the demise of Judith's wonderful show. You're not a
regular poster here nor do you demonstrate in your post any interest in
Brazilian music. You're simply using the occasion of Judith's show being
canceled to advertise your own show. For you to announce in THIS group that you
and Latin Jazz are the replacement for Judith and Brazilian music is unseemly
and offensive. It's like gloating: you won, we and Judith lost. Your post was
an unpleasant reminder that instead of 3 hours of Brazilian music on Saturdays,
we might be lucky enough to hear 3 or 4 tracks of Brazilian music mixed in with
Latin Jazz; that is, if you intend to play Brazilian music, which you didn't
mention, and if we bother to listen, which many of us won't.

As others have suggested, I've already sent my email protest to WBGO. As an
American who adores Brazilian music, I had been enjoying Judith's Brasil Com S
so much that I was planning to become a member, but now I'm boycotting the
station and encouraging others do so as well. So, Ms. Rivera, I won't be
listening to your Latin Jazz Cruise, waiting for any crumbs of Brazilian music
you might generously decide to play for what's left of your
Brazilian-music-loving audience. I wish you and your listeners good luck, but I
hope you'll have better judgment in future and steer your Latin Jazz Cruise
advertisements to different waters.

Disgustedly,

Swinggz
"It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!"
and WBGO has lost theirs - boycott WBGO!

I understand how you feel about Brasil Com S. I too am very sorry that this
show was canceled. I had the priviledge of filling in for my colleague Judith
for 6 years. You have the right to feel the way you do, but do you honestly
think that you have the right to attack me in this manner? I am an announcer, I
do not make programming or scheduling decisions here at WBGO.

FYI: Eight years ago Brasil Com S came to the airwaves of WBGO, before then we
played brasilian music on the LJC. I stopped doing so because I did not want to
take away from Judith's program.

As to your statement that I have never posted in this group, yes I have posted
in this group, and that was to promote Brasil Com S. I do plan to program
brasilian music on the LJC, 6 to 8 tracks and yes I should of mentioned that on
my original posting. Some NGs and brasilian musicians suggested I post it in
this group, that was not my intention but I did it as reccomended.

I am not gloating and I have won nothing.
You don't know me, you also don't know how heartbreaking it was for me to be
there at the radio station the night that Judith did her last show. The LJC
could never replace Brasil Com S, a program that was very close to my heart,
like you, I too am a Brasilian music lover. This is not usual for radio, they
go on numbers and in our case, fundraisers. It's a shame that this show did not
get the financial support in order to stay alive on the airwaves.

You say that my post was inappropriate, that is one man's or woman's opinion,
yours. But still I have to respect you, not attack you personally or judge you.
It is not my place.

I am truly sorry for your discontentment.

Swinggz,
i for one feel you're wrong in attacking Awilda, she is a lover & supporter of
the music just like the rest of us, and deserves the same kind of respect due
to Judith King.

I write concerning the cancellation of Judith King's radio show 'Brasil
Com S' by station WBGO (FM 88.3MHz in Newark, NJ, USA; on the Internet
via Jazz Central Station at
www1.jazzcentralstation.com/newjcs/main/radio.asp)

I strongly urge all of you here to protest in the form of a letter -- an
actual, physical, snail-mail letter -- to the station.

I suspect that, to the management of WBGO, letters = listeners =
support $$$ that they would like to keep. Sure, we all know that
reinstating Brasil Com 'S' is the right thing to do, but I'll bet that
an appeal to the station management's self-interest, not its better
nature, will prove the more effective strategy.

The text of my letter is reproduced below.

Wishing us all luck in restoring Brasil Com 'S' to the airwaves,

Mark

Attn: Thurston Briscoe, Program Director

Dear Mr. Briscoe:

I'm writing to urge you to immediately reinstate Judith King's 'Brasil
Com 'S'. I wish to register my firm disagreement and profound
disappointment with the unfortunate decision to cancel the show.

This fine program provided an invaluable resource for lovers of Musica
Brasiliera. On a personal note, I can attest that my appreciation for
this music would have come about more slowly, and in a much less
well-informed manner, without the steady stream of delights offered by
'Brasil Com 'S'. To my mind (though surely you would know better) it
was the only regularly-scheduled program of its kind in the New York
area. And, even if not unique, surely it is the best of its kind.
There are so many reasons for this that it's hard to summarize them.
For a start, Judith's wide-ranging knowledge and obvious love of her
material pours out of the radio with every cut. Her bilingual style
respects her sources while making them accessible to a non
Portuguese-speaking audience (for which, as an English speaker only, I
am eternally grateful). Judith's dedication to distilling the best from
the many styles and hundred-year history of Brazilian jazz and popular
music -- in effect, doing in just three hours on Saturday night what the
rest of the 'BGO staff does for American jazz with the rest of the week
at their disposal -- speaks volumes about her taste and skill as a
programmer and host.

I frankly can't understand why you would find this the appropriate
moment to cancel this show. On the contrary, this would seem the best
time to promote it to a wider listenership. Americans' interest in
Brazilian music and culture is increasingly visible in the NY/NJ metro
area. In recent months we've seen articles in the NY Times newspaper
and Sunday magazine, a long article on Caetano Veloso in the current
SPIN, Brazilian nights at Café Wha in the Village, successful tours by
Brazilian artists -- all signs pointing to the popularity and economic
vitality of the music. Add to this a healthy immigrant Brazilian /
Portuguese community right in Newark, and pockets of others throughout
the listening region, and you have a ready-made, eager audience.

The influence of Brazilian artists and styles on the wider world of jazz
is an acknowledged fact, as reflected in their constant presence in your
general weekday jazz programming. WBGO should continue to give this
wellspring of jazz culture the spotlight it deserves, as you do with the
blues, R 'n B / soul / funk musics, and Latin jazz.

Ultimately, 'Brasil Com 'S' is not about education, it's not about
cultural tourism -- it's a radio show, and the best thing I can say
about it is this: it worked. Several times each Saturday night, amid
listening to old favorites and new discoveries, I would catch myself
saying, "What was that she just played?", and also, "I wonder what
she'll play next?". Judith King made me want to hear more, and made me
want to support WBGO for giving her the space to do her thing.

You can't ask much more from a radio program. Please restore this
wonderful show to its rightful place in the WBGO/ 88.3FM line-up.

Very Truly Yours

Mark
