Just for your information, "Manhã de Carnaval" is not the same song as "Samba de
Orfeo."
There's no song called "Orpheus" or "Carnaval."
"Samba de Orfeo" was also composed by Luiz Bonfá for the film 'Orfeu Negro,' and
most recorded versions are purley instrumental (other than the la-la-la chorus
from the film). However, Antônio Maria has his signature on the song, and some
people claim there are lyrics. There was a thread about this sometime last
year. You might want to do a Deja News search for it, in case the lyrics were
posted.

P.S. If you get the 'Orfeu Negro' soundtrack CD, you can hear several versions
of both songs.

"Berimbau" lyrics when in fact I had posted them to this newgroup last December

Carnaval." They are sung by a woman (Elizeth Cardoso?) on track 11 of the 'Orfeu
Negro' soundtrack. On track 8, different lyrics are sung by (I believe) Agostinho
dos Santos.
Perhaps somebody else can transcribe them for you.

These are the other lyrics Daniella was referring to, I think.
A friend from Brasil sent them to me a couple of years ago.
It is impossible to find sheet music with the Portuguese
words here in the US. The English version is horrible!
Why do they do this ? Why does it have to be in English?

Maybe there are several versions of this song. I'll listen to it again
this evening, but this is not what I remember of it. The first two lines
seem correct, but then I remember, something like:

I think Joao Gilberto sings it in this way (but there could be several
versions). Any comments?

Hopefully some of the many volumes promised for publication in summer
'96 might now be available. There are quite a few of these but in
particular a few by Baden Powell and 3 volumes of Luiz Bonfa.
The guy said he was sorry but the still weren't ready yet. But this
time I heard why apparently it is a Brazilian vs UnitedStatesian legal
problems having to do with copyrights, use with permission and all that
crap.
In any case the volume of Paulinho Noguiera has been available for a
couple of months. I ordered it.
In also tells me they are within inches of releasing the Raphel Rabello
CD, which I believe was his final recording. It was intended as with
the Bellinati release of the Garoto pieces to have a volume or two of
transcriptions by Raphael himself. Apparently that won't be the case
but whether they are transcribed by someone else is anyone's guess.

lyrics have never been approached let alone surpassed by the various English
translations, especially A Day in the Life of a Fool. However it's such a
wonderful melody that many singers who only have English want to do the
song. Years ago I had a shot at translating one of the Portuguese lyrics for
Carol Kidd, the Scottish jazz singer now based near London. She used it for
years, but to date no commercial recordings of it have appeared under
Carol's name. A version of it was recorded on a CD by a Scottish singer,
Shelagh Buchanan, but i'm not sure how widely this was distributed.
I'm not sure if my lyric was an improvement on other English versions, but
at least it attempted to tell the story of the original and it got the tune
aired to audiences who might never otherwise have heard it:
The sky is ablaze with the dawn;
It stirs my sad heart to a song:
A song of my love forlorn,
Of passions that ache and burn,
It sings of my empty hope
That you'll return.
But Carnival sounds fill the air,
And hope will soon conquer despair.
