I received the following sad news earlier today.

From organissimo.com:

Just received this news from the Friends of Big Band Jazz list (of which Bob
was a member), passed on by trombonist Mike Suter, a personal friend of
Bob's.

Bob Florence passed away at 1:04 PM PST today, May 15, 2008, after a lengthy
hospital stay. (He had been fighting pneumonia for some time and all his
recent engagements had been cancelled.)

Bob Florence was one of my favorite composers/arrangers and led a big band
which was often nothing short of sensational. Somehow, the title of his
latest CD "Eternal Licks and Grooves" now seems very appropriate.

What sad news! I first contacted Bob about 10 years ago, about a Buddy
Rich LP he had arranged. He helped me then and several other times...
a fine arranger, bandleader and gentleman!

He was also my conduit to Artie Shaw news... he was a neighbor! :)

Bob Florence was also a very welcomed guest here in Germany with his work
with the HR Bigband
from radio HR (Frankfurt). He did also some collaboration with the BBC
bigband.
All his recordings belong in the 4-5 star cathegory. This is the "classic"
sound of a modern bigband.
A great master has gone.

Oh man..that's horrible. He made so many great sessions and was really
the sound of the modern big band for many people.

RIP to a great arranger.
